I think Smith is quite a bit better than Tyrod and would absolutely be an upgrade. He's a very smart QB. Know his defensive coverages, can read the (full) field well, find his open receivers, check into the right plays. He's accurate, similar to Tyrod in not turning the ball over. I think hed he'd be a great veteran QB to have around to help develop a rookie, and he's more than good enough to keep that rookie off the field for a couple/few years. Id give up similar compensation to what they gave up for Benjamin - 3rd and 5th/6th. Not sure if that'll be enough though with all the QB desperate teams. Id probably even consider a 2nd if that was the Bills only option for an upgrade at the QB position. Like If it came down to either Tyrod next year or Smith for a 2nd, I'd probably pull the trigger on Smith. Im not going to say that Alex Smith is "better" then TT.....the numbers really dont support that and Smith has his share of warts. The thing is that Smith might be a better "fit" for what we are trying to do because he will throw from the pocket and has a quicker release. He also has some mobility to him. If we do this though we need to draft a QB high.

But there are a few things - like Tyrod, the Chiefs owe him a bonus if he is on the roster sometime in early March but it is"only" $2 million. So, I am sure they would like to trade him before then. Next, Bradford and either Keenum or Bridgewater will be free agents. These players are "free" (no trade needed). Same may go for Cousins. Really cheap-ish signees could be Fitzpatrick or McCown. Those two will still cost you~ $10 million however! Alex Smith will cost $17.5 million if Acquired in early March and $15.5 if acquired after March. http://www.spotrac.com/nfl/kansas-city-chiefs/alex-smith-3337/ NFL players can not be traded in 2018 until Mar 14 at 4 pm. Spotrak says the 2018 roster bonus of 2 mill is due at training camp. Training camps are after the April draft as a mini-camp then full camp in summer. Not sure wich one they are referring to. If traded before training camp Bills would owe the bonus. Edited January 17, 2018 by cba fan

Haha yea. Truthfully Alex Smith is like the enhanced version of the Tyrod Taylor is he good debate. Alex has won a lot, has pretty strong numbers, and seems like a good leader. Some of the playoff losses he has like you mention are head scratching especially that Colts one where his defense just disappeared. Yet I completely understand his detractors. In this case, he's a 1 year, $17M rental. 4th at best unless the deal includes an extension. I might be prone to offering a 2019 conditional pick based on starts, performance, or a playoff appearance. Something like a 2019 4th, that can become a 3rd if he starts a playoff game for us, which becomes a 2nd if he starts in a conference championship game. That seems pretty reasonable to me. I like Smith as one of the best available vets for a rookie to learn from. Next in line would be Bradford followed by Josh McCown. i don’t think any available vet QBs are viable long-term answers, with the exception of Cousins (whom I think will be more expensive than is prudent). I have no problem trading 21 and a 2nd to move to the teens if they see a QB still available that they like. That is best-case for me. If that doesn’t happen, I wouldn’t be opposed to trading 21 or 22 for a 2nd and #1 on 2019. That gives the ability to fill lots of holes this year while still having ammo for next year to move up for a QB. Worst scenario is to trade up for a QB who they are not really sold on. His running is unnecessary but I get it fans get excited by it. WRS are open and he’s running around! This is crazy..... the facts are out there of how clutch Tyrod is, he’s not! I’m just gonna stop even trying to convince people Tyrod will never be a #1 QB ever again. If he could, there would be trade value. Bills will NOT get a single draft pick for Tyrod. That should tell you, especially with the amount of teams who need QBs. But guess what Teams will absolutely trade for Alex Smith... cause he’s night and day better. Alex Smith easily a top 15 QB. Adam727
I think a 2nd would get it done. The Chiefs are currently $14mil OVER the salary cap for 2018. Getting Smith off the roster frees up $17mil for them. They could wind up cutting Smith outright if they can't get a trade done and I'm guessing the league knows it, which will limit what the Chiefs will be able to ask / hold out for.
