Even Seen a Bear? (Take 2)

Recommended Posts

No, but the closest ones reputed yo my house were reported at the Burchfield Nature Center at Union and  Clinton in West Seneca and  beyond the West Seneca garage on Union Road.  A young one was hit by a car on the 190 near the Hamburg St off tamp once.

On vacation in Valdez, Alaska and Jasper, Alberta. Both times from a safe distance whilst we watched knuckleheads who were at an unsafe distance.

Jasper was just a single bear crossing the road, Valdez was multiple bears, including a mother and cubs chowing down on salmon. Good times.

Mt.Baldy @ Philmont, New Mexico...Strolled right under our dining fly while we were eating breakfast. The smallish bear ate our Pop-Tarts and SwissMiss, powdered milk, all the good stuff, in some brush about 10 meters after we ran it off. Left us only dry granola until we could get to a staffed camp and reprovison a few days later.  That SOB! Got pix on my Kodak DiscCamera that should be digitized.

Mt.Marcy, New York.  Ranger warned us to hang our bear bag extra high and extra strong with the knot going along multiple trees because "Cliff" the bear was very adapt at getting people's ***** and would follow the line to the knot. I stood on another's shoulders when we strung the line to tie the knot.  That night we had a lean-too campsite.   We thought one guy was ***** -ing around when he said he heard something... Grabbed a flashlight and there was Cliff the black bear on his hand legs swinging at the knot multiple trees down from the bag.  We chased him off with anything we could make noise with.  That morning down by stream  we heard other backpackers clanking pots and pans.  I had to be indisposed that morning,  went up over a swale to dig a cat hole and bingo, there was Cliff's cache!!! From other hikers!!! All the good stuff, Front Loops, Tang and cocoa, etc...!  Hope that SOB didn't mind me shitting in his kitchen! 😆

Yes. Numerous times in Adirondacks and Allegany s.p.

My wife as child would always take their week family vacations at Long Lake, she said the highlight of the week was to go to the open dump and watch the bears  eat.  Now,  there are closed transfer stations.  Thanks for wrecking the family 👪 moment environmentalists!  People would watch and when bears started to get close, the people would frantically back up.   Good wholesome AND CHEAP mid-week activity: "Let's go watch the bears eat at the open dump!  Everyone into the car!" Better than any zoo on planet!

Multiple times here in WV.  The most memorable was a bear came out of the woods and waddled

across the fairway as we were ready to tee off on number one.  Yes, we let him play through.

Alas in the county where I live some knotheads are feeding the bears and they are losing

their fear of humans.  Naturally they will come back to where the food is and go to other houses

other than the peeps who feed them.

Bing back open town dumps.  Problem solved  like the first 150 years of our country. They never used to come into town,  do damage.  They had a place to go.  LoL...

Yes, climbed right into a dumpster in Allegany State Park at the campgrounds with cabins. Proceeded to pig out and roll around in the trash and throw things out of the dumpster, looked as happy as a pig in ****, it was glorious!

So............you saw the bear from inside the dumpster? Good place to hide!  Just close the cover if he gets too close!

There is a bear in the woods.

For some people, the bear is easy to see.

Others don't see it at all.

Some people say the bear is tame.

Others say it's vicious and dangerous.

Since no one can really be sure who's right, isn't it smart to be as strong as the bear?

If there is a bear.

A bear might be the worst way to go in terms of death by animal. They basically want to dominate you and play with you and slowly kill you, making sure you feel pain. They also will eat you alive if they're hungry, which is always. I'm absolutely terrified of Bears.

A couple of times...once in Glacier NP, a grizzly was climbing parallel to us as we were hiking up to one of the glaciers, but far enough away to not be a danger.

Another time just a couple years ago in Tetons NP, wife and I almost walked into one near Jenny Lake. Think it was a smaller black bear. Ignored us, thankfully. I think we were about 30 feet away from it.

I spend a lot of time hiking and camping and have seen 8 black bear so far this year, 5 of them very close as I was downwind and quiet.

None of this is even remotely true. 😄

This would make for some great reality TV. Which of you wants to fight to bear to prove themselves correct?

It is not true regardless of what internet nonsense you may have read.

No bear wants a fight, they want to be left alone.

Polar bears are dangerous and in very rare, specific circumstances some brown bears may consider you a food source, but they are not interested in slowly killing you or eating you alive. 🤭

As for black bears, they are about as dangerous as a racoon. The reason you rarely see them is that they are absolutely terrified of huge bipedal humans and will almost always run away well before you even knew they were there.

I ran into a habituated black bear just after sunset while I was by myself hiking in the Smokies one time. He followed me for 10-15 minutes until I finally turned around and went right at him. He took off at that point but he did have me ready to jam a hickory walking stick right down his snout.

Have you ever encountered a mommy bear and her cubs? I have never. Thank goodness.

Yeah, more than once.

One time I even managed to approach a group (1 huge momma and 4 yearlings) slowly and calmly enough and sat down about 50-75' from her that she actually let me hang around and watch them for about 5-10 minutes before she finally led her kiddos away.

If she would have huffed at me I'd have given her more space, but she didn't and it was a really cool experience.

Are you Dr. Dolittle?

Actually, I do sort of have a way with most critters.

I probably get along with many animals better than I do some people.

I'm kind of weird

If you can stay calm instead of running and screaming it will end up being one of the cooler things you ever get to see.

Try it if you ever get a chance; they're not actually dangerous, so you've got nothing to lose (except maybe a pair of clean underwear ; - )

The road to hell is paved with good intentions.

Honestly,  it's  a hard situation.   Unfed bears are angry bears when their tummys rumble! So many parallels to other aspects of life!

Oh... And why I chuckled at your post:

I have been dead for 30 years. 😉 😜

Yes. They used to climb on our back porch and Up on the thing we made for bird feeders. Crazy seeing a bear on top of a 2x4 on a fence postp

Why is all this stuff happening now.  The logo for Long Lake, has always  been two bears. They never used to wander into town... How long has the town been  there?

Maybe the bears don't have a purpose anymore?  A place to go?  Play and work? Maybe they are just misunderstood?

So , you wanna live on roots and berries or that nice Big Mac bag that the wonderful town folk fella left  LOCKED in his new Ford F-150 accidentally?  JC, nowadays you gotta  be damn near perfect, not make any mistakes.  Like forget  about a smelly empty bag. That bear doesn't  know the truck is locked and he can't get in.  But a few little blows and scratches will surely test things! 😉
