CURTIS SAMUEL A BILL

He also costs half as much.

So? And he makes 8 times what Shakir does and Shakir is already a better player.

The development of Shakir and Kincaid proved to me that we no longer needed to waste FA on WRs from other organizations.  Instead we need to draft our own cost controlled talent.

I know people here love the shinny new toy.  However at best Samuel is our 4th best receiving option (and maybe 5th behind Cook).  When the early draft pick outplays him and Samuel becomes our 6th or 7th best option, how will y’all feel about his $8 mill price tag when he’s seeing 3 balls a game?

Think about it this way.

Last season the Bills offense was actually relatively easy to defend from a schematic POV, because you only had to defend 30 yards of dirt at most regardless of down and distance. Without even an average deep threat else where, Gabe Davis struggled bigtime as the sole threat downfield, and defenses didn't really adjust a thing. They set either 2 or 1 safety 20 yards down field, one of them went deep, and everyone else sank down. Diggs wasn't that effective of a deep threat, and defenses felt they could run with him past 10-15 yards.

With the addition of Samuel, you inject pure speed with addition of being a real football player. It doesn't matter where he lines up, you can attack those safeties from inside or outside.  But Samuel will only be PART of that solve.

The other part? Someone like Ladd McConkey who's the other deep threat. It allows for versatility.  If you're on 1st and 10 or 2nd and medium, you have different packages that can make use of 1 or both deep guys, and you can use that short to intermediate offense that Allen proved he can run this past season. Defenses starting to squat? Well put in both speed guys, add in Diggs and Kincaid to the underneath, and you're either creating deeper mismatches, or forcing zones and YAC openings in the middle and short.

This is all about deployment of weapons. Bills can attack any down and distance and create matchups they like

Ah, yes, good old Gabe "rolls-his-ankles-more-than-an-8th-grade-basketball-player" Davis

I'm a bit nervous that they will think this is well enough. Plan for the future and get that WR in the first.

My real worry is that they view this as making WR optional in RD1.  I could 100% see them going DL at 28 and then potentially trading up in RD2.

I will be jaw dropped to the floor if they dont go WR in the first 2 rounds.

Three if you consider that he is now a Bill.

I shall call him William Curtis Samuel. It sounds fitting.

Samuel - never wore a bills uniform = Will be an upgrade. that is always the mindset on this board. I think he will be solid. But I also thought crowder and sanders would. We will see but anyone outside of these walls sees Davis as the better player.

Davis could never get on the same page as Allen, and it led to key drops and turnovers.

We want guys who can catch the ball, and we signed two of them. One a huge target, and the other is very good when he gets the ball in his hands.

People complain no matter what. Allen needs help, but you get some and it's just more bitching and moaning

He had a lot of nagging injuries last year but played through them and still caught 17 more balls than Gabe.

I take it you don't like the signing?

I’m fine with it but wouldn’t be shocked it it turns out to be Crowder part two.

Chop is gonna be an elite Pass Rush specialist in this league not long after the draft, and in fact profiles somewhat as Von.

There's more than enough speed in this draft to get one in Rd1 or RD2. But if there's a next level talent like Chop available at 29 they take him no questions.

I didn't say that? How did you quote me on that?

No, no, no. I wasn't quoting you. Nicknames are placed inside of parenthesis.

Example: Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson.

This is just ridiculous.  This guy is his last 3 healthy seasons puts up about 70 catches a season with Washington’s and Carolina’s QB’s….but he will drop off of a table when he gets Allen at QB?  Allen is going to make him worse?

By the way, Samuel spent 75% of his time the last two years in the slot.  Last I looked that was where Shakir excels.

My guess..

Buffalo finally remembers that they should get 4 legit WR’s for Josh Allen.

Diggs (outside)

RD1/RD2 pick (outside)

Samuel (slot)

Shakir (WR4 inside/outside)

Think back to how they used Diggs, Gabe, Beasley and Sanders.

His @$$ better be a 12 sack per season guy if we are giving up a WR @ #28.

More about pressure rate and forcing offenses to scheme around him, and opening things up for the rest of the DL

I didn’t want any WR FAs.  The stats show that they usually underperform their contracts and we already have Kincaid, Diggs and Shakir.  We have the underneath stuff  covered.  Samuel is a 650 yards receiver who doesn’t win catch battles.  A Rookie receiver drafted 20-40 over the last 5 years has averaged about 700 yards as a rookie.  We need someone who can stretch the field, not another mediocre underneath presence.

Now play this out.  What will the people on this board say if we draft someone like Mitchell or Worthy at 28 and they drive Samuel to the bench?  What will they say when Samuel drops some key 3rd down catches, which he does with regularity?  They’ll say why did Beane waste money of this guy.

I was really happy with how this offseason was going, but these two terrible WR signings make me really wonder what Beane is doing for the offense.

I remember who you are now. Your the guy on the game day first half threads that always claims the games over after the Bills have to punt in the 1st quarter.

We’re doing this.  I’d be shocked if we don’t now.

Chop at 28 and then a trade up in RD2 for Coleman or Legette.

Still hoping we draft a couple WRs in this draft not just one. It’s where the most value is by far. Neve seen a WR class this good

Samuel is an outside threat.  Why is this so damn hard to understand?

Of they trade up in the second. Like way up. The problem is you just never know. All these dude that are projected high can get outplayed by a 5 rounder. Strange things sometimes the way that goes but I just don't want to leave WR up to chance. If any of that made sense.

I’d love to be wrong, but I doubt I will be.  Go compare Samuel’s stats to Shakir’s.  Shakir is taller, has similar speed and is significantly more clutch. Shakir averages 50%  more yards per catch than Samuel.  What does Samuel being that we don’t already have?  Nothing.

I love Shakir and think he potentially could be a#2 at some point. You are picking only the data you want. How about the post having Samuel at 3rd in the NFL on separation? Don’t like that ? It doesn’t support your arguments. You are providing only what you want to see.. and zero possibility of upside given Allen, the Bills OL, Cook.

It’s not.  He’s a 50/50 inside/outside guy.

Diggs, Samuel and Shakir can all move around, but if we draft a WR in the first 40 picks or so… Shakir, imo, becomes a heavy use WR4 in a four man rotation.

Not sure how he is an upgrade on anything.  He doesn’t stretch the field as well as Davis, he does gain more yards despite more catches, and he doesn’t help 1st downs at a greater rate than Davis.

Do you know the other thing he doesn’t do as well as Davis?  He doesn’t stay as healthy.

You must have missed the 4 or 5 posts that listed the QBs he played with...

Did the Pats struggle to make it work with both Amendola and Edelman who both played slot?

The last year they played together Edelman had 1100 yards and Amendola 240.  The best year they had together was Edelman 1050 yards to Amendola 650, but they had no decent boundary receivers.

Love Gabe Davis. Not at $ 13M so the Bills get Samuel and resign other players. Crowder got injured and Sanders was ok. Outside these walls a lot of people are thinking the Jags overpaid. Not that they have ever done that repeatedly with WRs 😂
