Like every year, some teams will select players to fill a major need. Others will make questionable decisions that could possibly set their franchise back a few years. Drafting the right player can be tricky at times, but every team in the NFL has managed to get it right at least once. Yes, even the Cleveland Browns. I'm in the 'Cordy Glenn' camp myself. Great value in the 2nd round, and a nice 'smokescreen' put up before the draft to get him. Buddy did good on that one. Glenn and Darby make some sense, but second round players project into starters far more often than 4th round players. Hitting on a reliable starter in rounds 1-2 isn't that difficulty given the consensus scouting information that is available, its harder in round 3, depending on the draft, but once you get to round 4 its much harder, by far, which is why draft grades are all over the board in later rounds. Simply put, Watkins, Darby, and Glenn are all picks that a lot of amateurs could have made (I'm an amateur and I would have picked Watkins at 3). Bradham at 4 is what separates professionals from amateur draft - nicks - and loud mouthed "draft experts". Everyone always says we gave up "soooo" much, but then you actually take 10 seconds and an ounce of effort to realize the next years first round draft class was steaming garbage from where we would have drafted. In addition, our second round pick turned out better than 95% of the first round picks from that year. That was a phenomenal move and showed great foresight; I know how unpopular it is to say that around here, however. I guess Watkins is our best pick talent wise, but giving up a 1st to get him and all his injuries makes Whaley's first move as GM in the draft possibly the worst thus far. There is no substitute for Watkins ability. 1. Watkins 2. Gilmore 3. Glenn 4. Darby 5. What would have been smart, is to stay put and take Odell Beckham Jr., who has been a better player than Watkins. Or to trade down and take someone like Kelvin Benjamin. Even if you account for the trade up (which hasn't been worth the price so far, considering Watkins injury history), I think most would admit that Khalil Mack would have been a smarter choice. I agree with those that say Cordy Glenn was probably our smartest pick. Not only did we get a very good starting Left Tackle in the middle of the 2nd Round, but Glenn has been better than any of the tackles drafted ahead of him. Almost every analyst I read thought that Glenn was destined to be a Guard or Right Tackle. Most figured he wouldn't make it on the left. The Bills believed they knew better, and they were. Kiko Alonso was also a good pick. But one of the main reasons his draft stock dropped was because of injuries. And the Bills lost Alonso for his entire sophomore season, before shipping him off to the Eagles. Injuries are the main reason that Alonso has failed to live up to his potential. If the Bills hadn't traded him for Shady and he had stayed on the roster, I think most fans would be considering the guy a disappointment at this stage of his career.
