Four if we include Washington and Baltimore. But they only play each other once every four years. Cross state teams like Texans/Cowboys, Steelers/Eagles, Dolphins/Bucs. Ned Flanders
I'm old enough to remember when there were SIX preseason games and a 14 game regular season. Seems wacky today. I'm all for ZERO PS games, but in no way would I favor an 18 game regular season; that's just too much on the players.

More roster spots would not help salaries. Salary cap would just be spread out over more contracts.(of course in the negotiations to increase roster players would be a request for increased salary cap from NFLPA)  I agree increased rosters is a no brainer to reduce injury etc etc...….. just make the PS full roster players, full min NFL salary and benefits etc etc....this could/would hopefully stop the rush to get players back before they are quit ready. Especially with head injuries. And spread out the playing time a little to reduce exposure to injuries also.
Charles Romes
Without a QB incubator league feeding the NFL you need a long preseason. Â I like the long preseason and would not mind if it was longer for better player development. Â I also liked the pro bowl after the Super Bowl as it helped the weaning process. Preseason in every sport is incredibly boring When I lived in Buffalo, I was an Indians fan because I was a huge Bisons fan. So I actually loved watching Spring Training games because by the 4th or 5th inning, it was mostly guys that would end up in Buffalo. And the first few preseason hockey games can be fun. There seem to be more fights because as long as they don't cause serious injury, there's no real consequences.  But Football definitely sucks. The first game I enjoy, just because football is finally back, even if it means nothing. But by the 4th game its just kinda pointless.

Dan
The problem with preseason is all the fans and 24/7 sports writers want football so much... THEY.. treat it like real football games.  Coaches and players, however, realize its still just practice games and approach it as such.    Take the games off TV and stop the 24/7 analysis of every player's performance in them, and the number of games comes back to what matters... How much time does a coach need to evaluate his players and get the team ready for a season?  I would guess, 4 games is about right.
RyanC883
I actually like 4. If coaches manage these games well, they get the starters brief game-speed action, while getting backups and borderline players valuable reps, for either here or elsewhere.

Koko78
I would want to know how many games a coaching staff actually needs to evaluate talent to get to a 53-man roster and to get the starters acclimated to getting hit again. While I can respect wanting as much information as possible on the 40ish guys they cut each year (in case they need to bring some back during the season or the following season), they can't really need 4 preseason games to do so. Â I would think 2 preseason games and an annual joint practice/scrimmage with rotating teams (that aren't facing each other that season) would be enough. The only problem I'd see with that (and this isn't my problem, so much as the owners), is if the stars aren't playing, they can't charge full price for game tickets like they do now and attendance would be even worse for preseason than it is now. wagon127
I kind of gave up on being upset about how many preseason games there are. I simply don't watch them. This year is different, because of the QB competition. I really don't consider football season starting until September anyways.
