The Loss is on Mcdermot.

Recommended Posts

And the reason is he turned the defensive plays back to Leslie Frazier in the second half of the game.  Mcdermot has to fire Leslie Frazier and get a guy that fits his defensive idea.  Zone blitzing, defensive line stunts, confusing the QB just like the way they played in the first half.  All of sudden the defensive playbook stopped and went to Frazier's cover two the same defense we say in the Bengals, Eagles,Browns, the first dolphin game and the patriots game in buffalo and fox-bro.   If you look something happend to the Defense after the browns game Mcdermot took over the defensive calls in Miami and Dallas the Bills were blitzing all over the place confusing Ryan Fitzpatrick and Dak Prescott in the Ravens game you can see him with the playbook in his hands calling the defense.  Mcdermot is a young belichick he can confuse any Qb out there but he has to stop protecting Lesile Frazier and get rid of him.

So you analyze this game and conclude: "need more defense."

Have you had a look at the offensive side of the ball, and in particular the QB?

You might find some interesting stuff there if you have a look.

In Buffalo when the offense stinks we want to fire the DC. As a twist on the theme when the defense sucked under Rex we did fire one of the best OCs in the league.... so........

the effort in the second half was a 38 point pace.  the op was quite clear on distinguishing between the good half, and the complete debacle second half.

It was a team loss. All units and players to blame. It's not all on McDermott and Frazier shouldn't be fired.

the defense was not only not elite against winning teams this year, it was only about average. Considering the amount of draft capital invested on the defense, average results vs good teams is not that spectacular.

They aren't the 2000 Ravens. Fire the DC.

McD was the main reason we got to play in this game in the first place. We should all be thanking our lucky stars that he decided to come to Buffalo and turn this franchise around.

The second half collapse was tough to watch but it happened mainly because the opposing QB started playing like an all pro while ours reverted to his worst college tendencies.

This loss is on a lot more people than just McD

I was ready to agree with you and then I read your post.

We got overly conservative when we should have kept the peddle to the floor.

With that being said we F...d by the Refs.  This isnt little league.  A player is responsable for his laps in judgement.  That was a fumble and a TD.

I was at the game and you called it right we just tried to sit on a lead and play preevent the whole second half. We kept rotating out our good players. Sending only four and freezing our linebackers

McDermott’s time in Buffalo will be short if he keeps being conservative.  Then we will need to bring in an offensive mined head coach

wasn’t on him fully but he WAS a major problem and has been most of the year. Growth mindset coach you preach it. Now practice it.

Ultimately, the buck stops with McD and the loss is on him in that regard. I’ll give you that. Frazier and McD can’t sack Watson when they get a clean shot, or tackle the receiver 3 yards short of the first down when they’ve got the opportunity. Where McD needs to take a long look at himself is his ideas on offense, hiring of OC and priorities in assembling his roster. The offense isn’t good enough, couldn’t hang with the big boys all year, and was much of the same yesterday. It shouldn’t be surprising. Breaking the 20 point barrier is a struggle with the offensive personnel on this team and this OC calling the shots.

If I were McD (or Terry perhaps). I would ask a veteran coach whose opinion I respect to review my in game decisions over this past season.  Review play calls as well.  And give me unvarnished opinions on whether and where I need to be more or less aggressive.

The Offense did sport the D a 16 point 3rd  lead to play with....

I agree with the OP here, but for many different reasons. A piece written for the Sporting News, and posted in a different thread in here, illuminates McDummie's issues very well.  Here's a link:  https://www.sportingnews.com/us/nfl/news/nfl-playoffs-2020-bills-sean-mcdermott-coach-bad-calls/1hmflvozh6wsi1vbwi4iax3o7v

McDermott could have done better.  However,  this game was stolen.  There were three separate calls by the refs, any one of which likely results in a Bills win

1. The stolen "common sense" td

2. phantom blindside block

3. missed delay of game on 3 and 18.

These are not the normal "refs make mistakes".  Each of these were horrible outcome alternating calls.  No similar calls went the other way.

Shhhh you'll upset the blind fans who will spout our defense being the whole reason we are even playoff caliber...facts are coaching has been the difference from sitting on a bye with a division crown and a home playoff game...frazier has cost us two maybe even 3 games this year incl yesterdays collapse and daboll is just clueless..daboll for sure needs fired he is our weakest link but it seems all our coaches inc McDermott lack situational play calling and game time decisions and that's why our season still isn't carrying on

On to the off-season.

Man, I really agree with this.   That was a team loss.

McDermott should have challenged the kickoff call.

Frazier and Daboll clearly could have called better games.

EVERY guy on offense and defense could have made plays they didn't.

They'll all learn from this, and they will get better.

As fans, we finally have a good football team.   Enjoy it.

Everything after 16-0 reeked of an ultra conservative philosophy that unfortunately has been Sean's trademark. It cost us yesterday's game. Yes Josh played poorly in that 2nd half but we took the foot off the petal both on offense and defense. While Jordan Palmer is working with JA on deep throws and ball security,  somebody better help Sean with tactical issues. It's just frustrating for us fans to have to wait for both our young qb and HC to develop.

As long as the Bills exist,  they will never get calls in big games. Just accept it.

Philosophical team building question: are we better off finding a coordinator that's creative with the run game (Anthony Lynn-esk), draft a stud RB, and re-vamping the O line for more zone blocking and guards who can pull rather than forcing Josh to play read the defense for 60 mins? If you run more play action you have more opportunities to get the QB making plays on the run which is Josh's biggest strength. It might mean having to trade Morse but it would seem a better fit for how McD likes to play.
