Veteran QB: It all comes down to FOLES / MCCARRON!

Recommended Posts

Nope.  If the Bills are trading into the top 5, say pick 3.  Forget Foles, McCarron.  The latter is still young enough to play for 10 years.  The former has too much demand from the Eagles surrounding him.  So why waste the cap space on them?  Just get a vet that can serve as a mentor and understand that he's not going to be starting long, if at all.

Teams with open QB positions are drying up. I would offer 1 yr deals to both McCarron or McCown telling them they would have a chance to win the starting job in training camp. McCarron gets a shot to set himself up for a big pay day if he plays well either from the Bills or another team. This allows us to not rush a rookie QB out on the field too soon.

Who cares about rushing the rookie on the field at this point?

Unless it's Jackson or Allen, let Mayfield/Darnold/Rosen start day 1 and take their lumps.  It's what QBs do nowadays.  KC last year was an anomaly. High 1st round rookie QBs don't need this time on the bench anymore and we can use the money we save from not spending a lot of money on McCown or McCarron on other positions like OL to strengthen the team and surround our young QB with more talent to succeed.

Very happy the Bills didn't reach for Keenum/Bridgewater/Bradford/Cousins... if we're trading up to get a QB stud, all we need is a bridge like McCarron or McCown or even Moore. I like what they're doing.

Remember, if any of these so-called great FAs out there were actually great, they wouldn't be available!

It’s not so much that they’re great, it’s that they are the bridge QBs best able to keep you competitive while your star rookie bakes until ready.

Yeah, but I don't think we should be paying $16M a year for a bridge.

Why is everyone so obsessed over a bridge QB who may never even play a snap as a starter for the Bills?

I mean who cares...might as well just let Nate Pickerman go out there until the rookie is ready, assuming the rookie didn't just win the job outright in preseason.  The bridge guy is completely meaningless...all that matters is our rookie.

Anyone in tier 3 is fine...in fact, the cheaper the better.  Why tie up cap space with a pricey backup...just get some guy in here to battle our rookie and NP to start week 1.  Odds are the rookie will win the job anyway, and if not just start JAG QB or NP a short period until the rook takes over.

The thing with Foles - I think his trade value is diminished.  Maybe that "more than a 1st & a 4th" stance has softened up.

Maybe you go with McCarron & a rookie + Peterman if Foles is still requiring too much draft capital.

The trouble with the draft right now is you still have to package a lot to get one of those big names I think...  I suspect the Bills will be waiting to pull the trigger on a trade up.  I bet they have 1a and 1b on their board - if one of them go, they start really making a push - but it'll be a dog fight I think, albeit one where we have the most draft capital in 2018 to do it.

I understand that feeling, but it's what the market will bear at the present time. With the rookie wage scale and what star QB draft picks command, it's still commensurate with what a mediocre starting and decent backup make, anyway.

I am trying to figure out why we wouldnt want McNown.....

- Its short term

- he is not gonna get this crazy money

- he played well till his injury last year

How about, he's not very good and we're trying to win.

I kind of agree. I'm fine with Peterman going in as the starter next year.

No we're not. Beane and Mac have made it clear that they are building a long-term team. Next year will most likely not be a playoff year. I mean, if everything breaks right for the Bills, and their rookie QB is good right away - and we get a No. 1 WR - and we get a play-making ILB - whew - then MAYBE we can make the playoffs.

With the shortage of quality QB play in the NFL, even if you have a sore knee "franchise QB" in Wentz on IR, why would any team dump a Super Bowl MVP QB for peanuts?  They can certainly trim the salary cap elsewhere.

Everything I hear Coach McDermott say it's we're rebuilding AND trying to win at the same time.  Worked last year.  I expect more of the same this year.  I think this dream of trotting out some schmuck next year with no expectations of winning is a pipe dream.  Coach McDermott don't play that way ore at least hasn't so far.  The past is the greatest predictor of the future.

Of course they're going to TRY to win. They're not tanking. But last year was a miracle. The Bills were not really a playoff team. So many things had to break there way for it to happen the way it did. They were not very good.

Nothing wrong with building long-term and trying to win, too...just don't expect the same miracles next year.

It would seem to me that the Bills were not a serious player in the FA QB market.  Putting all their eggs in one basket.  The  QB they covet in the draft.

am still holding out hope for a Foles trade. trade makes too much sense for philly to pass on getting a high draft pick and relieve cap concerns

Why is there always a yeah butt with yall?  We made the playoffs.  It''s what playoff teams do.  Deal with it.  Hopefully we will again in 2018.

I think you got your tier 3 and tier 2 mixed a bit.

At least, I don't see why AJ McCarron is considered a better prospect than Chase Daniel.

And while he may be persona non grata, Kaepernick has certainly shown more as a QB than the likes of Geno Smith and Tom Savage.

McCown is off the table.

If Beane is true to his earlier word and wants a vet, interesting to see who he's going to try to tap.

Badlands Meanie and his Derek Anderson suggestion may not be the fool some thought, if the plan is truly to go for a rookie that can start right away.

There should not be any more bidders for Foles (if there even was any to begin with). Eagles are in a bit of cap hell. They need to dump salary. If their demands are too high, they keep Foles and have to cut other areas where they may not want. They'd probably have to come down in their demands to relieve some pressure...if Foles, is in fact, in play.

I agree we can get him for less than 8 Million for this year. EGles need to move him in the next 22 hours as they need their house in order by 4PM tomorrow. A second this year and a 4th next year should do the trick. We would then have a solid QB for this season. If this happened I would take the best player available at 12 & 22 in the draft. I would take the QB from Western Kentucky with pick 65 if we don’t draft one earlier. With 12 we would be able to get Vea, Smith, Ward, or possibly Allen , Mayfield or Jackson. If Foles plays well next year we can extend him if we wish. I obviously feel Foles is a solid Top 10 QB. He has displayed that at times as recently as last year. I know I am in the vast minority here.

Anyone wishing the FO had held off on trading Tyrod for a few more days?

so...maybe foles and mayfield gives us a kinda brady/jimmy g situation.  i'll take it. good investment

I think using a high draft/ big money to guys who have never had success  outside of Philly and Alabama seems like a great idea.

draft a guy and sign a cheap vet.

oh you were serious? You want me to answer "does a team have to MAKE THE PLAYOFFS AND pass the domdab99 test to realy be a playoff team?"

I just figured you were playing semantics. Yes, they made the playoffs. So, technically, the Bills are "a playoff team." I know that. So does everyone else. However, we also all know that the Bills team last year was mediocre at best, and we only made the playoffs because the Colts coach made worse decisions than Mac did, and because Andy Dalton decided to pretend to be an elite QB for one play.

So, while I'd love for them to make the playoffs again, I'd much rather them build a strong foundation for a team that becomes a perennial Super Bowl contender, like the Pats, Steelers, Packers, Seahawks, etc.

Does that answer your question?
