Do you think Robert Foster can develop to into a #1 receiver?

I get it but if we only add 1 starter with zay... we are stuck with he and deonte as 3 and 4? And that’s assuming the starter we add actually works out (rookies don’t always)

Not adding multiple guys is how you end up where we are today and potentially forcing him into an every down role.

My WR corps going into next year would start with Zay, Foster, and McKittrick.  I don't think they'll be able to sign a great WR in FA unless they throw the bank at Tyrell Williams, whi might want to stay in SD, and probably won't want to trade what it would take to get one, so they'll have to look for their #1 in the draft.

Foster looks to be improving.  Shouldn't be considered a number one at this point.  He should get full playing time now.  He looks like a great stretch the field candidate moving into next season and with Allen's arm, one might conclude that they will become best friends soon.  With a progressing Zay Jones in the slot, we could be looking at two good targets moving forward.  I'd be looking for a tough number 1 and an athletic receiving tight end for Allen.  I'd like to see what Daboll can do next year.  He's shown some things with his play calling in the last two weeks with his use of Mckenzie.

McKenzie looks like the X factor next year with some chemistry growing day by day with Allen.

A quick hit from McDermott's presser today before practice:

Foster’s wake-up call
Rookie Robert Foster made the Bills 53-man roster when the season opened Week 1. By Week 7 however, his uneven performance and lack of production led to his release on Oct. 18th. Although he was signed to the Bills practice squad the next day, the transaction served as clear notice to him that he had to redouble his efforts to carve out an NFL career.

“Yeah it was a wake-up call,” said McDermott when asked about Foster’s demotion. “Sometimes players need a wake-up call. Life in the NFL, as we onboard these young players, life in the NFL… you’re not on scholarship. Some guys need to understand that. There’s an onboarding process that we go through. Some players already have it. Some players it takes more time and unfortunately some players never get it.”

Fortunately, for Foster, he made the most of his time on the practice squad and come Week 10 earned a call-up to the active roster. What he’s done with that opportunity is produce. In the last two games, Foster has put up five receptions for 199 yards and a touchdown.

“We just have to continue to develop these guys. Sometimes it takes time and sometimes some guys get it quicker than others,” said McDermott. “Foster is a good example. An undrafted guy out of Alabama who didn’t play a whole lot there. We continue to work with these men on and off the field and when given the opportunity what are you going to do with it?

“His understanding that this is serious and in a moment’s notice things change,” McDermott said. “This is the NFL and there are a million people outside the gate who want our jobs. I really appreciate the way he has approached it since he has come back.”

I said over the summer I thought Foster would make the team because of his connection to Dabol combined with his immense talent as a former 5-star recruit.

Then I watched him drop ball after ball after ball and completely understood why they cut him.

Now he apparently figured out how to catch a football.

If he's able to continue to actually hold onto footballs that are thrown his way, yes, I think it's possible he becomes a #1 WR, especially given his speed and our QB's affinity for the deep ball.

But I still think we draft a WR in the 1st or 2nd round next year.

ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. (AP) — Bills coach Sean McDermott described the reason the team cut Robert Foster last month as being a wakeup call for the rookie receiver.

Looking back, Foster fully acknowledges it was a message received loud and clear now that he’s back on the roster after two days of being unemployed followed by a two-week stint on the practice squad.

“I needed it. I needed to be cut because at the end of the day, it helped me,” Foster said Wednesday. “It made me work on things that I needed to work on. It made me do a lot more things that I could do to benefit the team.”

Evidence of how motivated he’s become was apparent following the formal end of practice.

Rather than head straight to the locker room to pal around with his teammates as he did in the past, Foster, first, spent extra time catching passes from rookie starter Josh Allen.

He then worked on running routes against a defensive back, before spending yet another 10 minutes catching one ball after another being spit out by a Jugs machine.

It’s not that Foster wasn’t doing enough post-practice work before he was cut. It’s more like he wasn’t doing any.

“That’s the thing, I wasn’t doing some of the things that I’m doing now,” he said. “That’s why I say I try to embrace it all now.”

The payoff is showing up on the field.

Funny that McD says "these guys ain't on scholarship".  Foster was not on scholarship..he was a walk on. And maybe that's why he continues with a 'chip on his shoulder'. Good to see him making plays...and meaningful ones at that. That first down grab vs the Jests may have been even more impressive than his 75 yd TD last week. In my opinion anyway...

He wasn't a walk-on. He was the second ranked WR in the entire country coming out of high school and 23 overall.

My bad. He was initially deemed ineligible before taking high school courses again that allowed him to be given the scholarship. And from what I've seen, he was ranked anywhere between 2-4th ranked coming out of high school.

Good catch Kelly

Yep. He seemed to have all kinds of issues at Bama, some of his own doing and some bad luck and circumstance. I would love to know what Daboll originally told Beane and McDermott about him.

I would agree Daboll must have put in a positive word, but considering they took Proehl at the end of the 7th, this may not have carried a lot of weight with McBeane as they were prepared to risk losing Foster to another team in UDFA..

Good point. Although you could look at it another way. Foster wasn't going to be drafted in all likelihood. He didn't even start in college. They were likely talking to him before and maybe during the draft. That happens a lot. The way to secure both of them is to draft Proehl and sign Foster if you know your connection will secure him.

My early impression of Foster was that he was a useless speedster who couldn't track & catch long balls.

After reading about him buying shoes for a West Seneca teen,  my current impression is that he's a great young man.  I'm rooting for the kid.

What did you think about just after the Jags game and before the shoe-buying incident?

I don't think he'll develop into a #1 receiver, but there's a place for him on the roster do to his speed and he actually can seem to catch the ball (as opposed to Goodwin who also had speed, but dropped about 50%)   His hands are also good enough that he can run different routes, not just "go deep"

No to the question.

Foster is a deep threat.  Change of pace speed guy.  Useful weapon sure ..  but not a #1 go to guy.

He simply lacks the size and physicality to be that role.

Antonio Brown says "What??"

BTW, Foster has good size at 6'2" 196 lbs.
