BringBackOrton
is that like when he forced EJ on everyone by asking what they thought of him? if a smart offensive mind comes in and wants tyrod i dont believe whaley would throw him out of the interview process. Whaley fights tooth and nail for EJ. He makes decisions like he's his child.

KellyToTasker
all it means is that they arent going to force him on the next coach. if a guy comes in and loves TT, they can still keep him. CSBill
@adamschefter Buffalo benching Tyrod Taylor is sign of uncertainty with him. Can't risk injury when he is due a $15.5M bonus and $30.75M gtd if hurt. Yuuup, that's all. Don't read to much into this decision.
dave mcbride
Thank you. Why can't people understand this? Because it signals that Whaley is quite possibly more interested in keeping a crappy qb who he has hitched his wagon to rather than an objectively decent player next season. I don't foresee Taylor being on the team now. Whaley is picking the coach, after all. Yuuup, that's all. Don't read to much into this decision. There is a ton to read into this. You guys are whistling past the graveyard.
bigK14094
If the injury clause is the reason....to start another QB...OK, then Cardale. EJ is never anything but a backup.....an audition...for what? Whaley is a problem....has to go also. If TT is let go , he will land elsewhere and get into the playoffs with another team....don't cry for TT...cry for Bills fans. I am dumping my season tickets if I see EJ Sunday. I could support giving Cardale a game (sunday) to help him for the future. But, EJ, stupid stupid stupid. I have no ill will for EJ, I just want him gone gone gone! NoSaint
Whaley fights tooth and nail for EJ. He makes decisions like he's his child. the same GM that traded back and risked losing him, brought in orton to replace him, brought in tyrod and cassell and made it a completely open competition, etc.... you are latching on to news narratives that just arent backed up by his actions. hell, if you love the news narratives, whaley allegedly wanted cardale last time we opened this can of worms. finding out if EJ belongs as a backup (or possibly part of a competition) next year is not a bad thing. also, this move would be happening regardless of who the backup is. PolishDave
Clearly, they do not think Cardale is ready. He is not the answer now. I think you are right. If Cardale was ready for a start, they would give this to him. They already know what they have with EJ. They aren't playing him to see anything. They just want to avoid the injury clause with Tyrod which suggests maybe they are thinking of cutting ties with Tyrod.
TheWei44
Thank you. Why can't people understand this? Here's what I think's going on with both players: Tyrod: Why play him in meaningless game with the huge risk of injury (and possible large payment)? It's a sound move regardless of how strongly they feel about his play or how they might address his option EJ: If anything, this is a tryout for the backup QB role, not starter - From that perspective, it makes perfect sense - One last look to decide whether we should retain him for no. 2 or

Paup 1995MVP
The fact that Taylor looks like he isn't long for this team tells you everything you need to know about this organization and Whaley. Manuel is terrible and Taylor is average at worst. He's better than any guy the Bills will have a chance at getting next season. Good luck to Tyrod. I look forward to seeing him perform capably elsewhere. Give me a break McBride. Tyrod is OK on a good day. He is not leading us to the promised land. He still looks confused on most plays that he drops back in the pocket. He threw for 329 yards against the Fish, and still missed a lot of throws. He is not consistent enuf to beat the good teams. Look at his body of work over the past two years. Some good. A lot of mediocre to poor. We can do better.

Buffalo Boy
EJ is starting vs Jets as per Adam Schefter. Don't get too excited. It's not because the team thinks he's better than Tyrod. They just don't want to risk Tyrod getting injured and his contract extension kicking in. Would like to see Cardale too so hopefully he dresses as #2. I would be shocked if Jones didn't see some time.

Next years is the option year on his rookie contract, and like Gilmore he was a first rounder. It's why Gilmore was paid so much this season. YoloinOhio
They can't play Tyrod. They don't want to play Cardale yet. xsoldier54
Un-effing-believable. Tyrod Taylor, whatever his flaws, has had an objectively solid season and has played well lately. Manuel's contract is up and he is not as good as Taylor. Some here are no doubt looking forward to celebrating drafting 13th instead of 17th -- as if that will change things. It's a smart move business wise. The game means nothing and if Taylor gets injured, a la Mariotta and Carr last week, then Buffalo is on the hook for the remainder of his contract. Makes no sense to play him until they decide if he will be brought back on a new contract.
Dorkington
What this does: - Protects the Bills options regarding Tyrod - Lets the Bills/Lynn/Whaley have one last look at EJ (will help decide his future here as well) - Let EJ have an opportunity to 'try out' one last time before hitting the FA market - Protects Cardale from being thrown into the fire when he isn't ready, and will possibly be learning a new offense next year anyways All in all, a safe move. I don't see how anyone can be upset about this.

He is a FA unless the Bills pick up his option years, which is a fortune. No one is trading a first for anyone who lights it up against a team as bad as the Jets are right now. The risk of losing EJ was overblown and once he was drafted, it became Whaley dead set on proving himself right. He traded two firsts to prove EJ was the guy and so we couldn't take a QB high in 2015. He only brought in Orton after Marrone freaked out, Whaley was perfectly content to play out 2014 with EJ, which is why he was the only real QB on the roster all summer. He traded for Cassel, but just like Kolb, that was competition that you could say "they are a little better but EJ has more potential!" And still play him. He signed TT to placate Rex and had serious doubts he could challenge EeeeeJ. Only after TT made a pro bowl, Whaley extended him but that's only because the only thing more important to Doug than EJ is his own job security. If Whaley wanted Cardale, he'd be out there. He got Rex fired to play EJ for a reason.

dpberr
This game is going to be like the Pro Bowl. There will be little effort by either defense and both teams will run up and down the field.
