I've never seen a team in my life go through more defensive lineman without finding a consistent pass rusher. Hopefully Bosa can fill that role and stay healthy all year, which is a big ask.

It’s so true. Would love to see a guy come in and have a Bryce paup type impact and a Ted Washington type on the interior.

You can't blitz the great QBs repeatedly. They kill you more often than not.  You need to sprinkle them in like Spags did to Josh on the final play last year.

McD actually does send linebackers, corners, and safeties not too infrequently.  The problem is partially the scheme but let's face it it has mostly been the players.

Rousseau is at best solid but inconsistent. Did he make a single play in the AFC Championship game? Miller and AJE were terrible. Beane has crapped the bed repeatedly on DL in the draft and FA. Nothing is going to change. Just have to hope Bosa can stay healthy, maybe the PED cheat contributes down the stretch, and either of them are better than Miller was. And hope one of the rookies can make a difference.

Agree with everything you said. But damn if they could just improve on that stupid 3rd and long defense giving up first downs all the time. It’s beyond infuriating. Unacceptable and inexcusable.

Based on their coaching hires, I would guess that not only will they run more stunts but they will also blitz a BIT more....enough to make teams concerned they are coming.  Then they'll line 5 or 6 at the line of scrimmage to make teams concerned they will blitz and change up which four rush...which makes rushing four much more effective.

Obviously, we didn’t disrupt Wilson doing it vanilla. But even with various stunts, it’s not going to get home. Will we blitz this year?

What is this stunt you speak of?  I haven't seen one in years out of the Bills.

We don’t have the pass rushing talent to dominate anyone but it feels like we probably have the depth to actually pull off McD’s philosophy of rushing in waves, especially if we can get something out of guys like Sanders this year.

Being that this is the first preseason game, and preseason isn’t what it used to be, no real conclusions can be made about first team readiness, being that real game dynamics were not in play, ie; Allen did not take part, which directly effects how teams will play us, so it’s cocktail time 😁🍸🚬

lot of value doing vanilla in preseason games IMO

100% this.  I honestly believe if we could cover this line will put up some good sack numbers.  Am I wrong in thinking our coverage used to be better?  I'm not sure if we gambled more and played less soft coverage.  I feel like we blitzed a db more often.  Maybe our DC's just aren't good at timing or are too predictable.  Whatever the case you are absolutely right.  They call the right play against our 3rd down defense all the time.  We're either too soft and an easy catch and run or some type of screen or a jump ball for a big gain we just couldn't knock to the ground.

Before Poyer and Hyde started to break down, and before Tre blew out his knee Thanksgiving in NOLA, combined with Johnson, they used to be the strength of the defense.

I think prime Poyer and Hyde hid a lot of defencies of the rest of the back field and then a healthy tre locked down one side for the most part.  since then

the talent drop off has been to much to bridge.    less than adequate schemes have had to try and cover for lack of talent.  works for the most part against

lesser qbs but better teams see right through it.

That’s not clear to me at all.

I think we are going to be much more exotic with 5 man pressures and simulation pressure based on the coaches they brought in and comments from players, but I came out of that game thinking any Front 4 combination of Bosa, Rousseau, Hoecht, Oliver, Sanders and Walker is going to be tough for opponents to deal with on passing downs.

While I tend/want to believe this is true, I don’t have a lot of confidence. Groot and Oliver are low sack guys, Sanders and Walker are rookies, Hoecht is sitting out six guys and Bosa has struggled staying healthy. Here’s hoping the DL is a strength this year!

Yea, I’m not thinking any of these guys are going to be Chris Jones or Micah Parsons this year, but I do think the addition of Sanders, Walker, Hoecht and Bosa drastically increases the talent & potential around Oliver and Rousseau.

That increase in surrounding talent has me hoping Rousseau and Oliver can take another step when they’re not the only guys the other team is worried about on passing downs.
