GM Doug Whaley has been fired

Recommended Posts

There are likely going to be some guys around the scouting department being moved.

That said, I really don't believe Doug is in trouble.

Yeah, it's not like there is not a single competent person there. Keep the best, replace the worst. Happens all the time. Doug has positive qualities, but has some gaps.

Well, this makes the organization look even more like a complete cluster f*ck. I feel bad for Whaley. He has had 3 coaches to deal with in 4 years. Three scheme changes on both sides of the ball. He has still managed to assemble more talent on this team than we have seen in a decade. The coaching staffs failed him, mainly Rex failed him. Now he is getting the axe right after a highly rated draft by all who rate such things? Amazing. Only in Buffalo. You couldn't make this sh*t up if you tried.

Probably had more than 50% to do with it, coupled with poor cap management, bad drafting, lying to players, and failing to get this team closer to its goals relative to winning and playoffs.

You forgot his lousy press conferences. That alone has kept the Bills out of the playoffs.

I can't pretend to know everything behind the scenes, but this whole ordeal has been so mishandled. No idea if Whaley just doesn't get along with anyone or what, but the dude hasn't been that bad.

Agreed! Maybe he's a great backup QB, not the lead guy, but HE HAS VALUE!

Im sure it didnt attract any high level players that were free agents, top quality employees (see rex and his gang), and didnt inspire the players in this team, oh yeah im sure it didnt sit well with the owners either.

Guess I'm completely confused as to why the Bills are being called classless for keeping Whaley through the draft and firing him the day after? From what I've seen prior, that's pretty much standard procedure in the NFL, typically front office contacts expire May 1st for that very reason.

I'm pretty much favored keeping Whaley around, but if he is fired tomorrow, it's pretty much normal operating procedure in the NFL from what I see.

And the great Rex press conferences won us..... sorry, I was dreaming. Nothing. At least Whaley brings more than well, nothing.

Yeah, giving the first QB off the draft board a grand total of 17 starts before declining to pick up his option sure is an infatuation. <_<

He pushed him on two coaching staffs. he's terrible. He was given a scaled back playbook, no competition, and Whaley drafted Watkins for him in 2014, and he failed. He had to be benched for putting WRs in danger.

My best friend’s sister’s boyfriend’s brother’s girlfriend heard from this guy who knows this kid who’s going with a girl who saw Whaley arguing with McDermott at 31 Flavors last night. I guess it’s pretty serious.

Again:

@4TomMartin: McDermott asked if he had inside knowledge to know to trade up ahead of former team, Carolina, to get an OT.

His response: Well said."

Sounds to me like the rumor about the Carolina asst GM is true. Any history on this guy? Does Carolina draft well?

while you know facts thru sources etc. I have a feeling as well this could just be a football guy from Carolina hired by the bills to run the scouting and draft stiff. And Whaley stays.

I agree with you guys.

Well they, made it to the SB, so they do better than us.

It's all over social media tonight that he probably is gone. Wake up.

Your confidence in your opinion is seriously misplaced

I said they werent to happy with Whaleys press conference the owners. They made Mcdermott the voice of the franchise and Whaley hasnt been heard from, they also hire a pr specialist and image consultant. But its my "opinion" and my confidence in it is misplaced.

Simon would you care to refute that based on the owners actions following the press conference that they were happy with Whaleys conference? If so elaborate. If not could you stop attacking me??????

It's bad enough the Bills get it non-stop from local media now we can expect the national media to give it to us too (if this is true). There will be A and B draft grades across the board all while discussing constantly how far the Pegulas are in over their heads. No one has had more turnover in the last 5 years except maybe the Browns. My bet if anything changes though is that Doug quit. If so good for him. That press conference that went so bad, it was clearly because he was sent there and told what not to say by the Pegulas but not what to say. If Pegula wasn't such a kitty cat he would have went himself like any respectable owner would have. Rex didnt report to Whaley he reported to Terry. They sent Whaley and Lynn before Pegula even had the heart to show his face. The more I think about it the more I realize that Doug has nothing to gain and everything to lose by staying here.

I know that your opinion on this matter is wrong.

Whether you believe me or not is immaterial.

Is it possible Whaley stays in any capacity just for pro personnel e v a l? Someone in the building has done a pretty good job on that side.

Maybe McD's boy from Carolina takes over the college scouting/draft side and Whaley takes a "restructuring" of his duties to focus on the pro side?

Maybe he can help Russ fix the Sabres.

Whaley is not a good GM. Bad drafter and cap manager. good in FA, but that is not enough. Can't get along with HC and pushed EJ on two coaching staffs.

Whaley being fired is worst kept secret ever.

Considering McD spent most of draft press conferences having to correct himself when he used "I" with "we"

All the scouts did was provide info for McD so he could make the call. All the channels were praising McD without mentioning Whaley.

Even I could look like a legitimate source right now by reporting that Whaley will be fired.

Every single thing you said is speculation and your personal opinion. He doesn't to the contracts. I have no idea if he can get along with the coaches or not but I do know when the owner hires coaches you don't want (Rex) or they allow the marketing guy to pick the coach (Marrone) it cant be good for the dynamic. Ej barely played and even when he did he wasn't supposed to be out there so if he was pushing him so hard clearly he didn't do a very good job. If he gets fired, he gets fired im not crying for a guy who has a job I would love to have and made more money than I do. All im saying is Whaley being gone is the easy part everything else that comes after that is the hard part.

Done in -why-because he was infatuated with EJ?

infatuated or didn't give up on him in year 1? He did sign TT to pretty much be the starter didn't he? He actually had some decent games as a rookie, didn't make sense to give up on him right away. Ridiculous criticism.

Results of Whaley and EJ speak for themselves.
