They are among at least 57 people shot, according to police. that was as of 8 this morning. Last year, 19 people were killed and more than 100 people were shot over the long Fourth of July weekend. Gang and domestic related shootings don't make me fear the small chance of being shot by some random whack job when going out in public. Marv's Neighbor
This was a tragedy BUT, there are Mass Shootings in Chicago all the time. Never much outrage or comment on those! I lived there for a few years, and I know Highland Park, is not the South side of Chicago, but we still have the shootings and loss of life, that never makes the news.

More guns? Why is Chicago such a trigger for the gun rights people. Chicago is the "saloon" where you check your gun at the door... Obviously people aren't following the rules. What's the answer? Don't go tough on guns in Chicago? Yeah, that will help. Just like the gangster era... Gun control didn't start to happen until the violence spilled over on Michigan Avenue. Highland Park is that "Michigan Avenue" and the gun control they have been overturning since the 1990s now has to be revisited... Clock needs to be turned back to where it was starting when the police were outgunned by the gangsters. Police, just like 1920s... Need to get the arms race back. Every big city is dangerous to some extent, but Chicago has a reputation for a reason. From what I've read over the years, Chicago razed a number of housing projects years ago which had the unexpected consequences of fragmenting and widely dispersing gangs across South Chicago. There is minimal organization and tiny, but ever moving territories. Its been a recipe for crazy gang related violence since. Of course, the violence is usually confined to neighborhoods which most Chicagoans and tourists would never have a reason to visit but that doesn't make it less of an issue. https://greatcities.uic.edu/wp-content/uploads/2019/01/The_Fracturing_of_Gangs_and_Violence_in_Chicago.pdf

Political machine, etc... There's still a mixing of rural/country agrarian values too w/city. There are still places where it's perfectly legal to hunt in Chicago... And yes, on SouthSide, but not the media hyped places. LoL... It's an arms race out there. People can easily obtain guns for protection, outdoors/sportsman activities, etc... And close... ExiledInIllinois
You know what's really beyond messed up? "Irina and Kevin McCarthy were among the dead victims identified Tuesday. The couple had brought their toddler son to the parade, according to a neighbor, Adrienne Rosenblatt. The boy was found alone after the shooting. Rosenblatt said she recognized him in an online notice and showed it to the boy's grandparents, who brought the boy home from the police station. “It’s just sad,” Rosenblatt said, adding, “Do you call him an orphan?” " How ***** -ing sad is this story! 😞
