I think Elam will do okay in Dallas. He is has an aggressive play style and that didn’t fit right with our philosophy. He will get some PI penalties for being too handsy, he will over commit on coverage, but he will also track the ball and get a good amount of interceptions. His stats will look pretty good on paper.

Yep, Dallas is cool with that.  Look at the Diggs there.  Dudes been pretty boom or bust and they love him there.  He may give up some long TD's breaking on a route, but he also picks those off at a high clip too.  Hope we see Hairston gets encouraged to play like that.  A long TD isnt the end of the world with our offense (obv you hope a safety catches him)....  but an extra possession for us is often a back breaker.  I forget the coordinator we brought in (from NE I think), but sounds like we may lean into a more aggressive defense this year with more m2m!

Coleman day 1 TC was practice.  But day 2 wasnt!  Lets wait to find out what he's doing today 😆

I’m not saying he’ll be all pro, but wouldn’t shock me in the least if he turned out to be a good starter for them. Confidence is huge in sports, and I feel like he struggled with that here. Fresh start will be good for him, but, from an outsider’s perspective, I was never thrilled with how they appeared to handle Elam here.

He always has a knack for making plays, he just couldn't find consistency down to down.

I agree. I didn't think he was nearly as bad as others thought he was. He had some good games and made some good plays.

He lacked some consistency but he also didn't always get a lot of snaps either.

This is one gripe I have with the staff, players need to sometimes fit this specific role so rigidly that even talented players struggle if not perfect for it Ford, Spain, and McGovern come to mind.

But on the other hand we got production from guys like Dane Jackson and Levi Wallace so there is some give and take.

All the CB's around the league get beat.  Some have a rep, so the QB's tend to stay away from them if possible.  Some make some big plays every once in a while to balance out getting roasted.  Elam needs some confidence and to not get the quick hook whenever he gets beat.  Maybe things will work out in big D.

Get real.  A #23 pick can't be a "colossal bust".

I’m sorry. I’m failing to understand your logic.

Any first round pick who fails to become a starter by their second year is a colossal bust. This dude’s got three years behind him and he’s barely backup material, let alone starting.

That is absolutely a colossal bust.

Elam will be a probowler this season.

But I believe hes the only Bills CB ever to intercept Mahommes once in the regular season and intercept the Dolphins in the playoffs

But that wasn't good enough for McDermott because Elam didn't fit in with McDermotts soft zone cerebral unathletic scheme

This is excellent satire. Fit for The Onion. So well done that people thought you were serious.

Respect.

Elam's problem on the game field was always from the neck up, not his undeniable physical talent.  I wish him nothing but the best, hopefully Dallas's scheme can minimize his shortcomings.

He sucks.

He was Beane’s “Maybin.”

Horrible pick.  Colossal bust.

EDIT:  I don’t blame Elam and I don’t think he failed due to lack of effort.  Similarly to Maybin, he was overdrafted. Not his fault. I do wish him well, but I don’t think a change in scenery is going to elevate his level of talent.

That's a lame justification. Where was the appropriate spot for Maybin to be drafted? The 7th round?

If we don't draft him, he absolutely goes in the next 10 picks, just like most "drafted too high" players. Most draft boards are pretty close. It wasn't some insane reach that the jags or raiders are known for.

I don't think Elam or Maybin were considered massive reaches at the time. McCargo was considered a massive reach at the time for example. He was drafted in the late 1st and many pundits and evaluators had him as a early to mid 3rd round talent. Elam was considered by most to be a firm top 30ish talent in the draft at a decently valued position. He went 24th that's right in that range. Maybin was considered a late 1st rounder very early 2nd rounder early in the process and then roster up into the "mid-1st" range in the evaluation process. Maybin was drafted 10th not that far off from a mid-1st round position.

I didn't like the Elam pick at the time because I thought he might not be a scheme fit and I thought go offensive line protect Josh but let's not pretend it was a McCargo level reach either.

Look, man, I’m not busting anyone’s balls for the making the pick.

The fact is that it was a horrible pick.

And so was Elam.

It happens. All the time.

I can opine that a player was a horrible pick (which I did) and still not criticize the GM (I did not).

Luv ya! 😘

God love Iverson for that sound bite.

on the serious side, I agree with you Simon.  We’ll see how he plays during games this year against Philly and the Redskins.
