I can see NFL Sunday Ticket go to Amazon Prime

A couple of weeks ago I was kicking around the idea that Apple might be in a position to buy Sunday Ticket to add to its Apple TV streaming service.
 
Apple is sitting on a mountain of cash. The company, however, tends to buy smaller companies as part of a search for talent and intellectual property.

 

I've also seen a report that suggests Comcast might be in a good position to bid for Sunday Ticket. It could bolster its Peacock streaming service as well as its cable TV business.

 

Another thought is that the NFL might divvy up broadcast rights to Sunday Ticket among several streaming and cable companies to keep anti-trust lawyers at bay. 

In any event, 2022 looks like it's going to be a busy year for the NFL and the broadcast industry:

  • DirecTV’s exclusive deal to carry the NFL Sunday Ticket expires after the 2022 season;
  • The league’s current TV contracts with networks such as ESPN, Fox and CBS are also scheduled to end after the 2022 season.

So things could get interesting, but not soon enough for me.

First off: Great post!

 

I can't see Apple making a play for this, or getting that deep into sports programming. Comcast is a possibility, but if they were get into a bidding war with Amazon, Amazon wins. Plus Amazon would be able to get into more homes right now. Comcast/Xfinity would need to buy smaller cable companies to give it a wider reach (Peacock streaming not withstanding).

Someone help me with this because I don’t like paying Directv all that money every year for Sunday ticket but I live in Mississippi and my internet is satellite not that great for streaming all the time. So my worry is even no I hate paying direct I no I can watch my bills every year on my 65’ tv. So if direct stops what would I do I guess if dish or someone like that got in on the action would be better for everyone

I would rather pay 25$ a game on pay per view then 160$ a month for Directv. With all the ways to watch tv or really movies I would love to just buy a game win it’s not on prime time. But that’s to easy and you better believe the NFL knows that’s. Lol

I never understood why Direct TV just doesn't let anyone get the Ticket, now that streaming is available. They'd make more money that way than forcing people to sign up. If venture there are plenty of people who would pay full price for just the ticket for streamingthan today who works sign up for Direct TV to get it for free.

If they let anyone get Sunday Ticket, without being chained to DirecTV, no one would bother to subscribe to DirecTV.

Their business is selling satellite TV, they wouldn't last long term as just a Sunday Ticket reseller. Although their future looks pretty dim right now as it is -- Starlink is looming.

Last DTV contract was $12B, doubtful Bezos will throw that in as a freebie. There will be an upsell for sure.

But would the additional revenue from those who refuse to subscribe to DIRECTV make up the difference? Assuming a $400 price for non DIRECTV subscribers, that’s around 4-8 months of billing from a basic package subscriber. If you can get 4-8 months, up front, by offering the Sunday ticket as a stand alone, might just work. 
 

I actually think the smartest move would be to tether it to your wireless service. Offer stand alone Sunday ticket to ATT wireless unlimited subscribers only.

You guys know this has been discussed at nauseous every few months four years and years.  Nothing has changed.  Yes, the NFL is trying out the streaming option, but DirectV pays obscene $ for the ticket because they would probably lose 65% of their subscriptions without it.

AT&T continues to try and find a buyer for Directv.  It wouldn’t be a surprise if they just cut their losses.  I was just reading that they lost over 600K Directv customers last Qtr and it was an improvement over prior Qtrs

I loved the option of switching to different audio commentary.  The regular announcers were trash, but the "scouts" commentators were actually really good.  They knew football, talked Xs and Os, and generally brought far more candid insight than what you normally get during any NFL broadcast.  More importantly, though, they were having fun, which made their banter a joy to listen to.  It was like watching the game with a few buddies.

 

If the NFL goes this route, it would be a no-brainer to make home and away radio coverage available as listening options, too.

I always see people wanting “their team only” and assuming they will get some great discount if that is an option.  By and large that is exactly what you pay for with directs.  Out of market fans ARE the Sunday ticket customers.  Yeah you get the other games but how many people watch them?   All the available games are in two time slots so who would pay for a second 1 pm game anyway?   Yes there will probably be changes to how you can watch the bills but it won’t be cheaper.   The other thing is the ticket is more valuable to a secondary performer like directv than say amazon.  Amazon has their customers so they don’t need some lost leader to attract and retain cumstomers  like dtv does.  That is why a lot of people get discounts or free ticket each year.   And the pirate options will always be there too so someone has to subsidize those guys.

I wasn't able to get the 49ers/Cardinals game on Sunday Ticket yesterday so it looks like Amazon took the "exclusive" away from DirecTV for one game. First time I can remember that happening.

Directv is done anyways.  The technology is passed by.  The only holdout was archaic rules set by the current fcc that favor telecom monopolies.

At&t has been trying to squeeze their satellite customers into the overpriced streaming service, and there are too many better and cheaper options.

either a game by game purchase 

or 

sign up for the whole season at a discount

or 

buy the entire leagues slate of games

Could see Amazon picking it but but not Prime only in that you're talking about a package that was costing $300 to $400 full price, now to include that in Prime membership for $130 a year.  I'd be thrilled if they did as currently have Prime, but can't see it being part of Prime.  On the other hand with all the illegal but readily available free streams, can't see people spending much with Amazon for it either.  Maybe $100 Bills package only, or $200 for the entire package could sell it.   A friend has told me the quality of the illegal streams has got quite good too with few if any interruptions.

I think Amazon would consider having it as part of Prime Video but at an extra cost. I can't see Amazon making the money off of it needed to justify the huge money. 112 million Americans have Amazon Prime, so how many more would go buy Amazon Prime for 130 dollars a year or so just for the NFL? I would imagine some would but the NFL Sunday Ticket contract currently costs about 1.5 billion a year, I currently think that in 2023 when that deal expires it would likely cost Amazon 2 billion a year to get that contract. That would mean that Amazon would likely need to add 14-20 million more Prime subscribers (depending on if they subscribe all year or just for football season) to make the economics work. And with 112 million Americans 

 

I think Amazon would probably charge less money than Direct TV as they would likely treat the product as a loss leader to get more people into their ecosystem. But I still think they would need to have a 150 dollar charge for it on top of the Amazon service fee. I would be mighty tempted to sign up for it as I already have Prime from my job so to pay about 10 dollars a game to watch the Bills and get the rest of the NFL is solid value.
