Conlan58
From what I've seen, he takes on criticism better than he takes on a single blocker... But I don't know his role in this defense and the coaches say he is doing good so...
TheFunPolice
I'll be honest... I have no idea if he's been good or not I don't really pay attention to him during the game. But the greatest defense of all time (anyone who says otherwise is just a hater, I read it here) just gave up 30 pts and tons of yards on the ground to Baltimore so I'm not going to freak out about a problem the defense had for about 5 quarters

But I think the issues that fans like me have with him is he doesn't do anything extra beyond just standing there and taking on the double. Just once I wanna see him maybe get a sack? Just once I wanna see him maybe roll off a block and get a tackle? People who get paid handsomely an above avg contract need to sometimes perform above avg. I want to see that too. Once he is engaged with a blocker he treats that as job done. He doesn't fight to get off those blocks and make a difference.
Aussie Joe
That’s high praise from McD... The true test though in regards to what they really think of him is if he remains on the team in 2020 and beyond getting paid.. Like Shady this year, I’ll believe it when it happens.. . I didn't pay it much mind but I have to admit they may have been right. So maybe we shouldn't be surprised he is the way he is. He's clearly one-dimensional and just not worth the money. I'm not saying others aren't contributing to this poor run defense. It's just that he's supposed to be the big space-eater and occupy multiple blockers, keep our linebackers clean, and a push the pocket guy. And that just ain't the case. ...all valid points IMO.....perhaps McBeane leaned a bit too heavily on the Carolina Connection for reasons unbeknown to us...... If there is an issue it is with McBeanes. and to that point.. Bills needed a 1 tech in the middle to run that defense on early downs. Did they choose the wrong guy to pay? Probably. and more certainly looking at it with today's view points Bills could do better. Seems they are making some changes to resolve the issue. I do watch the lines as best as i am able and Star does get turned, and needs to add some hustle to his game. Continuous improvement means that Bills need to improve what Star is giving them against the run , and perhaps pass. One of the things to note is that Morse ( being a smaller cerebral guy) get blown off the ball sometimes. That is what Bills need from the Tackles even in run defense. some sincere push gap control is swell when it works. but fo LBs to sort out

Star deserves some heat, but the more I watch the more it looks like Edmunds is a real problem with the Bills run D. Milano has made a lot of mistakes recently as well. BuffaloBillsGospel
Star's pay scale is not the problem, the problem is he gets pushed backwards more times then not (And yes I know you can't maintain the block every time), he is supposed to be the guy to maintain or take up a guy to free the LB's to get to the ball carrier or QB . If he's getting manhandled to the point that he's not freeing up that LB, that's when you start to take notice. And to say the DL is fine? They signed Star Louteleilei in FA, drafted a DT 9th overall, added Jordan Phillips off waivers and now signed FA Corey Liuget, that doesn't seem fine imo. If he was doing his job what would be the reason they sign Liguet when they brought up Vincent from the practice squad? All signs point to Star not maintaining his block long enough or not at all and Oliver can't get to the QB. That's not a whipping boy it's a legit concern but again these are my own opinions.
stuvian
i can tell that the message board hasn't gotten over the Philly loss yet. I think defensive playcalling has much to do with how we lost that game. NFL defenses have become homogenized in their playcalling since the liberalization of the pass rules. Basically, defenses will let you do what you want between the 20s as long as they don't surrender the big pass play. On the big run in question we were clearly in pass D and I believe Philly audibled a run call catching us flat footed. Other than this play I don't see a lot of reason to pile on Star. Our defenses are bend but don't break between the 20s.

If that were true, that he gets pushed back more often than not, than he would indeed be a major problem. Thing is, that's not what's happening. What's happening is that the Bills have made it very very clear that while he's not perfect, he's successfully doing what they want him to do. He's not doing what some fans want, but he is satisfying the Bills. Which is the important thing. Liuget is apparently replacing Peko, so Star has nothing to do with that signing. Jordan Phillips and Oliver are 3-techs. They play a different position than Lotulelei. If bringing in four guys to fill two positions that your head coach has a history of platooning heavily doesn't make sense to you, you need to understand that the coach isn't handling things the way you would like. But considering he has an extremely impressive history of running successful defenses and is currently running a defense that's third in both yards and points, maybe things are going just the way they should be ... on defense at least. Especially when the defense is only counting $75 mill against the cap this year. That's cheap. Again, the problem really isn't the defense. They're playing very well. The problem is the offense.
