Sammy Watkins Has a Broken Foot; Ready for Camp?

Recommended Posts

@MikeGarafolo

On Sammy Watkins' foot surgery (reported by @TyDunne): He played thru stress fractures last year, surgery done a few weeks ago.

Watkins' surgery to insert a screw was performed by Robert Anderson. Expected recovery time is 6-8 weeks. Hope is he's a go for camp.

So, if it was done a few weeks ago, that puts him at 3-5 weeks out. TC would seem like a sure thing given that timeframe.

As @TyDunne reported, Sammy Watkins had what's been referred to as "a small stress fracture." Expected to be 100 percent for start of camp.

In don't buy it. Given the obvious ineptitude of our medical staff, they don't know what a small stress fracture is. This is all on Whaley.

@TyDunne

Some more bad news for the #Bills this Monday. Multiple team sources tell me that wide receiver Sammy Watkins has broken his foot.

So in the Ty Dunne article, it says this happened a month ago. That's actually good news, since the time table for returning from this kind of fracture is 8-12 weeks. So if it happened a month ago, Sammy could be back by training camp though they'll probably bring him on slowly. (This could explain why he wasn't in any hurry to show up for voluntary OTA though)

What I'm more upset with is the Shaq Lawson shoulder thing. Schefter is FOS per Lawson and the Bills medical staff 100% cleared him per Whaley. Now he needs surgery? With hindsight, poor medical choices might be involved in the Cyrus Kouandijo thing since the reason he fell in the draft was supposed to be bad knees, but the Bills medical staff cleared him. Bad knees can make a guy into a waist-bender and cause other technical problems.

WTF, do the Bills need to overhaul their medical staff the way they cleaned house on the scouting staff a few years back?

This entire team is glass.

Gilmore goes out for the season on a simple shoulder tackle. Taylor, Watkins, McCoy, pretty much questionable every single game. Kyle Williams every year. Now Swaq Lawson.

There's a quote about guys who get hurt a lot... something to the effect that if you're always getting hurt, you're not good enough to be playing in the NFL. It's not bad luck, it's that you're not a good enough athlete to avoid getting injured.

Hot Take Alert!!! No other NFL teams have players that get injured. :lol:

That's what they all say about Sammy. He's not a very good athlete. :lol:

The last bit is interesting. I remember when the bills under Jauron fielded an untalented bend but don't break defense that was frequently bulldozed and also annihilated by injuries.

I started to think it was symptomatic at the team level of guys being lower on the talent scale and thus having to really push hard to compete at the NFL level, causing more propensity to get hurt.

Could be something to that... Sammy though has nothing close to a talent deficit, so it's certainly not a universal law even if it's somewhat true en mass.

Goodwin is an olympic level athlete, just doesn't have the musculoskeletal talent to withstand NFL punishment. I'm afraid Watkins' issues are following a similar trend.

He's only started every game in 50% of the seasons he's played. It's literally a coin flip if he'll play every game this year.

He'll be able to play, but don't be surprised if it affects him in some way (explosiveness, etc.).

A foot for a WR is always a concern. Dez came back, wasn't the same and had another procedure. Edelman came back and just went for his second procedure and is now in a walking boot. Julio Jones had a bunch of complications before he came back. Durant had 3 surgeries on his broken foot. One good thing here is the same surgeon that worked with Julio is now working with Sammy, hopefully that helps. Biggest thing is he needs to rest and let it heal fully, heck stay out until Sept. don't rush back.

My gut says this is bad.

Sammy is precious porcelain.. They're underplaying it, foot injuries are notoriously finicky... and metal screws get cold in the winter.

I expect McCoy and Sammy to limit themselves all preseason, claiming tightness, injuries, etc... but this isn't that.
