Played in an era where it was much harder to be a passer. Or Brett Favre? He wasn't as fast running but obviously had the toughness and the arm strength. Steve Young was an amazing passer and runner though his running was not as violent as JA's. Montana was also sneaky mobile early on. The height evolution at QB is interesting. In the past being too tall was felt to be a negative. Then guys like Brady and Manning come along and even though they are statues back there they move in the pocket well enough to dominate. Now guys like Newton, Josh, and Herbert are the total package of height, passing ability, and athletic ability in and out of the pocket. All of the ELITE QBs you've mentioned here are smaller than Allen, and at least two have less arm talent and at least two are less gifted runners. Therefore, they are ALL less "talented," despite being awesome. Cam Newton and John Elway are maybe the closest physical comps? Newton has the size and athleticism but not quite the arm. As for height, I just don't think there were that many good tall passers in the past. Agree with Cam as closest physical comp, and on the field with respect to power running tendencies. Cunningham had more freakish speed and arm talent than Cam, but due to a slighter frame was a different style of runner. People forget that he played his whole career with a torn ACL, and that extra weight hindered his agility amongst other things. Cam’s probably the best “body type” comparison. Elway/Favre are probably the best arm comparisons... JA17 has a bit of their arm arrogance too. Kid is a freak and there really isn’t a complete talent like him. As for the height evolution….. that’s to be expected with the size of linemen increasing as well. QBs have to keep up in order to excel on the field by seeing over larger Olines and/ avoiding larger defenders. Brees and Wilson are aberrations in that they’re so good in the pocket while being shorter even when they don’t have top shelf receiving corps. Most shorter guys have difficulties timing routes, seeing through the trash, and anticipating throwing lanes. As a result bigger more mobile QBs are going to be more likely to succeed. If he’d have blossomed a little bit sooner as a teen he’d have played three years at Alabama or Ohio State and have been the no-doubt 1st pick in the draft. From a sheer physical standpoint you can’t name a QB with more impressive all-around “tools.” The key was always when, not if, he would get enough reps and coaching to become a true quarterback, because his drive and desire are also unmatched.
