Regardless how much it's attempted. It's a cool element to the game for coaches to have in their tool box. A 45% success rate is pretty good.

Doesn’t move the needle for me, but to each his own.

Maybe I’m boring here but I wish the kickoff just got left alone. I don’t want it out of the game. I wish they’d go back to what it was even. If the alternative is no kick at all then fine..this will have to do. But I still want to see kick off returns starting a game. That’s football to me. Even if it’s a touchback

Look for injuries galore with this new rule. It makes you wonder the mentality of a kick returner in this new iteration of the NFL. No more fair catches, the old onside kick rules. Safety has been put on the back burner.

Can you imagine being the kicker, the last line of defense, attempting a tackle on a returner that is now coming down the field full speed?

Just kick it out of the end zone and forget about it.

If you want to lose your job... You think special teams coaches will be asking you to concede the 30 yard line every kickoff?

The percentage of points scored at a drive start at the 30 compared to the 20 is literally like 10% or more..

Throughout the course of a season that's a big swing

I certainly know why the bills like to put it high and try to pin them inside the 20

According to many, the new return setup supports a RB returner much more than an explosive WR who’s used to operating in space. It’s more of a stretch run play where they have to read and choose the correct hole than make a guy miss. A fully healthy Hines would flourish with something like that, but he probably has one more season before he’s all the way back.

The 76% touchback percentage or whatever it was had to go. It was essentially a dead play, not exciting at all. Moving the ball back to the 30 and returning the ball with 5 man blocking wedges was never coming back, so I’m happy they found some other way to keep it in the game. We’ll see at the end of the season if it’s a relevant play and has any bearings on the games.

So WRT the 13 second KC kickoff return, will squib kicks no longer be attempted since the ball first must touch the ground in the "landing zone"  Also a good chance may kick the ball into one of the teams own players who'd have their back to the kicker??

Squib as we know it is dead

Seems like Samuel would be a good candiate with both RB and WR experience

Not sure if anyone's pasted this link yet (paywalled, but, you know ...)

Best explanation I've seen. But I still don't have it down.

Agreed. The standard kick returner - pure speed guy - won't be the best fit under the new rule. As the article notes, field vision, quickness, improvisation will be key.

And as for kickers: the classic "big leg" guy who gets the highest touchback percentage will lose some value, although long field goals are still important. Some team will find a soccer player, Aussie rules football guy, someone else to be the "kickoff specialist" (maybe the kickoff/punter dual role will come back) who is adept at placing the ball in the optimal spot.

I'm all for making the game more interesting. Goodbye to the post-TD bathroom/fridge run ...
