YoloinOhio Posted November 5, 2019 Share Posted November 5, 2019 Those honors go to left guard Quinton Spain, who’s turned his season around and was integral to the running game doing as well as it did against Washington. Coach Sean McDermott didn’t shy away from calling Spain out early in the season, and he has responded. On Sunday, Spain showed off his power and movement skills against Washington’s talented defensive line. Running back Devin Singletary found plenty of success running behind Spain. The left guard also stood his ground in one-on-one pass-blocking situations and showed the awareness to complete combination blocks. He was one of the top performers against Washington, finishing second only to White. In comparison to the rest of the Bills’ offensive linemen over the past three weeks, Spain has taken off. on the run D Washington hit them with plenty of inside zone runs in the second quarter and the Bills were unable to adjust on two separate drives. Running back Adrian Peterson rushed the ball seven times for 93 yards, with 91 of those coming on the first five attempts. For the rest of the game (the first, third and fourth quarters), the Bills allowed only 17 yards to Peterson on 13 attempts. So, how did the Bills lose focus over that five-play stretch? It was not due to a single person, but rather a compilation of errors. Tremaine Edmunds, Matt Milano, Star Lotulelei, Ed Oliver, Jordan Phillips and Taron Johnson took turns being the culprit over that five-play stretch. The most crushing of the five plays, the 28-yard run, should have been stopped in the backfield. Johnson dove in from the edge without securing the tackle, which allowed Peterson to squirm into open field. Oliver, Phillips and Lotulelei each had a play in which Washington knocked them off their spot and influenced a big gain. On one of those plays, Lotulelei could have done a better job, but he has been an overall net-positive player for the Bills over the last two games and hasn’t deserved the criticism he’s received. 2 Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

In my casual (non studied) observation, it appears Morse is good at getting to the second level and pulling, but not good on bull rushes and at the point of attack. Over 29 years of fanhood Posted November 6, 2019 Share Posted November 6, 2019 (edited) On the run defense- I watch the all 22 tonight and also noticed all but 1 of APs huge runs came against the nickel. Run D looked great when lorax was in. Not sure why Neal hasn’t been getting snaps at nickel backer... much better at playing the run in the box than poyer or Johnson. Poyer and Johnson both graded highly on this review. IIRC we do have quite a few FAs and will lose some depth as a result of our roster actually having players that others want. It will be interesting to see how we work FA and the draft this year. Neither are 'move' guards. Morse is and has always been a pass blocking stud. He is not a mauler, never was. Josh Allen gets into the most trouble when he has 4+ seconds before attempting a pass. I don't know how Siran Neal lost out to Taron after the job he did stepping in those few weeks in Oct. Not sure why he was phased totally out, he has been the most electric to the QB from the edge. I thought S. Lawson played fairly well. The OL is better than last year. It should improve going forward. As for draft need I am in the 1 tech camp but hopefully, near the end of the first round, we can just find a real dynamic player who will help win games (e.g. T. The teams two biggest needs outside of resigning some of their own talent to extensions or outright are WR1 and a prime time pass rushing DE. Unless Amari Cooper hits the market I don't see a true WR1 hitting free agency. But there do appear to be some quality edge rushers that might be on the market and the Bills will have the space to responsibly add a big time pass rusher while not jeopardizing their ability to resign and extend their own talent both in 2020 and beyond. Luckily the 2020 NFL draft does appear to be a good one for WR's according to those who track draft classes. So I think they can find good help at WR1 via the draft. I think both our guards are serviceable and probably a bit better maulers than pass blockers. I felt that Feliciano struggled in our game against the Eagles, but was being asked to pass protect more that game against a great defensive front. Where I think we have had more consistency issues is at RT. Nsekhe has been struggling through nagging injuries and Ford is better suited for guard at this stage of his development than asking him to pass protect on the edge. We have struggled a bit all year picking up the delayed or corner blitz from Dawkins side, but that is more scheme and coaching recognition. Morse may not be a mauler, but he can pull with the best of them. Bobby Johnson has done a pretty good job with this group and they are much better than last year.
