RevWarRifleman
This may have been done before, don't know. But... For me, Platoon. Although I didn't serve in Vietnam, I did served (1968-72) during the war, in the Air Force. There's many things in the movie that strikes a chord with me. Some of the terms they used were the same ones we used in the barracks & other places. Referring to the US as "the world", boo koo as lots of something and so on. The partying scene in the bunker was very much like I experienced. You had the "juicers" in one area, and the "pot heads" in other parts of the barracks. Thus, the music played in each place was decidedly different too. That scene where those guys partied to Smokey Robinson & the Miracles, I was one of those guys. Several of my high school classmates went over & fought. One buddy in my art class in hs was in Bravo company. All these years later, I look at that in an entirely different light. American Sniper from a few years ago runs a good second place.

Augie
Do "M.A.S.H" and "Good Morning, Vietnam" count? If not "Troy". Yesterday I found a cable channel that had MASH back to back for hours and hours. When I was in college it was on as many as 5 times a day, and we'd watch them all. No wonder I didn't graduate early with honors.....but I did eventually escape.

bbb
Saving Private Ryan will always be my favorite movie, I'm quite sure. I saw Black Hawk Down finally - recently - and liked it for awhile, and then was like holy crap, it's just non stop shooting and action, once it starts. I need more than just that. Corp000085
Blackhawk down. "This is mine" The Deer Hunter, a close second Saving Private Ryan and Full Metal Jacket are my two favorites; however, I loved to watch Black Hawk Down... Till I started to work with the widow of one of the KIA. I've had zero urge to see it again till I show my son and then tell her about our connection. Acantha
The quintessential war movie, my favorite all times war movie is Apocalypse Now. I end up watching that movie every couple years or so and I like it more every time I see it. Hated the first time. While I don't think it's really in line with the idea of the thread, I recently watched The Imitation Game and thought it was really good, so I'll throw that out. Augie
Maybe I missed, but with all the names thrown out, I'm surprised Patton hasn't popped up. LONG movie from my childhood. I remember the day we went tot he theater to see it. Not Ben Hurr with an intermission, but it seemed long, good, but long...... The winter scenes were so bleak. DC Tom
A Bridge Too Far: Good movie, reasonably historically accurate, and an amazing cast - a slew of Oscar winners and nominees on it (Gene Hackman, Elliot Gould, James Caan, Robert Redford, Michael Caine, Anthony Hopkins, Lawrence Olivier, Sean Connery, Maximillian Schell, Liv Ullman, Ryan O'Neill). Das Boot: A bit slow at times, but is is as realistic a portrayal of submarine warfare in World War 2 that you will ever see. Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World. Again, as realistic a portrayal of warfare in the Age of Sail as you will ever see. We Were Soldiers: Any war movie that gave veterans flashbacks must be pretty realistic. And one not often considered: Twelve O'Clock High. One of the first movies to show the psychological effects of warfare and PTSD, and still one of the best portrayals of it. Last I checked it was on Netflix; If you haven't seen it, you should. And my nomination for the worst: Pearl Harbor. Michael Bay takes unrealism to a whole new extreme. If you want to watch an accurate portrayal of Pearl Harbor, watch Tora, Tora, Tora. Or From Here to Eternity. Or 1941. Or The Final Countdown. Or Finding Nemo. Anything but that god-awful movie. Oh, and Objective Burma Zulu Dawn Battle L.A. The Beast Aliens War of theWorlds (the original) !@#$ you. That's not a war movie. It's a science-fiction movie. And a travesty. So just !@#$ you.
