I’m thinking Keenum would be #2, but if a team going into a playoff situation needed a QB and was willing to shell out a 1/2/3 Beane may jump at the opportunity knowing Barkley was still there

Nobody would ever offer that much for Keenum on the final year of his contract.  He went for a 7th.  The NFL isn't like the movie Draft Day. To put this in perspective, if someone had offered Cleveland a 6th, they wouldn't have sent him to the Bills for a 7th.  Same story like last year when some were saying trade Mitch for a #1 if offered-Nobody offered.

Beane will probably do something like this;

extend the contract a year, adding a salary of say $4m to 2023 and converting $5m of the $6m 2022 salary into a signing bonus. The cap would then be:

2022: $3.5m

2023: $6.5m

lowers the cap hit and gives you a solid backup for two years not just one

Likely his agent will want an incentive for number of games he starts in as well as a roster bonus due just before free agency.

This way if Bills are tempted to cut him next season he has a chance to get on a roster.

Josh does not get knocked out very often but if he is starting a number of games he is worth it otherwise Bills would have signed a lower priced player.

Bills will likely counter with lower salaries since they will be on hook for more this year for one year rental.

I understand that but Josh seems ok

this is such an overused statement. Players switch teams all the time...coaches watch film of other teams...there are scouts who watch other teams play all season. I don't think signing Bates is going to give Patriots a better chance to beat us

I doubt they would just sign him for information,  there was to be some interest in his talent there

So Keenum is a cap hit of $3.5M for Buffalo?

A better QB than Bridgewater with a smaller cap hit. A MUCH better QB than Kyle Allen with a slightly larger cap hit.

And all it cost us was a pick that would’ve never made the roster… nice.

Is that now confirmed  (3.5m) cap hit?  if yes then it's very reasonable amount for a backup.

I don’t want to spend on Barkley, but if he’s willing to come back for a min deal as QB3, that’s a no-brainer given what he brings off the field and in the QB room.

I agree ,  offer limited guarantee contract and then maybe draft QB in late rounds or sign undrafted free agent QB to compete with Barkley for 3 string job

and we still have a 7th round pick

It's now very manageable at 3.5 mllion,  i am much happier hearing of lower number.  Now we just need to sign a starting level corner and this free agency period would be a complete success for Beane.

Like everything I am seeing and CB just adds a cherry on top

This signing looks like it’s vintage Beane..

Got the Browns to pay his $1m bonus for the cost of a 7th and at $3.5m Keenan is good value ..assume he might be chasing a ring also..

Hopefully he won’t see the field in meaningful action just like Mitch ..apart from Week 18 when they have clinched home field… but if Josh misses a couple of games Case might  be a chance of getting us a win…

Well done Beane.,,

This would be fine with me. Keenum already has some proven reps with Diggs....Minneapolis Miracle......so that's a plus. Luckily, that's just an insurance policy in this Case!

Look at Keenum's stats a few years ago. He nearly had a 4,000 yarder.

I'm sort of surprised the Browns let him go to be honest; they're not seriously looking to keep Mayfield on as the number two QB are they? And if they're acting as if Watson will be suspended for a large period of time, and expecting Mayfield to step in, then I thought Keenum would be the perfect back up. Think we've got a steal, especially if we get Barkley back too to support Josh.
