Anyone else besides me NOW wish we had given up a lot to get to 3?

Recommended Posts

Maybe I am just fatigued with this painstaking lead up to the draft.  Maybe I am just annoyed that the jets WILL get one of the top 2 or 3 qbs in the draft.

However, I have gone from being fine with not over paying to get to 3 to...well...i'd feel better if we got to three, even knowing we may have to, or could have, rolled with the Giants for 2.

We'll soon see.  I have enjoyed aspects of this year's draft, but I need the first round to be over and Thursday can't come soon enough.

Go Bills.

if regrets over not getting to 3 already well covered, Mods please feel free to lock.

Ive asked this question a couple times already -

Can anyone name a team that has traded up to #3 that far in advance before the draft? (6 weeks). I can't name one.

Theres a reason it's almost unheard of...

I still think it was a somewhat reckless trade by the Jets. They have no clue what will happen at 1 and 2. They may have given up all that just to get QB 3 on their board.

Are they really in love with 3 separate QBs in this draft? What are the chance 3 QBs in this class are worth that haul of picks?

Seems like a desperate move by a desperate GM IMO. I'd much rather have my GM identify their guy, not take a random shot at any one of 3 QBs.

There are no "top 2 or 3" QB's in this draft.  The order in which a QB is selected pays no bearing on his eventual outcome, so, although, someone may get the top projected guys, they may not get THE guy..  or GUYS.. ;)

Could turn out that the best QB when the dust settles is taken by someone in the 3rd, or 4th round, we never know.

If I have said it once I have said it a thousand times- it doesn’t matter that the Jets don’t know who is going 1 & 2...obviously they like 3 QBs, which makes their trade up an excellent one- period.

No. Jets moving up that early was a panic plain and simple. Where they were sitting they likely would still have had one of the Big 4 drop in their lap or on draft Day could have had a good shot of sliding to 4 to get their guy ahead of Denver if that's what they feared. And for way less.

Being at 12 with the picks we have we have a shot to move up and get the QB we want or improve our roster greatly.

The Jets blinked, the Bills didn't.  Only way the Jets trade makes sense is if they like 3 guys, and were OK with any of them.  Which could be true, since all these guys have positives and negatives.

It's been talked about numerous times, the colts didn't want to move out of the top10 when the trade happened.

No blinking happened.

The Jets had an asset we couldn't offer, a pick in the top 10.

Could it bite them in the rump if we get to #2?

Maybe, but that's only if they had a specific top2 QBs and miss them both.

They probably have 3 guys rated roughly equally, and rolled the dice that nobody would leap frog them/Giants don't take a QB, giving them their pick of 2 out of top 3.

Nope...their move up was brilliant imo because look at the situation the bills are in...no matter how u try to spin it, it is just jealousy, plain and simple... but I don’t blame u for being jealous- I am too... but I’m not going to pretend it was a bad move just because it wasn’t the Bills that got the pick.

It's quite possible that Indy wasn't interested in trading down to 12, no matter what we offered.

I could be mistaken but I dont think Bills had even moved to 12 yet when Jets and Colts traded...dont think 21 and 22 and next years 1 would have been enough for colts to over look 3 2nds and only a 3 spot move down...

Rookie mistake on Beane’s part

Indy’s GM has said repeatedly that they did not want to trade out of the top 10 but trading back to 6 was a great fit for them because the players they were targeting would likely still be available at 6, but not at 10.

Not sure what you expected Beane to do about that.  If Indy didn’t want to buy what the Bills had to sell, that’s that.  Beane can’t make him trade.

No, it means that the Jets love at least two, possibly 3 QB's equally..  2 if they are gambling that the Giants are not selecting one..  I can see valuing 2 QB's but NOT 3 equally..

Not to be rude, but just because that’s what you see doesn’t mean that’s what the Jets see...everyone evaluates differently...so if that’s what they think then the move was perfect for them.

Not being rude, this is an opinion forum, however, for what you said to be true, logic dictates that the Jets would be in love with 3 QB's equally, - or- like I said, at least two, gambling that the Giants were puffing..

I disagree...they may like them equally but they don’t have to...they could just like them similarly, where it doesn’t matter to them which they get...they would still be happy... they could feel the drop off isn’t that much from one to the next.

I agree about the Colts.  They did not want to fall out of the top ten, so our offer wasn't attractive enough.  But I would say the Jets blinked if they have a guy they really want.  Because that guy may be gone.

The more I try to read the tea leaves the more I think the Bills do not necessarily think that there is one guy in this draft that is the can't miss QB they have to have.  I think they'd be really happy with any of the top 4, and fairly happy with anyone in the top 6.  So they may not move at all.

Sure, I guess. If you believe there is no difference between the top 3 QBs and that each one of them is worth 4 top 49 picks (I don't, but I am not a professional scout).

How many drafts have there been over the last 40+ years where 3 QBs at the top of the draft have been worth that type of trade up? 1983. 2004. I can't think of any more off hand. And only in 2004 did the best 3 QBs go in the top 10, and as the first 3 QBs off the board. In 1983 three QBs went in between Kelly and Marino (Blackledge went before Kelly, and Eason + O'Brien went before Marino)

Odds are are pretty damn high against the top 3 QBs in this class being worth 4 top picks, and against the best 3 QBs being the first 3 off the board.

None of this matters because if the Jets consider it good value that’s all that matters...if they end up with a franchise qb then it will be a steal...plus they only gave up 2nd round picks... not like it was 3 first rounders.

I agree.

I read that they are comfortable with any of the top 4 QBs in this draft.

I also read that Maccagnan sold Woody Johnson on doing whatever it took to get one of the top 4 QBs in this class over a year ago. There is no way that they had properly scouted and vetted those QBs when they put this plan into action over a year ago.

That is another reason why I say the trade up to 3 was a desperate move. I feel that Maccagnan's job likely depended on landing one of the top 4 QBs in this draft class.

The Bills and Jets were not dealing from position of equality.  The Bills could not "match" the Jets, as they did not have the #6 to offer.  If the Colts didn't want a QB it's highly likely the player they'd have nabbed at three will still be there at six.  If so, the Colts just got all those picks from the Jets effectively for free.  Brilliant, and simply not something the Bills could offer.

As for the trade itself, the Jets overpayed.  They've panicked this offseason, loading up on QBs and trading away their future for yet another one.  They're throwing darts at a dartboard and praying something sticks.  They overpayed, and during a draft where there isn't a clear cut top QB prospect.  They paid too much and pulled the trigger too soon.  Beene has a plan, and he's not about to blow all our picks carelessly.  Trust the process and don't panic.  If you don't like what you see in the draft, then consider panicking.  Personally, I'm happy to finally feel like we have a GM who has a plan, rather then just impulse shopping like we have been for a decade or two.

It's not jealousy in the least. Yes, at the end of the day it will likely work out for them and that's super. They will get someone they want at a higher price then if they stood still and watched the draft unfold and make a deal according to what happened.

In all likelihood, they will come away with Baker Mayfield imo. And that's a good return. Then we all get to see how the ensuing Baker Vs NY Media plays out. That should be entertaining to watch.

I don't disagree.

I think the Jets just said "well we need to get one of the top 3 guys, and if we sit at 6 we might not even get one of the top 4" so they went for it.

I liked their move for them.

It was a good move.

This is my feeling exactly.  At 3, you may get the 3rd player on your wish list.  Not worth that kind of risk.
