If You Grew Up in Upstate NY.......

How many of you swam in the Erie Canal?

Me & all my buddies did a lot back in the 60's. But as I look back now and remember that water in those days, I wonder how I was able to

survive in that stuff.  But jumping/diving off those high bridges was a rush.

What say you? Got any "war stories"?

The Erie Canal is a canal that traverses east–west through upstate New York, eastern United States, as part of the cross-state route of the New York State Canal System.

Albany is upstate.  Nice call!

We swam in it not from the Rochester Airport in the late 70's. We had one guy who we always kind of pushed off the bridge first to make sure their weren't any cars below. We ended up getting chased out of there by a sheriffs boat after he called for a couple of police cars.

I see you flunked Grade 7 NYS Social Studies. Smoking too much dope. 😉

New York City is highlighted in red; "Upstate" refers to some or all of the area north and west of the city.

Not swam it but know someone who ran it... For my niece's husband who lost his battle with cancer last year @ 35 years old.

Anything that is NOT Manhattan is upstate, according to many people.

We used to swim in the quarries in Canada…..after dropping by the beer stores. Good times!

The simple solution to invasive carp invasion is more recipes for carp.

They could also turn them into dog food like they do farming catfish in Alabama and Mississippi (not all catfish goes into dogfood with best sold to processors and wholesalers).

Let's just say "this isn't my first rodeo" 😆 with say the likes of Mr.Gugny and the Chefmaster . They like to feel special and don't realize there's a big world out there that shares some of their geographical space... It's the only reason why guys like that fail to recognize that a state with it's name the same as the nation's largest city, is greatly influenced by that city, is first subdivided into 2 parts and then 9 specific regions.  People like that "pull the cart before the horse." OR should I say the barge before the mule on the towpath. 😏

heck, yeah! In the late 80s/early 90s, in rochester, we would jump off some of the bridges, old locks, and walls into the canal in our sneakers. We called it “scumming.”  The cops were always looking out for kids scumming, so you had to do it on the down low. I was never as daring as my friends, and would mostly do it off lower cement walls, not bridges or locks (still probably 30 feet high).

A buddy of mine also had a rope on a tree And we would swing out over the canal and jump in.

in hindsight, it was pretty dangerous, given all the wood, debris, and other junk floating around there.

My sister had very long hair when she was young. It saved her life. We were at some quarry or lake with a giant wood float in the middle. Somebody jumped on her, knocked her in the head and knocked her out. Somebody else saw a long pony tail floating out from under the raft. He reached down and pulled on it. And eventually my sister appeared.

We are all lucky to have made it this far!

Actually, it's the official designation from New York State.  Everything north of the NYC metro (ie, north of Westchester and Rockland Counties) are part of Upstate New York.   That's from somebody who worked for New York State for more than a decade, including a stint with the old Department of Economic Development (it has a new name these days) that included the "I Love NY" tourism program.

Back in the 60's and 70's the Rochester area was considered Upstate. There was even an insert magazine to our Sunday paper titled UPSTATE. Not sure exactly when the Rochester region became associated with Western NY or the Finger Lakes but it wasn't always that way.

Just because the insert called it Upstate doesn't mean it ever was.  What that likely means is whoever decided to call it upstate was from NYC.

"Lucky" is right, Augie! I'm glad your sister survived. I almost punched my ticket at least 3 times in the canal. One by drowning, one by

hitting my head on a rock at the bottom, and the other time almost falling about 60 feet into a shallow, rocky creek going under the canal

on the back side of a spill way. Boys being boys in our neighborhood.     thanks for posting, Augie.
