K-9
I expected more but Scorsese, Deniro, Pesce, Pacino et al, have set such impossibly high standards that it’s difficult even for them to reach those heights at times. It was a middle of the road movie, imo.

dpberr
I go into Scorcese movies thinking I won't like them and always come away pleasantly surprised. I enjoyed the Irishman. I was once again reminded of Anna Paquin's stunning beauty and Scorcese's attention to detail for the set pieces is excellent. Joe Pesci stole the show in the movie.

Only thing that bothered me was Deniro in the young guy makeup. The scene at the grocery looked odd to me. I don't think it was makeup, I thought they aged/de-aged them digitally with some of the new technology (similar to what they did to Will Smith in his last movie where he fights a younger version of himself). I recall hearing something about it before the movie was out and people thinking how it would affect the industry where any actor can play someone at any age, or look completely different
Not at the table Karlos
Too slow and long. Lost interest halfway through. Gonna try to watch it again when I have time because I’m a fan of pretty much everyone in it. LeGOATski
Hard to sell these guys as younger when their bodies look and move like old men. Otherwise, the movie was great. Maybe they could've broken it up into 2 parts, but I never felt like it was dragging. The acting is unsurprisingly awesome. Pacino's performance was inconsistent. Could they have gotten Jack Nicholson to play Hoffa? I just realized he hasn't been in a movie for almost 10 years.

That's why I mentioned him. I wanna say yes...but it's rare obviously. Paul Newman played the same detective character in a couple films, I think. There's also a British actress who plays queen Elizabeth in a bunch of films and TV. I think just because she looks so much like her. She was in the Austin Powers movie. stony
Good movie. Wish it would have been made 15 years ago so it didn't look like Deniro was curb stomping in slow-mo. Thought Pesci was the standout.

Rico
I saw it in the theatre before it hit Netflix. My reaction was another Scorsese masterpiece, though it may be a while before I watch it again due to the length.

/dev/null
Excellent movie and great casting. Koko78
Good story, good acting. Could have done without the last hour. The movie should have ended with the epilogue after killing Hoffa, rather than dragging it out - for an hour - to gain sympathy for DeNiro's character. Max Fischer
I'm a huge Scorsese fan but I thought the Irishman was blah. SPOILERS DeNiro was way too old for the role. Laughably old. MS should have used a younger actor and aged him. "Beating up" the grocer was almost a turn-off. Overall, it just didn't work for me. The cinematography was great: sets, customs, music, etc. Very happy to have Joe Pesci back. He was outstanding, every look said volumes. I was concerned Pacino would ham it up, which he did, but his Hoffa was appropriate. A larger-than-life character. My biggest complaint: The story is not at all historically accurate. Yes, it's based on Frank Sheeran's book, but Sheeran was a con artist or a pathetic old man looking for attention. Sheeran was indeed a labor boss, but a small-time guy who would have been lost to history if not for his claim to be an assassin. His stories have been debunked by nearly every historian, FBI agent, mobster and witnesses. Unfortunately, MS turned him into the Forest Gump of the labor-mafia world. At every turn Frank was there. Even Pesci's character, while a substantial mafia boss, had much less to do with Hoffa. A MUCH better story would have been about Hoffa and his relationship to the Mafia. He could have intertwined the teamster's and mafia's history, with both literally and figuratively killing each other off in the mid-70s. Turn it into a six-hour miniseries, explore many other characters, the time period, etc. Anyway, I looked forward to The Irishman for months and I don't need to see it again. Instead, I'll watch Goodfellas, Casino and the Departed a few dozen more times.

That aside, I thought "The Irishman" was decent but not great. Acting ok apart from Pacino laying it on too thick, yet again.
