Roughing the Passer

This just in from the Tuesday Owner’s Meeting: League will not back out of “protecting the QB.”

Quote

“Everyone knows if your quarterback is not healthy, you don’t have a chance to win,” said Vincent, a former defensive back. “We’re not changing the philosophy around that call.”

-Troy Vincent

NFL Executive VP Football Operations

I like what Shannon had to say about this. It won’t change until Jerry Jones and the Cowboys get screwed by a (non) RTP call in the playoffs.

Article in The Athletic

*Also, no one is asking them to back off protecting the QBs, the fans just want RTP to actually be RTP and not routine tackles. It’s a huge penalty that affects the outcome of games.

As long as Brady keeps benefiting from the calls, we can all sleep well at night 🙃

This is a false narrative that continues to be spread as if it is fact.  Look it up.  Brady has been the beneficiary of a ridiculously low number of roughing the passer calls over the past few seasons.

Excuse me sir, I don't let facts get in the way of hating on Brady! 😤

Now get out of here & don't come back (unless the facts support my Brady hate)!

Josh gets hit late a lot and does not get the calls for Roughing the Passer.  He is a top 3 QB in the NFL (I think the best), why is he getting knocked to the ground late often when he is inside the pocket?  And, the tripping call missed on Jones was silliness.

It is infuriating not as much for the non calls, but, the wear and tear and potential injuries.

Why do the Ref's not protect JA17?

Brady seldom gets hit but when he does there is a high percentage that are called RTP.

When did JA17 last donate to Zebra Retirement Fund?

Personally I think he should run thru zebras a few times.

Vincent is an idiot. Always has been. You can’t teach common sense and you can’t fix stupid.

Fact of the matter is they need to decide what the threshold is for roughing and call it consistently. Personally, I would love to see them do anything consistently, just me. Right now almost anything would be better than suffering through these subjective interpretations and arbitrary applications.

That RTP call last night when “Let’s Ride” was tackled around the waist was egregious.

The quicker fans can stop blaming non calls and bad calls on every single game and accept it’s a flawed system the easier things will be.
They clearly need some tweaks and maybe adding an extra challenge or two for coaches during the game. Making more plays reviewable would help such as roughing the passer.
The only two calls I have seen actually determine the games were of course the Brady call, and the Chris Jones call on Matt Ryan for saying bad words. I can handle an extra 15 minutes a game to add a couple extra challenges if it helps sort this mess.
Officiating is bad in every sport, there is no perfect science to it and everyone fans included have a bias

ROBOTS.

They went overboard after the Tua fiasco. Take it out on Tua and the Dolphins, not the rest of the league and the fans. I’m all for looking after the QB, (especially OURS!), but there need to be limits to these horrible calls. It will run people off if it keeps going this way. How about we at least have real grass in EVERY STADIUM POSSIBLE.

I’m seriously wondering, what percentage of concussions come from head contact with the turf? Sure, there are other possibilities, but it’s usually head on turf it seems. Grow some grass!

It’s not the number of calls. He typically avoids contact like a BTTCH. It’s when he does get hit it’s usually a weak RTP

All respect, I'm not sure that quite disproves.  I think defenders are cautious about hitting Brady, because he was given the flag for quite a long stretch.

I suppose it is difficult to legislate intent, hence why the NFL doesn’t do it (men in black to overrule calls notwithstanding), but any major penalty, which is the 15+ yard variety, needs to be adjudicated by a 3rd party. It’s tough when you have someone like Sterratore sitting at home saying “that should not be a penalty,” which echoes the thoughts of everyone else with common sense. Like I said, I hope it happens to Jerry’s Cowboys, preferably against the Eagles in the playoffs, which sends Dallas home. I guarantee we’ll be looking at change after that.
