Shaq Lawson Sets Sights on Pro Bowl & Super Bowl in His 3rd Season

Recommended Posts

I am wondering why if he was having a problem with his takeoff why was he not getting his weight down to close to what our other DE plays at......

Shaq Lawson Out to Prove Doubters Wrong as Buffalo Bills Training Camp Nears

Shaq Lawson has traveled a bumpy road since being selected with the No. 19 overall pick in the 2016 NFL draft. Injuries have limited him to just 21 of a potential 32 games played and his role within former coach Rex Ryan’s defensive scheme probably wasn’t ideal for his skill-set. Furthermore, his weight fluctuated as he was asked to play different roles. Drafted as a traditional defensive end, Lawson dropped weight to play outside linebacker before he was asked to bulk up again to move back to end.

His body couldn’t get up to speed with the constant weight fluctuation. It’s difficult to remove all blame from Lawson, but these issues definitely played a role in the former ACC Defensive Player of the Year’s slowed development.

Didnt we have another former 3rd round pick that was constantly being moved positions (and eventually it didnt work out?)

Hoping Shaq can get this worked out.

...coming back healthy, I like the sound of this commitment....but he better fulfill his commitment AND produce......

Bills DE Shaq Lawson said he's committed to getting into better shape, and that he has lost 12 pounds.

Lawson is now tipping the scales at 263. He wants to get down to 260. "I knew what I had to do," Lawson said after again struggling with injury last season. "(Sitting) back and watching our playoff game I was like, ‘I’ve got to stay on the field. Whatever I have to do to stay on the field I’m going to do it.’ I’ve got to be the best I can be and what they drafted me to be." Lawson claims he's faster, and that he feels "more fluid." 2018 is shaping up as a make-or-break year for the 2016 first-rounder after he tallied just six sacks between 21 2016-17 appearances.

Credit to McDermott for pushing Shaq and not gifting him the starting role. In the Whaley/Rex years spots weren't earned. If they were still around, the excuse would be that Shaq is a former 1st rounder entering his 3rd year and he would be expected to start. Instead McDermott and Beane worked to bring in legitimate competition and they have him running with the 2s. By all accounts this has pushed him to be better. That's the kind of culture change we've needed for 20 years.

I think Shaq is going to have to dominate to leap from Trent Murphy which I don't expect.

He's fighting for a roster spot now and hopefully this weight cut helps and he can be an integral part of the rotation.

Honestly, this is like finding money in the washing machine.  Anything he gives us is a bonus.  He’s a solid run defender but seems to lack explosion as a pass rusher.  But I’d rather take a chance on him “getting it” than give him away like they did Ragland.

Shaq Lawson has heard those trade rumors. And he's ready to...

ORCHARD PARK, N.Y — On the first day of Buffalo Bills mandatory minicamp last week, Shaq Lawson made a play he should have been making a lot more often since the team drafted him No. 19 overall in 2016.

The result of the play was simple: Lawson swatted a Nathan Peterman pass at the line of scrimmage. It was just one rep at practice and a play an athlete of Lawson’s caliber should make all the time. But it was how he made it that stood out. After practice, Lawson walked over to Peterman and told him he knew exactly what was coming.

“It was a boot play, and I actually knew the tendencies of the play from the whole OTA,” Lawson said. “I knew what the offense has been giving us, so I knew it was going to be a boot because the tight end blocked out and left me on an island. He wanted me to go all the way down. I just knew it was a boot at the time.”

I dont know if a 4th round pick is exactly a "give a way"

That is pretty solid territory to find a offensive linemen......which we need

Good for him.  Like to see this kind of dedication and drive.  Hope it translates to better play for him.

I'd be very surprised if it didn't. How can it not? Injury (knock on wood) is about all I can think of. We know he has all the measurables.

Haven't understood the hate for Lawson.  Most DE's don't get 10 sacks in their first season.  He provided us with solid run defense.  We were missing a player like Star.  Jumping ship after two seasons for the position of defensive end is too fast for me.  I think Lawson would play a nice role with Trent Murphy in the mix.  Look at how long it took Clowney.

We and Shaq were missing a real coach and d coordinator. We had Fat Rex and fully pregnant Rob. I am hoping year 2 for Shaq in our current scheme with our current defensive coaches makes a difference.

A 4th round pick two years down the road...

Its a disappointing return for what they (Whaley) gave up for him ( Ragland) - a 2nd and two fourths...

Yes if you look at what we spent

I don’t blame beane for that though

Agree ... hence why I specifically mentioned Whaley...( also Rex had his involvement as well.)

According to a Rodak article Whaley apparently tried to move up higher to get Ragland... wonder what he was offering move up to pick 32?

http://www.espn.com.au/blog/buffalo-bills/post/_/id/24451/2016-buffalo-bills-draft-picks-analysis-for-every-selection

Bills worked the phones Friday: Whaley said the Bills wanted Ragland so badly that they started calling every team in the second round, starting with the Browns at No. 32, looking for a trade partner to move up and select Ragland. They found an eventual match with the Chicago Bears at No. 41. Part of the reason Ragland might have slipped into the second round was an enlarged aorta, NFL Network reported this week, although Whaley said the Bills have medically cleared Ragland, and Ragland said on a conference call that a heart specialist told him that he is "fine."

What a shocking draft 2016 turned out to be...two years later Shaq and Washington are the only survivors I believe, and they had both want to show some improvement to be here next year.....

I lost my mind that night, the board was falling in the Bills favor and Whaley went full bozo on that draft board. SEC defensive player of the year Deion Jones was sitting in plain sight but no he needed Ragland because the Alabama guys looked at Ragland as a leader in the huddle or some other silliness.

Dear Doug,

Did you go blind from watching all that porn?

If both Shaq and Adolphis can take a step this year, the defense will be scary good. I mean what McDermott did with a completely overhauled secondary last year, and now adding Edmunds, Star, Murphy, Phillips, etc... there are a lot of pieces in place, so these guys can kind of rejuvenate them selves without the pressure of having to necessarily be the guys...

In a sense like a poster said above it's like finding money in the washing machine or in the pocket of an old coat...

I'm rooting for every player to play his best but Lawson generates more talk per action than anyone.  Do something more than swat a pass because you memorized your own team's plays.  Newsflash:. You don't get to go to practice with our opponents.

And enough with the haters blaming Whaley.  10000000000000% Rex.  Rex's antiquated scheme caused us to draft guys that can't play in today's NFL.  We now have a coach that knows what to do.  Let's see if he can get some 6th round type of rotational production out of Shaq.  It would help the team.  None of this falls on Lawson, Whaley, McDermott or Frazier.  It is on Rex.

Matthew Fairburn of Lawson's Day 5 at SJF:

Shaq Lawson steps up

With Trent Murphy taking a veteran rest day, Shaq Lawson got a chance to work with the first-team defense. He got practice started on a high note with a batted ball at the line of scrimmage and a tackle for loss during red-zone work. This isn’t to say Lawson will be able to push Murphy for the starting job. However, in an offseason in which McDermott and Beane haven’t been shy about putting Lawson on blast, he’s responding well.

And really your 3rd DE is getting a lot of reps. Great if he steps up.

I think Shaq is going to be traded, hopefully for a WR

He'll either be on the team or possibly traded.  He's too young, cheap, and talented to be outright released.   I can see him being on the team given how much McDermott and Frazier like to rotate the DL.

i kinda feel bad for the kid and i got a gut feeling that he will pan out not only as a very good edge setter, but will also greatly improve his tfls, qb pressures and even sacks.

i just hope this doesn't happen on another team and we get nothing out of it.

injuries do happen and getting rid of him anytime soon would be stupid. he may become a very important piece. i don't really see trent being a 3 down de.

i don't think he can handle it and have the success that we need from him. his one and only job is to incapacitate the qb.

i know the depth is good, but i'd also tinker with the notion of kicking him inside of murphy here and there. even when he's at end we will have lorax to cover him and pass rush.

If he wasn’t a 1st rounder, he could be a solid Chris Kelsay type.  I know Bills fans hated him but CK on a good team would have been a solid rotation player. I can see Shaq doing that.  He doesn’t seem to have any elite pass rushing skills however.

From Matthew Fairburn:

Sack party

As mentioned above, the Bills’ defensive line was a terror on Wednesday. Kyle Williams, Jerry Hughes, Shaq Lawson and Harrison Phillips all got into the backfield for sacks. Lawson was back there more than once and also had another batted pass at the line of scrimmage, making for his second straight good day of practice. Overall, the Bills’ offensive line is overmatched against the defensive line, which should be back to being one of the better defensive lines in the AFC.
