Another Fan
For what seems like a rather generic topic for a Buffalo fan board I don’t ever remember there being a thread on it. Searching it here just brought instances where it was brought up in tailgating meals in threads…. I remember eating one in Anderson’s in Williamsville when I was around 7. All these years later it was still good. I tried Charlie The Butcher as I thought that was the best of them all. Went to the one by Sahlens stadium in that train station center. I thought it was good but not something I’d go out of way for. Anderson’s was just as good. Wegmans sells them by me. There actually not bad but not like the real thing. Bill from NYC
I like the Eagle House. The place has been in business for something like 100 years. Their wings are also off the charts great.
ChevyVanMiller
Again, I'm going to plug Wagner's in Lockport. The Beef on Weck and Wings stand-up to any of the more oft mentioned eateries. https://www.wagnersrestaurant.com/ And I suggest getting the: Johnnies Special $15.99 Beef on Weck & (5) Wings Edited August 31, 2021 by ChevyVanMiller

Just Jack
I typically (if I have time) go to Charlie The Butcher, since they also do fried bologna.

sherpa
Really good beef on weck is not that hard to do at home. I used to make Eckl's in Orchard Park a must visit every time I went back for various family functions. I made it a personal challenge to recreate that product at home, and I think I have.

BoW is often imitated, rarely perfected. Throw some pickles and carmelized onions in there, it will change your life. Bar Bill is the most memorable, even if it's entering "no one goes there anymore, it's too crowded" territory.
shrader
Nothing tops that moment where the horseradish hits you in that exact spot towards the back of the roof of your mouth and instantly clears your sinuses. Does the Boston Hotel still exist? They always had a good beef on weck back in the day.

rockpile
When I was a kid, the corner family pub in Hamburg on Lake Shore (Wanakah) was the Cloverbank Hotel. In those days it was common to have a family dining room, separated from the bar with a wall. We got mostly Fish Fries and beef sandwiches for dinner. The way I remember it being ordered, beef on weck was a sliced beef sandwich on white bread with mashed potatoes, drowned in gravy. This was meant to be eaten with a fork. Beef on Kummelweck then was what we know today as simply Beef on Weck, with the salty roll, but that was over 50 yeas ago .

What stole the show, however, was the German potato salad. I had forgotten how good that could be! We arrive for the opener on Saturday and depart VERY early Monday. I want to get in Ted’s hot dogs, quality wings, beef on weck and Bocce pizza with cup and char pepperoni. I’ll be with our DIL who is a vegetarian. Hmmmm, WNY is NOT know for the vegetarian food. Fortunately, she is very interested in seeing The Anchor Bar just for the history of it and I can knock out wings and BoW with one meal. . Sundancer
Cole’s is my favorite. Love the place. Like that they slightly toast the inside of the bun. I like the Schwables experience and their German potato salad is superb but I don’t care for their weck. Roll is not salted enough.

Big Dan did not need any padding under his suit! 😁 It was a bar/restaurant but during dinner hours it was a real neighborhood pub. 😀 Many times after supper during the week when it was slower, the Moms would visit in the dining room while kids played and the Dads moved into the bar area. Early sixties reality was not Leave it to Beaver, but working class family values were strong. The building is not even there anymore.
