How often do you drink?

So last year our daughter went off to college. My wife and I have been having a good time with it. We usually drink wed-sun. Consisting of a couple of glasses of wine and 8-10 hard drinks. We have no health issues and both exercise regularly and dont smoke. Is this a bit much, just thoughts.

Is that daily intake from Wed-Sunday or overall between Wed-Sunday?

That's my question. If that's the daily amount that's a LOT.

My routine was Thurs (sometimes) Fri and Sat (every week) Sun (sometimes). And it would be 6-8 drinks per day usually wine or beer. That became too much so I've been dry for about a year (ok ok so I fell off the wagon that day in Sept and lost the car keys...geez).

too much, but i take breaks every once in a while to make sure i am able to take breaks. i probably go to my local watering hole an average of 3+ times a week. problem i have been having is my local establishment is practically next door to the planet fitness i go to, so if i go to the gym after work, i stop in for a couple barley pops. I am guessing if i stopped going to the gym, my consumption would plummet :-)

As you know my PF is in Oakland. It smelled of skunk in there one day.

Anyone who knows me knows I used to drink heavily, and usually liquor.

Some time ago, I stopped drinking altogether. Took a few years off it, as I worked through some stuff. Recently, I've allowed myself a beer a day.

Though, given some events going on in personal life, could see that radically increasing. <_<

Don't really want to, but the thought of overall sobriety's lost a lot of its luster

A couple of years ago I picked up a bottle of Havana Rum at a Duty Free Store in Frankfurt. Great stuff! Aged and very smooth. Burned thru that, and 2-3 years later found it in Amsterdam, so got 2 bottles. A funny thing happened since then, I retired. I still have a bottle and a half left, still love it, but don't come home thinking "I need a drink" anymore.

I make it a point to tell myself to not say "I need a drink", kind of a psychological thing. I don't want to allow myself to become that 'stressed out'. I drink because i love great beer. Rarely, if ever, will I come home and have a drink while watching tv or a drink with dinner. I am usually venturing out to explore a local brewery or a beer that was just put on tap. I like to play games with my own head to try and convince myself i don't have a drinking problem. :-)

I probably average 1-2 drinks per day, but I don't drink every day. Some weekend nights I will get absolutely toasted...8-10 drinks. During the work week drinking a couple helps me unwind from the day and fall asleep. I always feel uncomfortable when the doctor asks me how much alcohol I drink, and I usually lie. But I don't think I drink that much...right?

To those of you that can have a couple and be done I have only one thing to say to you. !@#$ you!! :censored:

A couple does not exist in my world. When I was back in WNY last month I was at the local bar when they opened at 11am had one beer and it was ON!!

I asked my doctor a few years ago. They showed me a chart.

The chart showed my life expectancy at 0 drinks per day. At 2 drinks per day my life expectancy went up. At 3 drinks per day my life expectancy was the same as at 0 drinks per day. At 4 drinks or over per day life expectancy went downhill fast.

So I have settled on 2 - 3 per day. Must be standard drinks. Free pouring mixed drinks gets me in trouble fast and defeats the purpose of the chart.

Same here. They're like Pringles. Once you pop, you can't stop.

I rarely touch the hard stuff anymore, but I drink a **** load of beer. Daily.

I routinely have a glass of wine or a craft beer almost every night. .

If I am with the right company/special occasion and do not have to drive, I can drink all night, but this is something I do not do very often.

For those old timers who remember "babyrock", she will be having her second child in about two weeks.

This will make NINE grandchildren. Life is good.

I need to get some good cigars and some scotch!

If alcohol interferes in any way with your life, then by definition it is too much. I have ceased any alcohol consumption for quite some time now and my life is infinitely better. Alcohol did not enhance or improve my life. It only had negative effects. The problem with alcohol is that it distorts your perception of reality and you only think it doesn't negatively affect your life. My advice would be to never consume alcohol anytime, anywhere, ever.

This is an interesting topic for me because I don't drink. But when my parents and sister come to town, they are constantly drinking and I don't know what's normal. My dad will have at least 6 total drinks (wine and beer) in a day. I thought that was either too much or that my family is so bored around me that they have nothing better to do.

So true... Interesting topic!

Don't feel alone JR, I don't really drink either. Not saying I never drink. I probably had two or three beers the last year or so.

Pretty shocking aye? I know! ;-)

I hear what you are saying.

I can get into this topic deeply, but don't want to be a bigger killjoy than I normally am... And this is just the topic to do it! ;-)

So basically to answer the OP's question: I almost never drink. We went into Greektown, Chicago last night for dinner and I didn't touch a drop. Now wife, she had two glasses of wine (Xinomavro-Negoska I think??). I am by far NOT a teetotaler, I just don't really drink. Now wifeypoo? Ease her pain of dealing with me. But, what is two glasses gonna do on top of a big Greek dinner. ;-) She had the moussaka, myself kontosouvli.

I don't drink. Never have. I'm 52 and I'm an anomaly. Just about everyone else that I've met that doesn't drink is either a religious fanatic or a recovering alcoholic.

Good for you! Great and awesome to hear. So true what you said. I think my daughter will be like that... Never touch a drop, she by far from "religious" too.

Even know you never drink, were you directly affected by alcoholism in your life? You don't have to answer, sorry for being forward, just curious. Just saying this because alcoholism may have not affected me personally, but alcoholism affected others in my life. It just became not my thing... But doesnt mean I won't drink a few here and there.

It's quite interesting that being a non-drinker is considered both a negative and a positive. "Good for you! Now get out of my house so i don't feel ashamed about how much I drink."

My family tree is chock full of dead alcoholics so my parents banned the stuff growing up. The only times I ever got exposed to it, it was the cheap stuff that made you gag. So that reflex got burned into my psyche. Add the fact that I was too broke to afford the good liquor till my 30's... so I never got the taste for it.

I blame my parents. It's like being the only kid that wasn't taught how to ride a bike.

Same here. I don't think being non-drinker should be negative. Only positive.

My father is an alcoholic and still kicking into his 80s. But he gave it up when my mother came down with ovarian cancer. She passed away @ 58. He hasn't touched a drop since. My mother wasn't a drinker. Only thing I can say is that he probably seen what his drinking was doing to her. Yeah, it can't make her get cancer, especially something very genetic like ovarian cancer... But it sure squared his azz away.

You didn't "fall" off the wagon...you took a platform dive with three flips in pike position off the wagon. 😆

I am Intrigued ..... Asian whiskey???

They've taken over whiskey the way they took over electronics in the 1980s.

The Japanese have a single barrel called Hibiki-17 that is delightful.

The best, IMO, is a Taiwanese 11-year called Kavalan (the blue bottle).

Even the "lesser" ones like Taketsuru are great too.

No schitt?? Thank you for sharing, bandit. I had no idea. When I read your earlier post I assumed you were referring to some kind of rice or plum brew (is that racist?).

As a huge fan of brown liquor, I'll have to give this a shot. Where does one find these?

Not sure why I chose not to drink. There was no alcoholism in my immediate family, I just knew that it was something that wasn't for me. Hardest part was being a teenager with the peer pressure to drink, but I was always strong in my own convictions.

My ex was an alcoholic and even with my help she couldn't get to the point where she stopped drinking. Like many people with a drinking problem she would look at a list of signs that you might have a problem and pick out the ones that didn't apply to her as justification for her continued use.

I have no problems with anyone drinking so long as they know when to say when. Sadly, some never do.
