Idle Speculation on who will be the Bills Pick at #59

On scenario 1, it's clear they see Kincaid as a different position from Knox -  a move TE v. an inline TE.  They will complement each other. So not a hurt feelings issue or redundancy like drafting a RT might be.

The gaping hole at ILB is too much to ignore if Sanders or Simpson drop. I can't believe Jack Campbell went top 20

1. MLB: what do they plan here?  Young players on the roster, 3rd round pick LY.  But unproven.  To me, this is highest need, but they could get creative with rotating players.

2. RT: what do they truly think of Spencer? Tonight will tell us alot about that confidence.  I'm cautiously optimistic on him.

3. DT: were running it back with the same crew, so it appears. But, I think a talented 1-tech could be a key missing piece.  Take more pressure off drafting a MLB as well. Daquan is our only true 1, and nobody under contract after this season.

4. DE: same as above, running it back.  I'm not a fan of Aje or Boogie, we could use another "speed/bend" rusher...and with Von coming off an ACL, this ranks high on my list of potential immediate impact

5. WR: drafting Kincaid doesn't stop us from adding more here.  But we have a solid group, could look for a true slot...ie: Downs or Jayden Reed.  But there's only 1 ball to distribute, and Shakir could turn into our future slot.

6. IOL: another area we have alot of "depth", and spent on Connor this FA.  I'm not as big a fan of Bates, but I have a different philosophy with my guards (rather see mauler types and tackles that are finesse).  I'd love to see us take an IOL tonight.

All this said, if I'm Beane, tonight is spent on trenches.  Specifically, an IOL (that could also compete at RT) and a 1-tech DT.

Are they willing to bet the health of the franchise player on him performing?  There has to be a contingency plan in place.  Otherwise, then what?  We just have to deal with a huge liability there for the season?

They can hope all they want, but it will become apparent pretty quickly once the season starts if this healing time and training camp we were told was all he needed is actually the case.

They have for two years already. Why not a 3rd? Especially seeing this may be the first real offseason he has had since he was drafted. 🤔

I think the gaping hole is at OT, specifically Brown.  I'm not willing to bet the entire season and possibly Josh Allen's health on the hope that Spencer Brown figures out how to play.  If we don't draft an OT or at least someone that can play OT, what are our real options if it becomes apparent a game or two into the season that Brown just isn't getting the job done?

So if he's the week 1 starter and by week 2, it's obvious he's not getting it done, then what?

Just took a look at Joe Marino (locked on Bills) horizontal draft board and here is who he has through the 2nd round.  This is a Bills specific board but I left the TEs off because they already grabbed Kincaid.

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/u/0/d/1Y3yiGJxznx-SkzJLxqkS1ygb8zLvfym6ZJr1lOloVrU/htmlview#gid=0

Top Half round 1 - all gone

Back Half Round 1 - Had Kincaid here btw

Still left:

Mathew Bergeron OT

Bryan Bresee IDL

Keeanu Benton IDL

Ade Adebawore IDL

2nd Round -

Zach Charbonett RB

Tyler Scott WR

Marvin Mims WR

Jalin Hyatt WR

Josh Downs WR

Dawand Jones OT

Steve Avila IOL

Toe TIppman IOL

Cody Mauch IOL

O'Cyrus TOrrence IOL

Keion White Edge

BJ Ojulari Edge

Isiah Foskey Edge

Gervon Dexter IDL

Drew Sanders LB

Brian Branch S

20 names several should still be there when the Bills are on the clock.

I think we are done in the next few rounds on WR/TE, too many other pressing needs as you allude to.  One you missed is interior line, especially Center. Morse is a major injury/retirement risk.

And what if he is getting it done? I prefer to be positive. 😉

In case of emergency. Q, Doyle, Vandermark, Bates, Ike.

Personally,  I am still hoping for a Dalton Risner signing (😁),  but believe they will still sign someone in this draft cycle. Who and when still remains the question.

You hope for the best, but plan for the worst.  While I hope a real offseason and training camp is all he needs, I'm not going to gamble the season on that being the case.  Our schedule is brutal this year and unless we get better O-line play than we did last year, it's going to be a long season.

True. I'm not against it in any way. Who do you think will be available at OT we will be able to draft, say at 59, that as a rookie will be better than Brown as a 2/3 year starter?

Bryan Bresee is gone already.  That said, this is a Bills specific board.  There are other really good players still out there that haven't been drafted yet.

The Bills are going to have a chance at a great player tonight in the 2nd.  I'd be thrilled with Benton, Bergeron, Sanders, among others.  Like I said, there are more really good players still on the board that aren't listed here that I would be happy to have as well, although many of them will be gone by the time we pick.  But I'm excited to see what's there.  Wish we had more ammo to move up if we wanted to, but we should still have some solid choices at 59.  Ideally, 5-6 of these guys will be there and we can move down a bit to maybe add a 5th to try and make up for that 4th we spent yesterday and still get a guy, but I would have no problem sticking and picking because there will be some solid players available.

What's the list? If you don't mind sharing of course.

Most of not all will be gone when we pick unfortunately so we either get lucky, move up, or reach from outside of this list.

I did not include any pass rushers, QBs, RBs, WRs (we have Kincaid....).  Focussing on OL, LB, DT, Safety depth, PLUS any round 1 slips.

No particular order:

1. S Brian Branch

2. CB Joey Porter

3. OG O'Cyrus Torrence

4. RT Dawand Jones

5. OC John Michael Schmitz

6. CB Cam Smith

7. OG Steve Avila

8. LB Drew Sanders (not an every down linebacker IMO, but great pass rusher)

9.  OC Luke Wypler

10. DT Keeanu Benton

11. LB Daiyan Henley (better as a SAM linebacker)

12. MLB Trenton Simpson

13. S Sydney Brown

14. DT Kobie Turner

Some of these are a bit of a reach for round 2 I realize

It all depends on what Brown looks like. Maybe I'm wrong and the dude looks like a pro-bowler this year.  I don't think that's going to be the case, but it's possible.  Realistically, I just hope he's serviceable.  Not lights-out, but not terrible like he was last season either. But if he looks more like last year's version, they need to be prepared.

I don't know what kind of grade the Bills have for Bergeron, but from what I've seen of him, I'd be willing to trade up in the second.  I think a rookie Bergeron would be better than last season's Brown, with the plus side that he gets better each year.

This offseason, we knew what had to be done...Get Josh weapons and get Josh protection.  I'm not convinced we've done enough yet on the OL.

Tippman - C at #59

We already have Bates and Edwards who can move to C. If they go IL it means they think SB is locked as starter at RT. But I think they go RT in 2nd or 3rd after a trade back. That and LB at 2/3 likely with a trade back. Another S to go with Rapp ( a starter in the SB for Rams). DT depth after that. No WR.

NFL.com has a day 2 mock up and they have us taking ...

2. Isaiah Foskey - DE - Notre Dame

3. DeMarvion Overshown - LB - Texas

Simpson went in the early 3rd

Avila and Rashee Rice went after the Bills pick in the 3rd and both went to Arizona.

Just a mock and someones opinion, but it shows there should be good players available for the Bills tonight.

Yeah felt like to me the Bills would have taken Simpson and then Avila.......of the players still available but selected later........in the event the rest of it fell that way.

I see Beane tryna' recoup a 4th and moving back into the 3rd.......which would have still put them in position to add Simpson(or Mingo, amongst others) in that circumstance.

I feel Trenton Simpson will be a Bill tonight. I just feel he is the LB the Bills ront office wanted all along.

I’m not sure he and Sanders last until 59. Then I think Bills pivot to Henley or Williams Mapu later.  So 59 will be OL(RT I hope) or DT, S. If Simpson and sanders are gone. BB trades back with LV for 70 and 109 and get lb later. He was visibly ill as  another poster pointed out giving up 130. But it’s highly possible I’m full of bs 😂

I see people saying we should move back in the 2nd or 3rd to recoup the 4th, but isn't that just giving up an earlier pick for two later ones ? ... I'd rather have the earlier picks.

I expect to update this later before the second round of the draft starts. But with where we stand right now, I feel very in the dark about where the Bills go next. I will commit before the second round starts though.   A side note - this is the first draft in a while that Joe Shoen did not at least help Beane prepare for.  Some of the past "drafting traits" may have moved to NY.   Offense and being an older player were both outside the Beane era mold.

I am not sure how to interpret the first round selection.  I felt strongly the Bills would go offense in the first round.  To me, Kincaid was not just the player that will help the Bills the most on offense in 2023, but was also the BPA at the selection.  But a string of very good defensive players went in the rest of the round after the Bills took Kincaid which  indicates a committment to offense.

Scenario 1 - Bills are committed to this draft being about optimizing the offense.  The next logical step in this scenario is improving the oline. One thing I took away from the first round selection is that while Dawson Knox is a very good and highly compensated player, the Bills did not worry about hurting his feelings with the pick.  I don't think they care anymore about Spencer Brown's, Mitch Morse's or Ryan Bates feelings.

Based on this line of thinking there seems to be a 1A and a 1B plan.  IA is standing pat, and hoping Matthew Beregon, Joe Tipmann, or John Michael Schmitz falls to that position. I think there is a real possibility one of them could be there.  It seems unlikely the top IOL players 0'Cyrus Torrence and Steve Avila will be there at that pick.  This brings us to the 1B plan.  Maybe the Bills are happy to get 2 quality picks in the draft, and are willing to use further draft capital, or future draft capital to move up for Torrence or Avila.  The Bills are a pretty complete team now, and I am not sure we need to be stocking the practice roster.  So I think this is a viable option. Our second and third rounder, probably allows you to get one of Torrence and Avila.

Scenario 2 - The Bills took Kincaid because he was BPA, and that is the modus operandi for the draft.  I don't think they expected Kincaid to fall (although a number of internet simulation programs in the last week leading up to the draft did have Kincaid falling).  I think other players fans are high on will also fall unexpectedly to 59.  In that case I would expect the Bills to be neutral on offense vs defense and pick the BPA.  I think this group will include some of the players in this big group: WRs - Jalin Hyatt, Jonathan Mingo.  CB's Julius Brent, DJ Turner and Tryique Stevenson Other Defense, Trenton Simpson, Antonio Johnson, Tuli Tuipulotu, Derrick Hall, and Olinemen Joe Tippman, Matthew Bergeron, and Cody Mauch.      At this point it is tough to separate what I would want, from what I think the Bills would do.  But if all of those players are available, and the Bills are neutral on BPA, I think it would be one of the cornerbacks.  The 2B plan is to trade up to take Joey Porter who seems to be the true BPA going into the second round.  If he gets past Pittsburg, a 2&3 would might allow us to get Porter.  This would be a home run.

Scenario 3 - A shift to defensive need - I think there is a fan consensus the Bills current hole on defense at LB and future hole on the Dline with the expected departure of Ed Oliver next year.  In this case, I would expect the Bills to stand pat and take Drew Sanders or Trent Simpson, in that order, if they fall to 59. Otherwise it would likely be whoever they think is the best defensive interior lineman fit for the Bills. Keeanu Benton sticks out as the best of the the interior limeman who has a good chance of being available at that pick.

Overall, I think the Bills will be best served for 2023 and beyond by scenario 1.

One way to be sure to get ones guess right is to list every possible scenario :nana:

Obvious answer is that it will come down to how the round falls.  We have shown interest in no particular order at DL, LB, OL, DB, RB, and WR and any of those outside of RB would be in play for us at 59 if there is a guy there they feel fits the value.

One thing we know for sure that Beane won't be afraid to move up to get a guy he feels is sticking out, especially with our overall strength of the roster.  There are definitely some guys I could see meeting that criteria for him to move up to get, although they would need to get close enough to our pick where the cost wasn't crazy because I doubt Beane would be willing to give up an early pick next year like our 1st or 2nd.

And now having given up a 4th for Kincaid, trading back is certainly in play if Beane isn't seeing the value.  Like @GunnerBillpointed out, with so few first round grades this year, the back end of the draft saw a heavier dose of 2nd round graded players go and could leave Beane in a spot where he trades back and tries to get an extra pick.

Im torn on what I a rooting for...On defense, I am hoping we end up with one of the LB's of Sanders or Simpson.  DL would be nice too, just LB feels more pressing and hoping one of them gets to us.  On offense there are still some very good options on the OL to get Josh some more protection, although I am skeptical the guys sticking out the most will get close to our pick.  Still some WR's too, but after adding Kincaid I feel like its less a priority in the 2nd and I think a WR run is gonna happen ahead of us.  But if we somehow ended up with say Downs after adding Kincaid for example, wow what a potential arsenal we could field next year.

All in all, love when the draft is volatile like this, makes all the picks that much more interesting to watch and excited for tonight.

I have felt for a while that they are not that worried about LB. I think they'd like to add DT. I hope they are willing to trade up to get quality help on the oline. Bergeron, Avila, Mauch, Tippman, Schmitz among the names I would target.

If the Bills have a bunch of guys with similar grades available, I think they'll choose either the (1) MLB - if he's a rangy coverage type, or (2) OL.  But if there's a player available with a much higher grade than everyone else, other positions come into play (though, not QB of course).
