The Rosen One
Ā
The numbers havenā€™t been pretty for rookie quarterback Josh Rosen but heā€™s been playing much better than they indicate. No, Iā€™m not just saying that because I loved him coming into the draft. Heā€™s doing the the best he can with a porous offensive line and uncreative offensive scheme ā€” both of which led to last weekā€™s firing of offensive coordinator Mike McCoy.
Ā
First time play-caller Byron Leftwich called his first game against the 49ers in Week 8. For most of the game, the offense didnā€™t look much different, but it came to life late, as the Cardinals scored 15 points in the fourth quarter to squeak ahead of the 49ers for their second win of the season.
Ā
What stood out in Rosenā€™s college tape was his ability to read coverages and throw the ball with great anticipation. Those two traits showed themselves on Rosenā€™s game-winning touchdown pass:
Ā
TimelyRespectfulAphid-size_restricted.gi
Ā
The defense was in a cover 4 zone with cornerback Ahkello Witherspoon (No. 23) playing the sideline quarter and safety Tyvis Powell (No. 30) playing the hash quarter.
Ā
Tight end Ricky Seals-Jones (No. 86) motioned inside of receiver Christian Kirk (No. 13) and ran an out route while Kirk ran a dig route inside. Witherspoon passed off Kirk and picked up Jones, who ran into his zone. Powell made a slight mistake by taking a couple of steps outside with Jones.
Ā
Powell wasnā€™t terribly out of position but Rosen saw that he had his hips turned outside and knew he could fit in a pass to Kirk. When Rosen decided where he was going with the ball, Kirk was just getting into his break and wasnā€™t close to crossing past Powell. Rosen anticipated that we was going to get open and threw the ball with faith that Kirk was going to do his job ā€” thatā€™s high-level quarterbacking.
Ā

Ā
The offensive line did a good job of picking up the 49ersā€™ defensive line stunt and gave Rosen the time he needed. If they can protect Rosen more often, the Cardinals will see more big-time throws like this from their first-round draft pick.

Wrong yet again. As if I haven't talked about the poor supporting cast surrounding Allen that's an indictment of Beane and McDermott.Ā  I have in fact done so repeatedly.Ā  From no veteran mentor to the poor WR and OL they have done him no favors.Ā

Ā

Ā

It ain't an indictment of Beane and McDermott. It's what happens in the second year of a rebuild. It's just a shame Allen didn't get the year to sit and learn that they obviously planned for him to have.

Ā

Agreed that not giving him a vet mentor from early in the offseason was a bad move. My feeling is that they thought McCarron would serve. But they should have brought in someone who had more experience than McCarron. That's a really fair criticism.

Ā

But a poor surrounding roster is just what happens this early in a rebuild.

Josh Rosen is a highly touted rookie QB, albeit a struggling one at the moment. Josh Allen is a good athlete. I think Josh Allen would make a good H-back. Maybe we can sign him and Tebow and run the wing T offense because we sure as heck can't pass the ball with any consistency. Ground and pound baby!

Ā

If you guys think he's all of a sudden going to "get it" then you are delusional. He's never been a good passing QB at any level of competition.

Ā

Ā

You're right, he's not going to suddenly get it.

Ā

If he gets it ... and he easily might ... it will be a long drawn-out process. That process might hit a tipping point making it looks "sudden." But it'll actually be the result of a long continual process. If it happens.

Ā

As for who is delusional ... that would be anyone who thinks they know the future of Josh Allen, positive or negative. It's possible to guess right. But what you're doing there is guessing, and confusing opinion and fact.

The Cardinals pulled quarterbackĀ Josh RosenĀ in the fourth quarter of Sundayā€™s 40-14 loss to the Falcons after he threw two interceptions, took six sacks and got hit many more times, but they wonā€™t be taking him out of the starting lineup.
Ā
That was the message from head coach Steve Wilks on Monday when he was asked about the possibility of playing out the string withĀ Mike GlennonĀ rather than the teamā€™s first-round draft pick.
Ā
Wilks said he believes Rosen will continue to benefit from playing despite the shoddy state of the teamā€™s offensive line and, via Darren Urban of the teamā€™s website, that making a change would play into a ā€œmindset ofĀ giving up and quitting.ā€
Ā

Given the importance of Rosen to future plans in Arizona, itā€™s not surprising that the Cardinals would opt to go this direction. Should the Rams and/or Seahawks subject Rosen to the same kind of pressure that the Falcons provided on Sunday, the team can opt to shut him down but if thereā€™s anything left to gain this season it is from getting Rosen experience he can use to improve.

RosenĀ completed 13 of 22 passes for 132 yards and two interceptions during Sunday's 40-14 loss to Atlanta. He added eight yards and a lost fumble on two carries.

Sunday started off well enough. Following an opening punt by Atlanta, Rosen completed three of four passes for 63 yards to set up a David Johnson touchdown run. The luck ran out there. On the next Arizona drive, Rosen's pass was tipped, intercepted, and returned by Deion Jones for a touchdown. Following two more turnovers and back-to-back fourth-quarter drives in which theĀ CardinalsĀ lost yardage, the rookie was benched as veteran Mike Glennon finished out the game. Head coach Steve Wilks said that Rosen will be back under center next Sunday against a Rams defense that has been so-so this season. With reports of some house-cleaning coming to Arizona, it'd be a surprise if Rosen is able to turn it around this season.

There are only two games left this season, we'll see if he leaves an impression on me that I can carry all offseason.Ā  As of now, no, I'm still not there.

Thats because youā€™re stuck on a position and intellectually inflexible. Take heart though, friend. Thereā€™s an ever shrinking community of ā€œbills fansā€ just like you right here on tsw.Ā

I live in Phoenix. Ā I have been pounding the table for Rosen to take a break like Allen did. Ā He is getting manhandled behind this even worse than the Bills offensive line.

Ā

I fear the GM, HC will be gone at the end of the year with Rosen scared from many hits. Ā I like Allen and I'm glad he's on the Bills but I wanted to see Rosen do well too. Ā People forget these are young men who I only wish the best for.

Ā

Unless they are on the pats then the heck with you.

I think Rosen will be fine, like Allen he had plenty of flashes of potential. Both Josh's were going to have some tough times on these teams.

Best thing for Rosen...and Darnold is for both teams to follow the trend and do what the Rams and Bears did. Ā Remove your Defensive Minded and philosophical Head Coach and bring in the hottest, modern Offensive Minded Coach on the market.

Ā

Ravens will be too successful to need a chance and Mayfield seemingly just has that IT factor which can carry him over any type of Coach.

Ā

Rosen and Darnold would both benefit the most to get their own McVay or Nagy as son as possible.

Ā

New OFfensive Minded HC, Hit on First 2 picks and use some FA $$$$ and things may look 180 this time next season.

Ā

we shall see!

Nah, has nothing to do with feelings, if it's actual football talk and not hall monitoring, we're good.

What's the point of being here if you have everyone on your ignore list?

I don't use the ignore feature, I read everyones post whether I agree with them or not, it's what makes this place go around.Ā

Ā

A couple of things here:

Ā

The Jets didn't "pull the wool" over anyone.Ā  Buffalo was in on the trade talks with Indy, but the Colts themselves said that they didn't want to move down past 6.

Ā

Secondly, Rosen hasn't "sucked".Ā  He's played like a rookie.Ā  Rookies usually don't look great.

Yeah, that whole going 4-5 as a starter while having to be the team's entire offense thing just doesn't sit well with anyone

Ā

No offense dude: I think your biggest issue is magnificently unreal expectations of a rookie QB

It works well for banning the wannabe MODS or fandom card revokers.Ā  Pure football arguments are all good.

So you acknowledge that you have high expectations and that Allen is unlikely to meet them, then say, they will go even higher next year?

Ā

Yes, if he is surrounded with more talent, I expect more of everything from him.Ā  Not sure I'd want to go as far as expecting playoff's, but I want to see a higher completion %, more passes, more yards, better TD:INT ratio, and ofc more wins.

Ā

I expect a franchise QB.

Ā

Ā

First, why would I include Pederson? Ā My examples were ofĀ Offensive Coaches who arrived in their QBs second season and saved both of them (Goff and Trubiskys) from going in the bust bin and have them playing at Playoff level caliber (hint...both teams already have their divisions wrapped up and a combined record of 32-12). Ā Pederson if I recall and Wentz both arrived with the Eagles together. Ā So itā€™s not like the Eagles brought in Pederson to SAVE Wentz.

Ā

Second, I didnā€™t even mention Coach McDermott so exactly how is it a crusade against him? Ā I said the best thing for Rosen and Darnold would be to get an Offensive Minded Head Coach. Ā I am more convinced that having a strong defensive minded head coach is very important for Allen and this team right now. Ā Plus...McDermott has had enough success to not even warrant any thought of coaching change right now.

Ā

Come on now.
