Bills cap situation from the former Assistant GM.

Actually more recently he said he'd like to get the Giants to around $40 million in cap space.

Trade Barkley? That saves them more than $7 million.   Sterling Shepard released after June 1st saves about $8.5 million?   How about trading James Bradberry - That would save them more than $12 million.

I remember KC not having much cap room last year and they made it work. Sure Beane and co. can do some things

It's all about kicking the can down the road and the Bills can generate tons of cap space with a combination of any of these moves:

- Releasing/trading Beasely

- Releasing/restructure Williams

- Restructuring Tre White deal

- Releasing Feliciano, Matekevich, etc.

- Trading Edmonds

- Extending Diggs

Or indeed extending Edmunds. Not saying I'd do that but I still think they might.

You are probably right but still holding out hopes he's played his last down for this team and we move him now why he still has real value (maybe even a 1st rounder).

It honestly be a win/win for both sides especially if Edmunds lands with a defensive coach and scheme that provide a better fit for his skill set.

The question is if they do try to extend Edmunds, do they have pay higher than they got Milano for?

I don't believe he is as good as Milano but I would think he may feel slighted if he were tendered something below Milano's contract.

They could maybe do 5 year - 50 million but I don't think he'd accept it.

I know many are wondering where the cap space is going to come from, but I remember this quote from Joe Schoen about a month ago. Sounds like the Bills were/are planning to be players in free agency.

The Bills aren't going to be players.  They're going to be play-YAHZ!

Said it then........but picking up Edmunds' $12.7M option was clearly a mistake when they could have just transition tagged him for $2M more in the event that he had a REAL breakout season.     His option figure was bloated by two Pro Bowl trips that made him look like a top 4 MLB in the NFL when he was just more like a top 10.

Would have liked to see what playing to EARN that money would have done for him.........it's just human nature to play better when you have something on the line..........which Edmunds did not since his 2022 salary was already full guaranteed last spring.

This year,  Ed Oliver seems like a lock to get his option picked up as it's only $10M.  The transition is currently about $3.5M more than that and the full on FT is about $7M more.   Basically the spread is much higher than with Edmunds.

Then they can save the tag if needed to use on Dawson Knox in 2023 if necessary as the TT/FT at TE will be much lower than a top TE aav.

But only because of the stadium, right?

Yeah, about month old. Yet people are saying we have no cap.

More than one thing can be true?

Bills have no cap at present.  In fact we have negative cap, $-3.9M

A number of moves, including re-signing a couple players, asking a couple players to renegotiate, trading, and cutting player, could be anticipated to result in substantial cap for FA - IF they go through

So let me get this straight....

You think Edmunds sucks as a player.

You also think another team will trade us a 1st round pick on a $12M 1 year rental - for a guy who according to you, is demonstrated to suck as a player.

I know I shouldn't respond, but the mind of a troll is fascinating at times.

I never said Edmunds sucks. My take on his is that he's simply miscast in this defensive scheme and not worth signing long term.

But given his age and skill set there might be another team out there that covets him more and believes he could 'break out' in a 3-4 defense which is where he belongs on the outside.

"some money".

Many seem to have taken that as "lots of money." But that's not what he said.

No, they're not. I mean there may be some guy in his mother's basement covered with Cheetoh dust saying that, but nobody with any degree of understanding is saying "no cap." They just aren't. They're saying we won't have a lot of cap.

The reason they're saying that is because we won't have a lot of cap.

EDIT: By the way people are responding, it seems that when you said "We have no cap," you actually were referring to the current figure of -$3.9M, at least as Spotrac has it? That's some wildly unclear writing, if so, but if that's what you meant, then it is correct that we are indeed below the cap currently by an amount that the NFL and the Bills have on file, and it's indeed very close to the amounts that Spotrac and OvertheCap have.

Unless they act in a way that Brandon Beane has never acted and kick a lot of cans down the road.

He could indeed do that. But it's not likely.

Edmunds is a "core building block."  - Brandon Beane

Kid yourself if you must, but he'll be here. And luckily for us, Beane has a history of kicking a few cans down the road, but not many. Because of that we look to be in decent cap shape in 2023.

The best guesses at cuts, re-structures and re-signings I've seen so far is the Cover 1 Salary Cap Spectacular.

They predict a bit more than $25M after the cuts and then after re-signing Horrible Harry and a few others ending up with around $10M.

But they predict they will have a few contracts they can keep in their pocket as options to cash in as kicked cans if they need money. They called them coupons that they could cash in if they want.

That's probably pretty close.

To be fair they aren't wrong.  As it stands today we have no cap.  So any potential cut/trade/restructure the board makes up to get us cap is a figment of our imagination until it actually happens.   The amount of cap we make up in our heads isnt reality right now.  The reality is the Bills are currently over the salary cap.

Beane also believes the cap will normalize over the next 3-5 years. So expect him to create $15+ million in space just based on his projections. That doesn't include players released creating short-term dead cap. That's just restructures. I think we'll see a lot of restructures with the idea that the cap will normalize.

We'll also see players released to create cap.

I 100% agree.   They already have a strong idea of what the cap will be in 2023 and 2024 so they can pretty quick work on restructures that include adding more years to the contract.   I think they will probably go into free agency with money to spend.  But I think the skepticism from other posters saying we dont have cap is warranted.   Legal tampering is less than a week away and the Bills are still over the cap by a couple million.

Don't expect a lot of re-structures. Beane has never worked that way.

Do expect a few, though. That is the way he has always worked.

And yes, certainly expect players released to create cap space. And a bunch more given a choice of a salary reduction or a release.

They have till the 15th. No rush till the new NFL year starts on that day.

Yeah, that's not a smart take.

You:  "simply miscast in this defensive scheme and not worth signing long term"

McBeane (asked whether Edmunds is a long-term building block moving for this team):  "Yeah, we definitely do."

And frankly, between a small group of Bills fans and Beane, the one to trust isn't the small group of fans.

I agree, lets open up a massive hole right in the middle of our defense. Just because Edmunds plays a different style (likely one that Frazier and McD like) doesnt make him a bad player.

We need a true run stopping one tech- we haven't had one for the last few years. Plug someone in the middle that can actually stop the run and watch how dominant Edmunds becomes.

I dont think anyone on this board knows ( I certainly dont) what is being asked of Edmunds in this defense. Is he supposed to be a guy that plays downhill, is he supposed to just clog up passing lanes because he is so big and athletic, is he struggling because we dont really have a true run stopping defensive line?

I suspect our coaches know the answers to all of these questions. I would not be shocked if Edmunds is extended.
