TJ Watt Slugfest

“Punching out” the ball is a key strategy for today’s NFL defenses. TJ Watt took it to another level last night.

How many hands do you have to throw at a ball carrier before it’s “unsportsmanlike” or just plain assault?

I remember TJ doing this to Josh, on one of his scrambles last year.

He missed the ball completely and hit Josh in the gut/chest.  Josh just glared at him like WTF was that?

I think it should be a penalty if the defensive player misses the ball and punches the player.

Oh, and screw TJ Watt.

Let's go Buffalo!

TJ not JJ. And if the intent is clear enough that he was going for the ball I don’t see why they would ever flag that.

It is a penalty. But it's also smart to try to punch the ball out. Just can't miss and hit people.

If you miss bad enough and punch someone, the intent doesn't matter.

You miss the ball.... with a punch?   Ejection.

My view of him has completely gone downhill.

Classless.

Does throwing a bunch get you automatically ejected now? If so, I agree. If you miss the ball and hit the player, you’re history. He then should have been ejected.

By just flagging him for 15, the refs seemed to be measuring “intent”, which I don’t agree with.

by that standard, quite a few Bills defenders are also lacking “class” as you put it. Punching the ball out is taught by coaches all over the league. If you screw up and hit the guy in the head or something and get flagged that’s on you, but hard for me to accuse the defender of being classless. They’re trying to make a play.

He has been doing that and getting away with it since at least last year.  Dude hit at least 3 guys in the nads last season.

Idk... I think what is typically taught is punching at the ball while tackling. Its usually a single punch while wrapping your arms on the ball carrier. TJ took it too an entire new level and wasn't even trying to tackle. It didn't even look like he had a clear shot at punching. He was just throwing haymakers there.

Are you daft? Or, being sarcastic?

I mean, you can't punch another player period. If you could, imagine all the abuse that would happen. Players would always be "punching the ball" and hitting the other player on accident. Watt should have been tossed.

I was going to post this.  Not sure it was last year, might have been 2019.  I didn't even think he was going for the ball, I think he was using that as an excuse to punch Josh.

There's also this from 2019, where he punched Sam Darnold right in the nuts

IMHO they should flag him for it, he's not just going for the ball, he has a pattern of punching the players.

Punching the ball out is legit, and if you're really trying for the ball and miss OK, but Watt has been punching the players, not the ball.  His first hit was right into the chest.

It is a foul if the ref deems his intention was to hit the player, or if he just blatantly misses the ball.  He was over the top last night.  I get the peanut punch, but that’s regoshdarn diculous.

Lets just give refs more ammo to eject a bills defensive player when he misses the ball with a swing

I hear what you are saying and you make a valid point...but to be Devil's advocate, what if a player is legitimately trying to knock a pass down and hit the QB's facemask? 15 yards right there.

To me, being punched in the gut or arm doesn't feel any less painful because it was on accident.

Watt should be suspended for the forearms to the head last night.  He wasn't going for the ball.  The hit to gut he may have been, but the 2 forearms he was not.

Pittsburgh has been dirty for years, but always play it off as "being physical."  Hines Ward is the dirtiest WR I have ever seem,  and James Harrison is close with Burfict for the dirtiest player I've seen.

Agreed I had to clarify that - I was more thinking of a slight miss, where a guy goes for the ball and gets the ballcarrier’s elbow for example.

We’re talking about two different things. If Watt has been pushing that line, as @Hapless Bills Fan and others have claimed, then he should be flagged/fined, even suspended if he does it enough. I was more just speaking about the technique (punching the ball out) more generally. It’s taught and used by many, if not all teams. Sorry if that wasn’t clear. I don’t think anyone that does it is “classless” or a “scumbag” as others have said. TJ Watt may be though. He’s aware he’s going to get more leeway from the refs given his rep and accomplishments.

That’s ridiculous but at the same time the whistle had not blown.

I agree, in that case. I just hate the Stealers, and dirty teams in general.

Really?  In that replay you saw him going for the ball?  Not really.  He is swinging like a moron.
