Allows them to stay competitive for a few years while they try to find their franchise qb. From a front office perspective, letting him walk without another QB in place is a great way to end up fired in a few years. DrDawkinstein Posted July 18, 2023 Share Posted July 18, 2023 I think Carr is a marginally better QB than Jones, but I think Dabol will get more out of Jones than Dennis Allen/Pete Carmichael will get out of Carr. The Jets are locked into Rodgers for the next 2 years, but can get out of it with no dead cap hit after that. The Ravens are locked into Jackson for the ENTIRETY of the 5 years, PLUS 2 more void years to lessen cap hits (yikes!). The Giants are pretty much locked into Jones for only 2 years, and then can get out of it pretty easily. The Saints have 3 years before they can affordably get out of Carr's contract, but also have a void year added to defer cap hits. Given that info, Jones has the most team-friendly contract. And the Giants are best able to change course. So IMO, the Giants are the least likely to regret their deal since even if Jones stinks, they arent locked in. The Ravens and Saints have the biggest risks getting stuck with a contract they cant get out of. So I'm sticking with my vote of the Saints. BarleyNY Posted July 18, 2023 Share Posted July 18, 2023 Gotta look at what the effective guarantees are: Rodgers: 2 years, $107M Jackson: 4 years, $208M but can be shortened to 3 years, $185M Jones: 2 years, $86M Carr: 2 years, $70M or 3 years, $100M Rodgers and Jackson carry the most risk because they’re the highest AAV. Carr is getting paid market value. Jones is above MV (IMO) so I guess I go with him. Still, it’s only two seasons and he gives the Giants a chance to find their next QB in that time. If the best thing about a huge/overpriced contract is that you can get out of it in 2 years....that makes it not a great deal for the team. That's a crazy risk imo. I'm really pulling for him & hope he does well, but I'm just not sure they wouldn't have been better off grabbing a journeyman to fill the spot until they can find a better option.
