I agree that they seemed to be trying to give this practice a bit of a "game like" atmosphere, wearing game-day jerseys and pants instead of shorts etc.

Don't like this though

I agree - no idea how bad it is.  Will be an interesting watch and will be interesting to see the impact on DL battle this has.

Does this allow Zimmer and Phillips to make the roster and Butler ends up on IR or something.

Those Were the Days, My Friend.  Enjoy them while you can!

It’s “tax free” day In Ohio for school supplies and clothes so everywhere was mobbed. Also why do kids need like 200 glue sticks? Will  they be  glueing all the #2 pencils together? . I need to catch up on practice.

That leadoff by Matt Parrino is NOT amusing, especially in the context of another player leaving with a head injury!!!!!

BAD @Matt Parrino, don't scare us like that again!

Allen went 4-for-4 in his first series in the field with completions going to Stefon Diggs (2), Gabriel Davis and Dawson Knox. He also used his legs on the drive to move the team down the field. Isaiah McKenzie would finish the drive scoring on a pitch.

In his second series, Allen and the Bills found the end zone again. Allen opened with a 20-yard pass to Gabriel Davis. A sack backed up the Bills offense but the drive was kept alive following another Allen throw to Davis that drew a pass interference penalty. Allen would finish the drive with a score on the ground.

Extended look at Spencer Brown/Tommy Doyle with 1st team

Brown started at left tackle and Doyle was in at right tackle as the Bills trotted out the first-team offense. Doyle stood out the most because it was his best practice yet. Two reps in particular stood out.

After a loss against Efe Obada early in practice, Doyle came back and held his own in a one-on-one rematch rep against the 29-year-old who’s had a strong camp. Obada tried to his his power and hands to push Doyle back into the quarterback, but instead the rookie recovered after the initial impact and stood his ground, derailing Obada’s charge. The best rep of the day came against fellow rookie Greg Rousseau. The two were going at it on the rep when Doyle gaining leverage and threw Rousseau to the turf.

Brown’s best rep came against Mario Addison and similarly to Doyle, he lost early but made an astounding recovery. Addison used his lead arm and stuck it in Brown’s chest, getting him off balance. But Brown gained his balance and engulfed Addison as his rush came to a screeching halt.

😮  🤔

I know!  AVERT!  AVERT!!!! AVERT!!!!!!!!!

Jake Hollister sighting!  From NYUP article:

Quote

Jacob Hollister makes his first big splash play

It’s been a rough few days for Dawson Knox but he was solid in practice on Saturday. But his new teammate Jacob Hollister made the best play of any tight end on the day. Allen found his old Wyoming teammate as he was streaking across the middle of the field. Hollister laid out for the catch and was able to secure it and tuck it to make the play.

Hollister has missed the past few practices as he’s dealt with a back injury. Now that he’s back the competition is going to heat up at the tight end spot. -Parrino

Also don't count Bam Johnson out of the DE battle (though IMO run D is where the Bills don't trust him)

Quote

Darryl Johnson may have been best edge rusher

Johnson had the engine revving all practice long and put in his best practice of training camp on the defensive line. He was active and his get off seemed quicker. The biggest play he made came early in practice when he blew by Bobby Hart and sacked Mitch Trubisky before he was able to get rid of what would have been nice ball to Jake Kumerow. The whistle blew the play dead but Kumerow had a rare drop if the play would have been allowed to finish. Johnson had another near sack toward the end of practice and just looked to be settling in at d-end. -Parrino

Reserve WRs step up

Tanner Gentry and Duke Williams both had strong practices on Saturday. Gentry appeared to be Jake Fromm’s favorite weapon as he hauled in four receptions from the second year quarterback.

Duke Williams also shined when given opportunities. He finished one Fromm drive with an 11 yard touchdown reception. Near the end of practice, Williams found himself open down the field and hauled in a Davis Webb pass that went for 50-plus yards.

Gentry and Williams face long odds in terms of making the 53-man roster but their performances could help them land a spot on the practice squad. -Talbot

- Haack was really good with practicing punts inside 20 - think that is going to be a very big positive this season.  Then later he bombed one from the back of the EZ to the other 35

- During the kick returners practicing off jugs machine, mckittrick twice lost the ball and it bounced in front of him - then each time gestured to everyone the sun got in my eyes.  The other returners were trying to explain to him how to catch the ball in the sun - put hand over sun etc, finally at the end Hyde also came over to explain it to him.  It is absolutely crazy to me he didn't know how to field a ball in the sun.  Also had a horrible drop on an unbelievable throw Josh made scrambling to his right then fired a rocket back across to the middle of the field - perfect throw prob for TD that he just dropped

- The first time the D came on the field edmunds went around the horn with diff handshakes for everyone a la Josh - not sure if that is a new thing for him now

- if Kumerow doesn't drop that long throw the reporters would have been lobbying to put him on the wall of fame

- Hollister looked pretty dang good for just getting back

- Thought Fromm looked good.  When you look at the roster sheet at the 3rd string olinemen who are in there it is slightly frightening

- When you watch the 2nd and 3rd teams you are reminded how much a fringe WR is dependent on the backup QB actually finding and targeting them

- They prob have been switching back and forth but Moss was with 1st team - had a couple nice plays with catch out of backfield and screen.  Antonio Williams looked good again - hopefully they can get him on practice squad  They prob won't but to me wouldnt be a bad idea to limit his exposure in preseason games

- One note from last week.  We stayed after and were watching a group of LBers who stayed on the field to work the Jugs machine.  One non-LB also was working with them - Wildgoose - and it soon became apparent why.  He was horrible - goose feet for hands

This is actually scary.  Except... practice did start at 10 am, and normally the earliest football games start is 1 pm.  So I dunno.

Hopefully he'll get the next one.

Reporters made it sound like a challenging catch, but if McKenzie wants to take a step he needs to catch the difficult ones.

My understanding is these guys all get so amped up before the games that they don't feel things normally.

At that point in the season, he may also have been taking hefty doses of pain killers for various nagging dings and dangs.

So he maybe felt something (and he said warming up, not stretching) and didn't take it too seriously, but then Monday when the pain killers and adrenaline wore off...ouch city

Makes sense I can't think McDermott would of played him if he'd had a better idea of it.

during the Bills’ scrimmage, Allen completed 14 of his 18 passes and consistently moved the Bills’ offense down the field.

The only blemish from Allen was an interception from Micah Hyde late in the scrimmage. Hyde made a spectacular play on the football on a throw that was slightly off the mark from Allen. Allen ran for a touchdown to cap off the Bills’ first drive and he completed five passes to Stefon Diggs throughout the day. Even without Emmanuel Sanders and Cole Beasley, the first-team offense looked in rhythm throughout the day.

Quote

This was the best evaluation of the running game we’ve been able to get in training camp with game-like situations and live tackling. The backfield was a mixed bag during this practice. Zack Moss had some strong moments working with the first-team offense, including an impressive run through the middle of the defense that looked like a touchdown. He was ultimately ruled down at the one, but Moss cut inside and ran through a few arm tackles. He’s consistently been the best running back at training camp, and he looked better than Devin Singletary on Saturday.

Singletary got quite a few runs with the second-team offense and was stopped near the line of scrimmage too often. It’s one scrimmage, and the blocking in front of him wasn’t stellar, but Singletary has a lot to prove this season. From what we’ve seen, Moss should have a path to a bigger role this season.

The depth running backs took advantage of their opportunities in this scrimmage. Matt Breida continued his strong camp, finding plenty of running room with the third-team offense. He’s a dangerous runner when he can get outside the tackles, and Breida has routinely been making the first defender miss. Meanwhile, Antonio Williams won’t go away. He had a touchdown late in the scrimmage and has shown some chops as a receiver out of the backfield the last few days in camp.

Quote

Offensive line depth could be a problem
We’ve written about how much the Bills miss Dion Dawkins at left tackle. Dawkins is still on the COVID-19/reserve list, and Spencer Brown took the bulk of the reps with the first-team offense. He’s started to show some steady improvement, getting into his pass sets quicker and handling speed off the edge better as a result. There is still a significant gap between he and Dawkins, though.

The Bills also got a look at different right tackles on Saturday. Daryl Williams had a rest day, so Tommy Doyle and Bobby Hart split reps at right tackle. Doyle showed off his strength on a few occasions, including while blocking fellow rookie Greg Rousseau. The other interesting note on the first-team offensive line is that Ike Boettger rotated with Jon Feliciano at left guard. Between Boettger, Feliciano and Cody Ford, the Bills appear to be willing to open the two guard jobs for competition.

Quote

Quintin Morris continues to look the part
It’s a minor note, but depth tight end Quintin Morris has continued to look capable. He caught two passes from Webb toward the end of practice and has gotten some time on special teams as well. He’s behind Dawson Knox, Jacob Hollister and Tommy Sweeney on the depth chart, but Morris looks like a player worth developing.

Quote

Darryl Johnson making some noise on defense
After nine practices, the defensive end battle for roster spots is shaping as the most competitive of the summer. Since the pads have gone on, bubble defensive ends Efe Obada and Darryl Johnson have stacked excellent pass-rushing days one on top of the other. Two days ago, Obada had a dominant practice even though Johnson put together some good reps. On Saturday, the roles were reversed. Johnson had his best practice of training camp, and it couldn’t have come at a better time than during the team’s scrimmage. Working primarily with the second unit, Johnson began the scrimmage by blowing past right tackle Jordan Devey on two consecutive plays for pressures. They were instant wins and merely a sign of more things to come. Later on Johnson got his opponent moving and then worked an inside move against offensive tackle Caleb Benenoch for another pressure. Near the end of the practice, Johnson beat the rookie offensive tackle Tommy Doyle for a speed rush to the outside for his fourth pressure of the day.

No other defensive end was nearly as impactful during the practice.

Quote

Oliver and Zimmer shine while other DTs struggle
It’s getting pretty common at this point, but once again during a training camp practice, defensive tackle Justin Zimmer was one of the more impactful defenders at the line of scrimmage. Zimmer put together a pair of pressures as he worked primarily with the second-team defense, and proved to be one of their more consistent run defenders throughout practice as well. We haven’t written much about Ed Oliver to this point, but he was an excellent run defender when the Bills allowed some tackling late in the practice. Oliver disengaged from a block and filled the rushing lane excellently against Zack Moss to hit the running back in the backfield. Just a few plays later Oliver made another rushing stop at the line of scrimmage by muddying the lane and clogging to the point of his tackle. Even before Saturday, Oliver has also showed some pass-rushing flashes in one-on-one drills, demonstrating that side of his game this summer as well.

If not for Oliver and Zimmer, the defensive tackle group would have been a big letdown Saturday. The Bills gave Star Lotulelei a veteran rest day which elevated Vernon Butler to work with the first-team defense and alongside Oliver. Butler had to leave the practice due to a head injury, but he struggled to clog the lane against rushing attempts before he was injured. Reserve defensive tackles Brandin Bryant and Treyvon Hester also really struggled to hold the point of attack. Harrison Phillips had an up and down day, combining a run-stuffing highlight with other snaps that allowed the rushing game to get a sizeable gain up the middle.

Quote

Basham down on the depth chart?
Speaking of Boogie Basham, we previously mentioned that the shine of his early success had faded a bit, and that was again true during Saturday’s scrimmage. While fellow rookie and defensive end Greg Rousseau worked mostly with the first-team defense, Basham had most of his reps coming against the second and third defensive units. He put together a good outside pass-rushing move on third-string offensive tackle Syrus Tuitele, but Basham didn’t do much else to stand out against the better competition. Considering that the Bills are now almost two weeks into training camp, and well into their padded practices, it’s fair to say that the summer expectations for their rookie defensive ends has flipped.

Rousseau was supposed to have the bigger learning curve as the younger player out of the game for a year, but he’s been excellent while filling in for the injured Jerry Hughes. Early signs show that the Bills might be on to something with Rousseau. As for Basham, his camp is somewhat similar to the one that A.J. Epenesa had as a rookie. They’re getting Basham some work, but mainly against the bubble and bottom of the roster players.

and something you didn't quote in the original article (thank you btw for not quoting the whole thing!  much appreciated!):

Quote

What became apparent as the second and third-team offenses were on the field is that the Bills don’t have a ton of depth on the line. The backup defensive linemen consistently got the better of the backup offensive linemen. Ryan Bates is a mainstay as the team’s backup center and played well throughout practice, but the play from Jordan Devey at tackle left a lot to be desired.

He mentions "There is still a significant gap between he [Brown] and Dawkins, though." Well, when a team has a true Franchise LT, there is gonna be a big drop-off between the starter and a raw rookie.  The rookie is doing enough that Allen had time to complete 14 of 18 passes and IMO that Addison sack was some kind of miscommunication or mix-up in protection calls because Brown took the LB while Moss vacated the backfield and took no one.  Don't think that was how it was supposed to work.

Anyway, the point is, Jordan Devey isn't the backup tackle - if that role doesn't belong to Brown, Doyle, or Hart, it may belong to Bates or Ford - so Devey is 3rd or 4th string at tackle.  And in fact, while Devey has surely taken practice reps at tackle and is big enough to play tackle (6'6", 320), the only playing experience he has is at guard and at center.  Bates and Ford both have more game-reps at tackle than he does.  Truth.

I expect there's probably a reason for that.

OK so anyway, from the stuff you quoted:

If Bam Johnson had a great practice by beating 3rd or 4th string OT Jordan Devey and then another career journeyman who signed with the Bills 3 days ago, well, I'm glad he had a great practice, but pump the brakes a bit I think.

Was thinking same thing.  An unheralded rookie is playing OT so of course it will be a huge drop off.  Reminds me when I played chess against my high school math teacher who was a grandmaster - the purposes is not to beat him (although I did it once surprising him) but to get better with practice.

Bills let go their backup swing OT Ty so they need to be confident that one of the other players can play OT in a pinch.  Assuming they are active and not playing other positions I expect it is Bates as LT and Ford as RT going into game 1 unless someone really shines.  Lots of talk about depth of OL but I have not been impressed - the breadth is good but the depth is not.

Singletary might be a trade candidate in a week or two.

AW is under team control for a little less $ but the same amount of time..........which might not be a total coincidence..........perhaps they envisioned this and didn't want to be in a spot where team control was a deciding factor in the RB decisions.

Wouldn't get much but maybe another team has a blocked or similarly scheme misfit talent that would match up to Beane's liking.

Antonio Williams is a natural scheme fit in outside zone.

As is Moss.

And Breida.

Singletary is not.

I don't like it...........even though everyone knew it was a bad draft for RB's I felt Singletary was the RB1...........and he was excellent in a rush offense catered to his skills............but if switching to OZ continues to streamline the passing game I can live with it if they have players that fit the scheme.    And Moss/Breida/Williams are fits.

While the drink is not directly tied to the football team, the red, white and blue can emblazoned with the image of a quarterback is a clear nod to the Bills and Josh Allen, who grabbed the reins as the team’s franchise quarterback last season while leading the team to the AFC Championship Game.

Basically using Bills and Josh but not paying.

Couple points: the only RB proven to thrive in outsize zone runs is Brieda with the Niners. None of the other guys have from what I’ve seen the speed to get to the edge. Also, the idea that ‘outside zone’ is an offensive philosophy, as opposed to a type of play and oline technique within a zone specific blocking scheme, is misplaced.

Further, not sure what outside zone runs (or inside zone runs for that matter) have to do with ‘streamlining’ the pass game, other than traditionally zone schemes utilize more athletic linemen who often are better pass blockers?
