On thing I really hope if we DO draft a QB

Recommended Posts

Regardless of who it is.

BE PATIENT

There really are only a couple of guys that could hit the ground starting in this draft and even they could use some time holding a clip board.... but if the bills brain trust decides to throw them in and let them learn can we please not immediately look to replace them if they should start rough?   They will be a ROOKIE.....they are gonna make mistakes.....throw interceptions.....not make the right read.....not win comeback games immediately down by 14......

but

If we are patient with them they WILL get it done in time.

EJ, Losman, Capt. Checkdown come to mind.

One thing I really hope happens when we draft a QB but am smart enough to know is a pipe dream: Bills fans need to give the player time and give him a chance. They need to remember that, as someone said on Twitter: football fans are GUESSING at which QBs will be good based on an extremely limited set of data and footage. They are PROJECTING which QBs COULD be good in the league if all goes well. GMs and scouts have a lot more information and expertise than fans, so fans need to not freak out and jump off a bridge if the guy they prefer based off of 3 Youtube videos doesn't get selected. Give the kid time, give him a chance, and have faith that maybe our scouts and front office aren't complete goofballs just because their (professional, much more well informed) opinion on a player is different than your (amateur, often uninformed) opinion.

The rookie QB most likely won't start, so it's AJ we'll have to be patient with, at least in the immediate term.  A lot also depends on who else McD and Beane can get via draft and FA to fill in other holes on the team.

But...but...but Peterman has been working with Tom House. Can't look past that guy either.

I agree 100%.

However, there has to be forward progress.

The problem with many fans is that they let their hope that someone will improve get in the way of seeing the reality that they will not improve.

Expecting a rookie or a second-year guy to come in and light it up isn't practical.

But expecting a QB who, after a few years of starting, still isn't showing significant signs of improvement to suddenly "get it," isn't practical, either.

Making mistakes, throwing interceptions, taking stupid sacks .... sure - that stuff happens.  But if it keeps happening, it's better to recognize it early and address it (bench his ass) sooner rather than later.

The plug should have been pulled on EJ after year two.  On Tyrod after year one.

Patience is an absolute must.  But being too patient does nothing good.

i think we, as fans (most of us), will show patience for the rook. as long as he shows flashes of greatness, we will be just fine. we know this team has holes to fill, and needs to surround the qb with more talent. we also know that it will take a bit of time to get acclimated to the NFL. i am a Billiever, and i trust the process.

I think the plug was pretty much pulled after 20 games.  He only had 3 starts after that.  2 were because of the starter being injured.

How should we have handled that differently?

Whoever we are about to draft STILL hasn't won a game, thrown for 300 yards or a TD. He is CLEARLY a bust. He should be cut now.

Agreed. People must be bored of people saying this, but who are the best QBs in the game? Brees, Rodgers and Brady? They all spent a year on the bench, or more. As did Carson Palmer, Philip Rivers and Kirk Cousins. It ain't a bad thing. It doesn't guarantee anything either, of course, but it does give guys time to ingrain good mechanical habits if they need upgrades and to figure out how to study film and how to start to read defences.

Same (mostly) irrational fans and press so likely same issues. Pitchforks being sharpened and oil being bought.

Jumping off bridges is NOT bad if it results in less Chicken Littles .... you need to break some eggs to make an omelet.

One of my favorite novelists, Georges Bernanos, said that it would require God at the final judgement to clarify "why so many imbeciles."  Unfortunately, the wise are always few.  Can't let the irrationality of the mass of men deter one from pursuing excellence -- in this case, drafting a potential franchise qb.

And threw 28 INT's.

And he showed so many glimpses of greatness that the W/L record and poor stats were readily overlooked. That's going to be the key if we draft a guy and start him right away. If not, he's going to get roasted by the hot pocket fan base. Which is completely unfair and stupid, really.
