2022 Winter Olympics

Please merge if there's another thread. I didn't look too hard.

I'm just not as into it this year. I love to watch competition and root for our country, but I think that it's in China after everything that's happened over the past several years has really lessened my  enthusiasm.

Go USA 🇺🇸....I just don't think I'll be watching as much.

USA Network (NBCU) did a great job explaining the basics of curling tonight. So NBC reporter decides hes going to throw the stone, slides forward and falls on his ass and the stone goes maybe 5 feet ...

I think if there's one event I could compete, it would be curling. Kinda like shuffleboard minus the traction.

Thanks for starting this thread BTW!  I've got to really like curling, I can see why it can be a good beer drinking sport

I would watch it as a kid on the Canadian channel growing up. It was strangely captivating! And I didn’t even drink beer when I was eight. Well, not much….. 😋

I love the Olympics.  Watched the entire opening ceremony last night (the live broadcast tape delayed so I could FF through all commercials) though I found it kind of lackluster.

They are wasting no time giving us the men's downhill TONIGHT which I will be watching...probably my favorite single event of the games.

It's supposed to be shown for 2 hours between NBC and USA at 10 and 11pm.

Right at the top NBC did their best to have "Chinese experts" on and politicize the hell out of the games, mentioning how the USA is "diplomatically boycotting" the games and so on.

I hope they avoid that crap going forward--I want to watch the sports, not listen about Hitler and Joe Stalin wannabes like Putin and this big slob currently running China.  They kept showing close-ups of Jinping and it looks like he last washed his hair about 2 weeks ago.

Fee free to add your own BS commentary and strategy thoughts on sports you know nothing about.

I dislike the Canadian guy on their mixed curling team. Not a guy I want to grab a beer with. Feels like that’s should be one of the skills on a curling team. A guy people want to drink with.

He also seems controlling. He sweeps for his own throws which seems weird.

Gives off a strong ranch on chicken wing vibes.

For those who care: the men's downhill is in a delay situation because of high winds on the course.

It was supposed to start 10 minutes ago at 10:00pm eastern, now they are going to meet at 11pm eastern to see if they can go at midnight, eastern.

Watching some luge now on USA.

This was exciting as all get out.  Congrats to the Kiwis and this young lady.

I watched this live as the rest of the family went to bed.  This event is my daughters favorite.  ( The daughter who hiked the Appalachian Trail)

The next morning SIL turned on Peacock to watch this and I  watched in silence , not wanting to spoil the outcome.

The celebration  started by the Silver and bronze medalists was great.  Even greater when all 12 participants joined in.

Years ago, probably more than 20, my brother and I were watching the Olympics on a Canadian station. Long before getting results online, or having multiple stations showing events. That night, whoever carried it in the US was showing the same event we had seen earlier that day.  We start talking about the athletes, their countries, how we think they will do, etc.  Our parents start looking at us strangely and ask us how we know all this.  We told them we're just really into the Olympics.  Eventually we did tell them we had already seen the event earlier that day.

I dream of the days when I could watch the Olympics on CBC.

Now I'm stuck with garbage American TV with everyone else.

If you liked the celebration at the race, you'd also like the live, nationwide television interview her father did, following the race.

Clearly a very proud, intoxicated dad.  😀

I was just watching Mikaela Shiffrin sitting on the side, not moving after wiping out again.  They took it back to the studio but I assume she's still sitting there.  To think how much these athletes dedicate to these moments.  Must be gut-wrenching when something like this goes wrong.

So much pressure, reminds me of Simone Biles.  Mikela has 3 races left with a chance for a medal

Damn missed that - was watching a replay of the mens downhill tonight.

Reminded me of Dan Jansen - 1988 gold medal speed skater favorite who fell in a race hours after learning that his sister had succumb to cancer. Years later he got his gold.

That is the right attitude. Words of the German luge coach Norbert Loch after the win in the luge relay:

“That’s a great performance. And now, beer. We earned it.”

As a German myself, I have developed the hypothesis that we are good in any sport where you can sit on your behind. In the winter olympics, we are good in luge and bobsleigh. In the summer olympics, our best results are in equestrian, rowing, kayaking, and track cycling.

Shawn is a musicain as well as a star Olympian.  This was an event he sponsored at the Rose Bowl...I was in the tents backstage and there were photo ops. The one thing I will never forget about meeting him was ..and you can kind of see it here...dudes calves were like Broomsticks...SKINNY> That surprised me.p.jpeg.....

Hey Mup--very cool!  I knew you partied with the rich and famous, I just knew it.  This guy is an amazing athlete and Olympian.  Oh--back in the day I had a shot to get some photos with Jeff Blatnick (Olympic wrestler and local guy, RIP)  but bailed because i didn't want to bother him.  He was a big cat!

the event Shawn White sponsored that day had to have been a financial fiasco. It was supposed to have been a sports and music festival..he had built a snow ramp for tricks and ski jumps and had different different musical guests booked. But the weather down poured that day..I mean Buckets. It was amazing he was able to pull off what he did. But it wasnt very well attended. LA people dont do bad weather. Yeah I've met my fair share of "rich and famous" people along the way here and there. It is what it is.

Too bad Shawn couldn't medal in his last Olympics. But he competed against guys 20 years younger than he is. Pretty impressive all in all.

"Kaitlin Hawayek, an East Aurora native, and her partner, Jean-Luc Baker, made their Olympic debut in Group 3 of the competition. They skated to Donna Summer's "Love to Love You Baby" and "Bad Girls."

The two were Olympic alternates in 2018, and after it finally became official they would be competing in the 2022 Winter Games, Hawayek told 2 On Your Side, "There's something about that 'Olympian' title that just really just gives a little extra oomph."

Tough loss by the men's curling team this afternoon but the US hockey team is up 3-1 in the 2nd... keep up the pressure.

I think that game is from two nights ago.

I loved the Latvian ref's accent:

Penalty of two minute.

Elbows.

lol... you are right. I'm watching on a chromebook with sling and if you don't pay attention and just hit play it leaves out the tiny word "re-aired".
