When Was the Last Time Bills Could Rest Starters?

I tried finding this information, but didn't have any luck.

I think this one might have to be answered from memory banks.

I was just thinking about how cool it is that there's actually discussion regarding whether the Bills should rest their starters this week.

When was the last time we had this option??

I'd say 1995 - they were 10-5 and had clinched the division, and they ended up starting Todd Collins vs. the Oilers in the final game. He was absolutely awful. Van Pelt came in and made it look a little more respectable.

1999, they had the 2nd WC sewn up and nowhere to go

Colts took a bigger dive against the Bills the last game of 1999, with 1st wrapped up

------------------------------------------

last game of 1991 Reich started and the Bills lost at Detroit to end the season.

Kelly went to the bench the 2nd half of the prior game as well.

Thurman sat most of the game, and Barry Sanders took the rushing title that year!

1998 - We had our spot racked up and went into NO with Rob Johnson as QB and laid it on Iron Mike and the hapless Saints.  https://www.footballdb.com/games/boxscore.html?gid=1998122706.

I was at that game and very dissapointed Flutie did not play.

1999 - Who could forget Rob Johnson's massive performance winning him the starting job vs Tennessee? https://www.footballdb.com/games/boxscore.html?gid=2000010206

Used to be they could rest their starters any time of year, because it didn’t matter anyway

Yup

Lions were thankful the Bills took a dive, let them clinch the division

i looked it up and Kelly did not get hurt in the 15th game of 1991, and did sit out the 16th and helped kicked the crap out of the Chiefs in the Divisional Playoff Game

Every season before they started making the playoffs.

1999 they rested Doug Flutie.

I don't think they should do a full rest though.  I think going in cold will hurt them more than help them.  They don't do so well on bye weeks.

Bills under McDermott are 3-0 after bye weeks. Not sure if It’s relevant to check any further back .

interesting.  I remember incorrectly then.  I still don't think they should go in cold.

I agree. If I had to venture a guess, I’d say McD rotates players in, kind of preseason style and gets them out after a set number of series depending on the player. Maybe a few vets sit this one out on the inactive list.

Definitely the 1999 Rob Johnson game if we're talking about a situation in which the Bills had secured a playoff spot/seed and the outcome didn't matter. Although the outcome of that game ended up having pretty big ramifications.

I was at that game and multiple people around me were saying how Johnson looked like a real QB and how Flutie could not do what Johnson does- they skipped the part where Flutie was like 17-8 vs 1-4 with Johnson.

That cat had one of the greatest arms ever

I agree which is why he stuck around so long after showing he was not an effective starter.
