Clean sense of humor and really gets to the nitty gritty of every day things in a humorous way (the guy who created "blank inside" cards and the guy who called into CBS to report the birds chirping in the background during The Masters were not anywhere near Georgia...discovered CBS used fake bird noises during the tournament...funny bits). Favorite female comedian: Lisa Lampanelli. They say her act (likeDon Rickles) is the easiest form of comedy but she absolutely kills it making fun of every race/gender/sexual orientation in the audience. He's my brother's all time favorite comedian. I happened to see him on the night of my brother's birthday, who still lives up in Buffalo. He called him and wished him a happy birthday, and talked to him on my phone for like two minutes. Jeselnik is funny, and talented. But not my style. I think Robin William's was better in movies and TV then a traditional stand up though. Samantha Bee is ok, but not great, because a good chunk of her act is political I can see how some might not like it. I like Trevor Noah and have watched his specials. Jim Jeffries is meh to me I dont hate him, but cant really say I like him. The only standup I have seen live that I can remember was Lewis Black who was great, and Canadian Rick Mercer, his show was alright but was mostly him just talking about stories from his TV show and showing clips. I have never been able to stand Jeselnik, his act just seems offensive to be offensive and everything is just to be shocking. I would rather listen to Daniel Tosh who can be offensive but not as much. One of my favorite standup specials was Eugene Merman 'Vegan on his way to the Complaint Store'. I also have watch John Molanys specials and thought they were pretty good, but I found his short lived TV show was horrible. I think with some, they may be funny, but more as actors in movies or TV, but not great doing traditional standup and also the opposite for others, great at traditional standup but bad in shows or movies. Don't take my word for it; just ask any famous comedian like Jerry Seinfeld, Bill Maher, Chris Rock, Louis C.K., Jay Leno, etc. who they think is the best. They know better than anyone that they aren't on that level. Always heard great things about Lenny Bruce, but have never seen his work, and I know he was an influence on Carlin. I might give Richard Pryor an honorable mention, but he's no George Carlin. Carlin elevated comedy to an art form and he got better and better at it as he went along. He actually declined by the time of his last HBO special, IMO, when he had the puffy cheeks. He was a bit too old to still do it at that point. His HBO specials in the '90s when he looked like this are Carlin at the height of his powers: I'd also note the really early stuff is nowhere near as good as the later stuff; he totally re-invented himself and improved dramatically over the years until he had his thing perfected. In order to appriciate Lenny Bruce, you have to understand his historical context. He was an absolute comic genius, and very edgy for his time, and pushed the envelope, carving the way for many comedians we know today, including Carlin. That said, because the envelope has been pushed much farther, and a lot of his stuff has been done, it doesn't come off the way it was supposed to, because we've been desensitized. I'd compare it to I Love Lucy. Obviously she wasn't controversial. But I remember hearing about how I Love Lucy was one of the greatest sitcoms of all time. When I watched i myself, I thought it was okay. But it was nothing I hadn't seen before. Until I learned the history. The reason I'd seen it all before, is because it all stemmed from Lucy. I liked him much better in the 70s in the “7 words you can’t say on television” era. Afterwards, everything was just a play on words, and to me, that got old pretty fast, great in small doses though. He's just got one of those voices that even when he's not saying a funny line I still laugh because of the way he delivers it. Kathleen Madigan is my favorite female comedienne.. (I typed that word naturally but had to look it up to make sure it was right) My friend works at the Comedy Works here in Denver and introduced me to her years ago. She definitely doesn't just do the typical female jokes. All time, definitely Carlin though. He made the mold and then broke it. I know every word of Occupation Foole but still laugh anyway.
