The Irishman

I expected more but Scorsese, Deniro, Pesce, Pacino et al, have set such impossibly high standards that it’s difficult even for them to reach those heights at times. It was a middle of the road movie, imo.

I gotta award extra points for adding Action Bronson and Sebastian Maniscalco to the movie.

Bronson as the casket salesman was a nice touch.

I go into Scorcese movies thinking I won't like them and always come away pleasantly surprised.

I enjoyed the Irishman.  I was once again reminded of Anna Paquin's stunning beauty and Scorcese's attention to detail for the set pieces is excellent.

Joe Pesci stole the show in the movie.

Definetly.     He was cooler than a fan

His grin as Frank told Hoffa he not only paints houses but does a little carpentry on the side was awesome.

Going in for a second watch.

Thumbs up/Thumbs down ?   Where are we at ?

I liked it.    Deniro and Pesci are awesome.  Pacino meh

Watched it this weekend.   Thought it moved pretty well for a 3 hour movie.

Had the opposite opinion on the acting though.   Thought Pacino stole the show.  Only thing that bothered me was Deniro in the young guy makeup.   The scene at the grocery looked odd to me.

Anyways, enjoyed it but probably wouldnt give it a second watch.

I don't think it was makeup, I thought they aged/de-aged them digitally with some of the new technology (similar to what they did to Will Smith in his last movie where he fights a younger version of himself). I recall hearing something about it before the movie was out and people thinking how it would affect the industry where any actor can play someone at any age, or look completely different

Ahh makes sense.   It just looks really odd.  Almost like his features were too soft and corpse like.

Hard to sell these guys as younger when their bodies look and move like old men.

Otherwise, the movie was great. Maybe they could've broken it up into 2 parts, but I never felt like it was dragging.

The acting is unsurprisingly awesome. Pacino's performance was inconsistent. Could they have gotten Jack Nicholson to play Hoffa? I just realized he hasn't been in a movie for almost 10 years.

Nicholson already did that role. Has an actor ever played the same role in two unrelated movies before?

That's why I mentioned him.

I wanna say yes...but it's rare obviously.

Paul Newman played the same detective character in a couple films, I think.

There's also a British actress who plays queen Elizabeth in a bunch of films and TV. I think just because she looks so much like her. She was in the Austin Powers movie.

I was starting to really enjoy Bronson and Mario Batali's budding friendship.  They were doing some fun cooking stuff.  Then poof, Mario disappeared.

I really wanted to see it because it looked like Goodfellas basically. But hearing some of the reviews, I may wait for when it rolls out on DVD.

Or you could just do a free trial on Netflix...

I liked it and thought it was quite true to the book. I found the digitization vastly over rated. It made everyone look like cartoon characters

It reminded me of the movie Blow.

Jim Norton did a spot-on impression of Don Rickles. I honestly thought it was CGI or something and didn't recognize him until the credits.

Good story, good acting. Could have done without the last hour. The movie should have ended with the epilogue after killing Hoffa, rather than dragging it out - for an hour - to gain sympathy for DeNiro's character.

Excellent movie and great casting.  Dragged a bit at times but overall another Scorsese masterpiece

Tho I was a little disappointed Todd from Breaking Bad didn't get whacked.  God I hate that f*cker

Landry Clark from Friday night lights is the man.

He also was awesome in Fargo.

I'm a huge Scorsese fan but I thought the Irishman was blah. SPOILERS

  • DeNiro was way too old for the role. Laughably old. MS should have used a younger actor and aged him. "Beating up" the grocer was almost a turn-off. Overall, it just didn't work for me.
  • The cinematography was great: sets, customs, music, etc.
  • Very happy to have Joe Pesci back.  He was outstanding, every look said volumes.
  • I was concerned Pacino would ham it up, which he did, but his Hoffa was appropriate. A larger-than-life character.
  • My biggest complaint: The story is not at all historically accurate.  Yes, it's based on Frank Sheeran's book, but Sheeran was a con artist or a pathetic old man looking for attention. Sheeran was indeed a labor boss, but a small-time guy who would have been lost to history if not for his claim to be an assassin. His stories have been debunked by nearly every historian, FBI agent, mobster and witnesses. Unfortunately, MS turned him into the Forest Gump of the labor-mafia world. At every turn Frank was there. Even Pesci's character, while a substantial mafia boss, had much less to do with Hoffa.
  • A MUCH better story would have been about Hoffa and his relationship to the Mafia. He could have intertwined the teamster's and mafia's history, with both literally and figuratively killing each other off in the mid-70s. Turn it into a six-hour miniseries, explore many other characters, the time period, etc.
  • Anyway, I looked forward to The Irishman for months and I don't need to see it again. Instead, I'll watch Goodfellas, Casino and the Departed a few dozen more times.

comic books and complete rip-offs of prior hits...

that's all they got...  :(

And if that isn't bad enough, it's almost impossible to find a movie that isn't "woke".
"Ford vs Ferrari" is a rare gem that has no agenda. Just a good story.

That aside, I thought "The Irishman" was decent but not great. Acting ok apart from Pacino laying it on too thick, yet again.
