"Proud Mary" - Tina Turner  (The story goes, Tina and Ike were stoned out of their skulls and wrote this song. It may not be obvious, but it's all about rolling on the river of marijuana.)

You know, every now and then
I think you might like to hear something from us
Nice and easy
But there's just one thing
You see we never ever do nothing
Nice, easy
We always do it nice and rough
So we're gonna take the beginning of this song
And do it easy
But then we're gonna do the finish rough
This is the way we do "Proud Mary"
And we're rolling, rolling, rolling on the river
Listen to the story
I left a good job in the city
Working for the man every night and day
And I never lost one minute of sleeping
I was worrying 'bout the way the things might've been
You know that big wheel keep on turning
Proud Mary keep on burning
And we're rolling, rolling, rolling yeah
Rolling on the river (the river)
Cleaned a lot of plates in Memphis  (munchies)
Pumped a lot of tane down in New Orleans
But I never saw the good side of the city
Until I hitched a ride on a riverboat queen
You know that big wheel keep on turning
Proud Mary keep on burning
And we're rolling, rolling, rolling yeah (rolling)
Rolling on the river
Say we're rolling (rolling) rolling yeah
Rolling on the river
The river
Oh I left a good job in the city
Working for the man every night and day
And I never lost one minute of sleeping
Worrying about the way the things might've been
Big wheel keep on turning
Proud Mary keep on burning
Rolling, rolling, rolling on the river
Say we're rolling, rolling, rolling on the river
Oh I cleaned a lot of plates in Memphis
And I pumped a lot of tane down in New Orleans
But I never saw the good side of the city
Until I hitched a ride on a riverboat queen
Big wheel keep on turning
Proud Mary keep on burning
And we're rolling, tell you rolling, we're rolling on the river
I tell you we're rolling, rolling, rolling on the river
If you come down to the river
I bet you gonna find some people who live
And you don't have to worry if you got no money
People on the river are happy to give (People in vans down by the river)
Big wheel keep on turning
Proud Mary keep on burning
And we're rolling, tell you rolling, we're rolling on the river
Tell you we have no time (rolling, rolling, rolling on the river)
(Rolling, rolling, rolling on the river)
Rolling, rolling, rolling on the river)
Tell you we're rolling, rolling, rolling on the river
I tell you we're rolling, rolling, rolling on the river)

This.

The song was written by Jon Fogerty several years before Ike and Tina recorded it.  I saw an interview of Fogerty with Dan Rather where he talks about writing the song.  If you get cable, look for the AXS channel, as they replay interviews.  It is channel 299 on Spectrum in Syracuse.

Here is a link that is also interesting.  It explains Ike and TIna's take on the song.

If the main line was "One Josh Allen pass, over the line,"  the song would have lost its reefer connection and wouldn't have changed any of the meaning.

Bob Marley's version of the "munchies" & late-night snack attack:

"Said, said, said, I remember when-a we used to sit
In the government yard in Trenchtown
And then Georgie would make the fire lights, I seh
A log wood burnin' through the night
Then we would cook cornmeal porridge, I seh
Of which I'll share with you
My feet is my only carriage
And so I've got to push on through
But while I'm gone..."

The Fugees cover version, Jersey Style:

"Say say say
I remember when we used to rock in a project yard in Jersey
And little Georgie would make the firelight
As stolen cars passed through the night
And then we'd hit the corner store for roots, paper, and brew
My drink's my only remedy
For pain of losing family, but while I'm gone shorty
Everything's gonna be alright, everything's gonna be alright
Fugees come to the dance tonight, everything's gonna be alright
Everything's gonna be alright
Everything's gonna be alright
The gun man's in the house tonight
But everything's gonna be alright..."

Did @DC Tom reference this anthem yet:

Thread getting too long to check:

Here’s an entire comedy album about weed. At one time I thought it was funny, but as I listen to it today, I think maybe not.

Still funny...

I guess Mary Jane makes a cameo in this song:

I hate country twang .....  at least give us a time stamp.

to soothe EII's broken heart

I can stomach a few songs and or artists.
