Punching Bag
He was someone who fans in my bar watching Green Bay thought was under utilized. I was advocating Bills get him as a free agent. He is a player for who which I wish Ed Reed was still here. He has the skills Ed Reed had and Reed has the experience to get him to progress faster.

True. I mean he seems to be progressing fairly quickly as is. His first 2 years playing the position full time and arguably playing at the highest level in the game

Summary of Ronin's Analysis: He's crap because... (70+ pages later)... Film, which I swear I don't cherry pick--I'm above that, you plebians--and it's all McD's fault and should fall on their shoulders, and it's smart to listen to me and get new coaches every two years (so I can be right when the team never builds anything, and point back to my posts about being right). 3
elroy16
Quote On throws of 20-plus yards over that same period (past two years), Hyde has allowed a single reception from nine targets; three of those targets ended in interceptions, another one ended in a dropped interception and another two resulted in pass breakups — if that doesn’t tell you how much of a difference-maker he’s been for the Bills at the top of the defense, nothing will. Over two years, teams have only tried to throw deep with Hyde in coverage nine times and have one completed one freaking pass. That is nuts. What a fantastic free agent signing. TigerJ
So Hyde's performance in 2018 makes him the best free safety since 2017? Epic! Just kidding. It's good to see him get recognized. It's also nice to see that Brandon Beane and Sean McDermott seem to have a good grip on how to build a team.
Buffalo716
He is honestly one of the reasons poyer gets so many statistics Teams do not try him and when they do he makes them pay He is a stud and I love his versatility Him and Poyer do work great together in pass defense

plenzmd1
Am I missing something? Does this “ highest rated safety since 2017” mean the same thing as “ highest rated last year”?

Does this “ highest rated safety since 2017” mean the same thing as “ highest rated last year”? No His work at free safety alone that year earned a coverage grade of 91.6 — the seventh-best single-season grade ever recorded by a player with at least 300 snaps at free safety. Jairus Byrd (2012) - Bills Ed Reed (2009) - Ravens Eddie Jackson (2018) - Bears Charles Woodson (2015) - Oakland (and his last year) Devin McCourty (2016) - Satan's team O.J. Atogwe (2007) - Rams (in St Louis) are the only safeties who have recorded a better single-season coverage grade at free safety than Hyde did in 2017 — and that list spans 860 players across 13 seasons. 1

MJS
I think it was Bill Belichick that talked about how Hyde and Poyer were so hard to play against because they wait till the very last second to switch to their true alignment in the defense, so the QB never quite knows exactly what coverage it is before the snap. Something like that. I also remember that play Hyde made where he completely abandoned his assignment to go make an INT. It was a pure instinct play and he wasn't supposed to be anywhere near the ball based on the coverage. He just somehow knew the QB would throw it there. Great to have someone with instincts and coverage ability.

Great to have someone with instincts and coverage ability. It's true. When I saw tis thread title I was going to say "but he doesn't always play as the FS" but when you read the article it does break that down. McDermott has said consistently in this scheme there really is limited difference to the two safety jobs. Poyer and Hyde alternate often. Having two guys who can do that allows you to diagnose so much and it is a big reason why our pass defense is so good. Makes it more difficult for teams to "choose their matchup". The same guy that did this write up about how good Hyde was did one on the top 5 safety duos in the league recently and Hyde/and poyer didn’t come up. For real? He apparently has Poyer rated so low that, when teamed with a guy whom he says is the best safety over the last 2 years, they still aren’t cracking the top 5? That makes slim to no sense. Im not all upset about it. But really doesn’t add up. Edited June 29, 2019 by Stank_Nasty

Im not all upset about it. But really doesn’t add up. They graded Poyer a 68.4 in 2018 after grading him 87.7 in 2017. He didn't play as well in 2018 as in 2017 that is true though I think the PFF grade is a little harsh on him. In 2017 the Bills safety duo graded out top of PFFs safety duo list. The problem when they compile these lists is they only look at the most recent season. I don't think PFF is the be all and end all. But it does have uses. 1 hour ago, Cripple Creek said: I love me some Hyde, but, is it saying much when someone states he’s the highest rated since 2017? So, he was the highest rated in 2018? I remember being super intrigued because GB had so many primetime games at that time , I was familiar with and loved Hyde as a player, he always seemed to make clutch plays and be around the football. GB had him playing everywhere though , slot and outside cb , as well as S sometimes. McDermott is a genius for identifying Hyde as an elite S. 9 hours ago, Cripple Creek said: Then the thread title has nothing to do with their comparisons. Can you elaborate on this?
