Punching Bag
My wife came home today and asked me what is going on with gas prices. We had some issues with Texas chill earlier in year which raised prices. Other than for shopping and medical appointments I rarely leave house so while I knew gas prices were going up but not dramatically. She said she could not get off the exit because cars were backed up two lanes to exit and that exit is on other side of light. Apparently issue on East Coast is a ransomware attack on Colonial Pipeline https://www.providencejournal.com/story/news/local/2021/05/10/aaa-pipeline-shutdown-increase-gas-prices/5021253001/ https://www.cnbc.com/2021/05/10/hacking-group-darkside-reportedly-responsible-for-colonial-pipeline-shutdown.html Quote According to Boston-based Cybereason, DarkSide is an organized group of hackers set up along the “ransomware as a service” business model, meaning the DarkSide hackers develop and market ransomware hacking tools, and sell them to other criminals who then carry out attacks. Think of it as the evil twin of a Silicon Valley software start-up. Quote Cybereason reports that DarkSide has a perverse desire to appear ethical, even posting its own code of conduct for its customers telling them who and what targets are acceptable to attack. Also apparently protected are entities based in former Soviet countries. Fair game, then, are all for-profit companies in English speaking countries. PastaJoe
It’s already being resolved. “Colonial Pipeline has initiated a restart of its pipeline operations after a ransomware attack forced one of the nation’s largest oil transporters to shut down, exposing vulnerabilities in America’s infrastructure and sparking gas panic buying across the southeast. Pipeline operations restarted about 5 p.m. ET, the company said in a statement.” https://amp.cnn.com/cnn/business/live-news/us-gas-demand-05-12-21/index.html?__twitter_impression=true Just another example of the need for significant infrastructure upgrades. Punching Bag
Or mask shortage which China knew ahead of time about and its factories were increasing output before known need. Quote Once the pipeline is back online, it will take a while for supply system to return to normal. It takes 15 to 18 days for a gallon of gasoline to flow through the line from Texas to its terminus in Linden, New Jersey, Albert notes. shrader
I couldn't help but laugh as I drove past a couple gas stations here in NC today. These people have probably burned off more gas than they even needed in the first place just idling in those lines forever.

You can fortify a road or bridge and expect it to last some number of years. You can address a cyber-security hole with little expectation that another one won't be exposed in the short term. It's an on-going battle. For the record, if it comes out that the company operating the Colonial pipeline was lax wrt cyber-security I'll agree with you - my hope/expectation is that wasn't the case. My wife is in BFLo the past week helping her mother... She drives back tomorrow. Unfortunately, she's all fueled up for the ride! AND if she tops it really, really off... Can make it the whole 525 miles on one tank. Sure she'll be coming in on fumes... But I have done it before! Dang it! What's the odds she didn't tippy top it off? She's going East to West and I only pulled the one tank feat off on winter blend and a strong West-East tailwind! 😆 I used cruise control too... She's a Luddite and doesn't believe in cruise control... I got that working for me! 😉 GodSpeed Honey! [FWIW... J/K... In no way shape or form am I serious about possibly keeping my freedom and independence because there is a fuel shortage and my wife can't get back home.] Edited May 13, 2021 by ExiledInIllinois
