Buffalo Sabres & NHL 2020-2021

That went about as I expected. It looked like a bunch of guys who haven’t played hockey in a long time. Rusty, sloppy, out of sync, timing off, guys getting tired quick...

Despite the piss poor d zone play and big mistakes the Sabres were still in it right till the end. It took Eichel quite a while to get going too. He looked super rusty. Lots of guys did.

I’m anxious to see how they look tomorrow night. Let’s hope they shook off some of the rust tonight and come out looking more ready to play. I think we can compete with this Washington team. I totally forgot they hired Peter Laviolette though. That sucks. Why couldn’t they have stuck with Todd Rierden for 1 more season? 😂

Having Thompson on a line with Eichel is a pointless waste.

Tage belongs in Rochester.

It was disheartening to see that Eichel took the night off tonight, after 10 months of not playing hockey.

Hall looked good; he'll be gone after this year so enjoy him while he's here.

I disagree. Nobody took a night off. They were rusty from not playing for 10 months. Washington didn't look much better. It's going a bit for them to gel. Especially with not having any preseason games.

It was the first game back with no preseason. I'm expecting a better game tonight with Ullmark in net. I'm guessing you didn't even watch the game.

It was the first game back with no preseason for both teams.

I watched. Washington was better.

Don’t want to overreact to one bad game, but they didn’t look good. Washington also looked sloppy and still probably should have had a couple more goals.

Don’t really understand the strategy with Skinner or Tage. Hutton let in one softie, but for the most part he wasn’t getting much help in front of him.

But fret not, Eichel and Staals hair was looking great...

Im guessing that you’re wrong a lot. I watched the first 2 periods. But thank you for updating me with things that everyone already knows

Rambling thoughts on last nights game:

Hall was the best player on the ice in blue.  He was all over the place making things happen.  He and Olofsson show some real chemistry with the PP and extra attacker.  Despite his efforts, top line really struggled to get much of anything going until the 3rd when the Caps were hanging back and defending the lead.

Staal line was the only line to generate some sustained pressure in the offensive zone through the first two periods but generated only one or two scoring chances from it.

Defensive breakdowns were the story of the game in my opinion.  Montour went fishing on the first goal and let his man go through free for a 2 on 1 ten feet from the net.  Oshie had a free path to the crease on the PP goal.  Carlson basically has a breakaway after a turnover in the neutral zone.  Then there is Staal's gift to Vrana.  Dahlin plus a bouncing puck = scoring opportunity.  Tough to blame Hutton.  Maybe the wrist shot from the blue line which had eyes through the traffic and the rebound that was left for Oshie?

I like Rieder's energy.  At least let Skinner play with Rieder.  I don't think Cozens is ready for the NHL.

I'm surprise some of you were not happy with Thompson last night. I thought he looked way better than the last time we saw him in Buffalo.

I take it will be Ullmark tonight. Hopefully he plays well.

i still dont understand reinharts roll on the ice. how has he stayed on this team for the past couple seasons doesnt make sense. his ceiling is the second line, but he can never play up to that standard, and he doesnt fit on the third line. hes ok on the powerplay, but hes below average in general. he reflects what this team has been the past several years.

They played a good game but just couldn’t get it done. I thought they played better than the caps for large stretches.

Ullmark didn’t play bad or anything but Goaltending was the difference tonight. Their goalie was better than ours. I hope that isn’t a common theme again this year.

Aggravating to start the season with 2 straight losses. They have to get a win next game. The season is too short to lose bunches of games in a row. No time to make it up.
It is January though. Maybe I should’ve expected the losses? 😂

We have ***** goaltenders period... this is going to be a long season, until I lose interest once again. Go Bills!

I thought they played a good game. It's going to take a bit to get into game shape. They had no preseason its like that for every team. Adding a bunch of new players it will take some time to get adjusted.

It's unfortunate so many of you are so quick to dump on them.

I just can’t get back into this team...I personally feel Jack isn’t the team leader that fans can get behind like josh allen...I have zero evidence to support this just kinda how I feel.. the team is so boring...the hockey is uninteresting and uninspiring....I gave it two games but it is not at all exciting...not sure if I lost my love for hockey....I guess many years of losing will do this. In a shortened season, getting 0 points in 2 games begins the hole that will be impossible to dig out of.

I hear ya. my wife asked me the other day about the Sabres and my fandom. i used to be a huge hockey fan.  I told her, put it this way.. the last time the Sabres were in the playoff my twins were in first grade.  Now they are 16 and learning to drive.

it’s a disgrace to be down that long.

I will hold out hope that they surprise me this season, but not looking good early.

Hockey has always been my #1 sport. I played for more than 1/2 my life. I almost never miss a Sabres game. Even during the tank years I watched every game.

But yeah, this team is stealing my love for the game and I find myself losing interest more and more each season. I missed hockey so much and I’m already getting depressed about the Sabres. I keep telling myself that they haven’t played in 300+ days. They’re rusty. There are 7 new guys in the lineup. Give them a chance, yada yada. But it’s hard not to immediately get flashbacks of all the losing of previous seasons and feel down in the dumps about the Sabres.

All of the losing and incompetence had really taken its toll on me.
