If you open the bengals page for 2019 and scroll down you will see every player is listed 3 times after the first dozen or so. It happens on their site sometimes. Sure, people say you can get a good player anywhere, but the higher you pick, the more options you have, including trade down scenarios. If the Colts had won another meaningless game or two at the end of the year, they lose out on Nelson and 3 seconds. I don’t advocate tanking, but it helps take the sting out of a loss late in the year. Still, I’m encouraged that they looked good and can go into the offseason on a high note. They are not on the verge of competing for anything meaningful. He is on the last year of his contract. He gets injured a little more often then what you would like to see. Because essentially what that is showing you is a team's proposed cap hits for 2019. A team doesn't have to be below the cap for 2019 until the official start of the league year in March. Think of it this way for simplicity. I could with a totally empty roster tomorrow, sign 53 players, pay them all $3m for 2018 to make sure I am under the cap for this year but commit to pay them all $15m for 2019. That puts me over the 2019 cap limit but until the league year starts in March that isn't a problem because only then does the 2019 cap take effect. So it is possible where a team has backloaded a lot of contracts for them to be already over the cap for a future year before that year begins. You never want to be of course because it means that you are in the business of having to cut guys before you can even sign your own draft class let alone go after an FAs. There were a few years in the early part of this decade where the Saints were routinely over the cap for the next year. Chuck Wagon Posted January 3, 2019 Share Posted January 3, 2019 Indy is going to be a problem for a long time, assuming Luck's injury concerns are behind him. They can actually protect him now with a good young line, they have a very young D shaping up nicely and can sign about anyone they want. Cap space is incredibly overrated as a tool to improve a team IMO. People have been pointing at that as a potential saving grace, but there are several more desirable locations / teams with as much or more cap space as us and the elite teams that want to add talent always find a way to make the contracts work. Foxx Posted January 3, 2019 Share Posted January 3, 2019 (edited) looking at the numbers again, i would say that we are in better position than the Jets at #2. sure they have $20mm more to spend than we do but they also have only 35 players signed at this point whereas we have 48 signed. Indy has 41 players signed and a whopping $37mm more to spend than we do so, they are far and away in a better position than we are. The Browns are another one to watch. They played some good football this year, and tight against some pretty good teams. Lots of room.
