I have, but does that mean AJM will?

How many games has he started?

that said, I don’t think he’s the kind of QB that will put up 250-300 yds/g, but he can win them games and seems to have the ability to make  comebacks, unlike TT.

All your years of watching football and you never seen a player improve?

Dude. The point is.... you cannot look back on what you’ve seen from him and make statements about the pass game improving. We can only evaluate what he’s done and with a better supporting cast he didn’t do anything more than what we’ve seen. That’s the bottom line. There was nothing seen there to say it would be an improvement on what we just had other than his clutch play in the playoffs. That’s always nice to see. And obviously something Taylor lacked BIG TIME.

Maybe he improves. I would hope he has over the last 2 seasons. But it’s not a given he’s an upgrade.

We'll see.  To my eye, he doesn't look like the kind of QB that the Bills can rely on to win them games on a consistent basis.  Funny that no other team believed what you do.

I’m not saying he will, but you are saying he won’t.... AJ is smart kid who has played his position well in his time on the field at college and stepping of the bench in the NFL. He was surrounded by talent but he did his job. Hopefully he can help this team, until he proves he can’t i’m not gonna throw him under the bus like yourself.

I'm saying he'll have to show improvement, but I'm not expecting much based on his average skill set.  That's not throwing him under anything. It's a realsitic expectation based on the kind of player he is.

One word answers from you does not serve well for a self proclaimed knowledgeable guy.

Oh and use your words and not a tweet from someone else.

Thanks

Further define average skill set please.

Average skill set is Tyrod Taylor.

Because he’s yet to have an opportunity to play an entire season, so he is still an unknown quantity. The issue isn’t that he’s going to lead a franchise to the Super Bowl, rather can he get them to the playoffs? With an improved D, I think his small sample size shows it’s possible.

Btw, the Bills are an NFL team...

So was Garoppolo, yet he scored a big deal from the 49ers while McCarron settled for backup money with the Bills after no team pursued him as a starting option.  There's a reason for that whether you want to acknowledge it or not.

26 thinks he knows all about NFL QB’s.   If their name isn’t Tom Brady or Jimmy Garoppolo or Tyrod Taylor then they aren’t any good.

BAM.   Nailed it!!!!

The AMMOUNT a young QB gets paid does not prove he’s a good QB.

Kirk Cousins will get paid more than Jimmy this year and for the next 2 seasons  (cuz you can and should ignore the guarantee for injury money)

Again, the question is NOT whether AJ is a franchise QB, it's "are the Bills a playoff team with AJ?"  In my initial post I said they needed some help at other positions, but if they do that, then I think he's good enough to get them to the playoffs.  If he isn't better than Tyrod, than you'd be right.

what's funny, is he doesn't know it all. sure, McCarron signed for back up money but I'm looking at it as he did so knowing he has a chance at the starter position and could do well enough to remain the starter while (1-2 seasons) grooming the rookie? then when rookie is ready to take the reins he may have gained some good trade value and  have another chance to start elsewhere for better money?

it's easier for some to look at the dark side rather then the bright side but the fact is he, like his predecessor, sat on the bench for 4 (5) years and then was given an opportunity with a new team to prove himself. my gut tells me he will fare much better than said predecessor?

I'd take the opinion of a coach to heart more thren some message board know it all, any day of the week.

Buffalo's getting a winner,' NFL coach says of AJ McCarron

"I think Buffalo's getting a winner,"

The Buffalo Bills' acquisition of quarterback AJ McCarron in free agency has the stamp of approval from at least two NFL coaches.

Cincinnati coach Marvin Lewis called McCarron "a joy to coach" and "an uplifting player" while with the Bengals.

"He's what you want, you know?" Lewis told the Buffalo News about McCarron at the NFL's annual meeting this week. "You want a guy who always feels he's better than he is. That's part of being a quarterback in the NFL. You've got to have that kind of self-confidence where, when you walk into that huddle or that meeting room, everyone feels good about you. ...

"AJ's always been a really confident player in himself and his abilities. He's had a great deal of success, and he believes that he will always continue to have success. That's part of him."

"I think Buffalo's getting a winner," Cleveland Browns coach Hue Jackson told the Buffalo News, "a guy that will come early, stay late, work extremely hard, loves football, loves winning more than losing, can't stand to lose. He knows how to elevate his teammates."

Jackson served as Cincinnati's offensive coordinator during McCarron's first two NFL seasons.

Also.   AJ became a FA at the tail end of not after all the QB slots were filled.

Something else that is funny.

How little did TT sign for again when he first signed with Buffalo???

$14 mil?

I am cautiously optimistic about this kid like you. I think he has enough years under his belt riding the pine to be mature enough to start. I think he has the talent, and the moxie. I believe this because of his playoff performance against the steelers. However, he is an unknown quantity. That is why i am CAUTIOUSLY optimistic.

As for the above quote, all I can say is that is what they said about Tyrod...

I responded with a comparison of Garoppolo because you claimed he's a unknown quantity.  I would argue that he's known for what QB traits and physical skills he has irrespective of the five games he's played as a starter in the NFL.  In any case, he may get the opportunity to show growth depending upon who the Bills draft next month.

From what McDermott has shown he isn’t a guy to start a rookie right away unles the starter had 3 or 4 poor games in a months span like Tyrod did.

For the record. AJM won his arbitration case well before Free Agency.  He simply misjudged the market with the thought he'd be in demand.   He wasn't.

AJ McCarron wins case against Bengals, now unrestricted FA

By DANIEL RAPAPORT February 15, 2018

Quarterback AJ McCarron has won his grievance against the Bengals and now enters the offseason as an unrestricted free agent.

NFL Network's Ian Rapoport first reported the league's ruling.

who really cares if he wasn't in demand? the bills picked him up for what they must of felt was a good reason and not solely based on the size of his contract. trying to belittle his opportunity because other teams did not pick him up, is irrelevant since he is now a buffalo bill with an opportunity ahead of him. rather than find every reason why he shouldn't be the starter, I instead will pull for him in hopes he succeeds?

At the end of the day he is what he is. McCarron can be a smart, tough, game manager that can keep you afloat for a month. It was a good signing at the price and with the need. He’s a decent bridge option and a really good #2. His skill set is limited though. Anyone that expects him to come in and light up the scoreboard hasn’t watched a lot of McCarron. That’s not who he is. He’s actually a poor man’s Tyrod in a lot of ways. He has less physical skills but a lot of the same “won’t lose you games” approach. He has won a lot in his life playing that style. McCarron was a fantastic addition at that price but isn’t likely the long-term guy.

Good assessment.  I have said he's a decent option as a bridge/backup.  I'm glad the Bills signed him, but I look forward to the draft with the hope of acquiring the future franchise QB.

From a purely financial standpoint, this signing was a mixture of pure genius and grand larceny because of the stupid $$$ QB's are getting on the open market. If the kid pans out, it will be one of the best FA signings of the decade

The way I see things, it's a win for both him and the Bills.  The Bills get at least a bridge/backup QB and he gets a chance to compete for a starting job.

Is Daboll smart enough to get Case Keenum or nick foles production?

A few few things would have to happen that are possible in order to get us to the playoffs. Zay Jones bounces back and becomes a nice wr. Draft stud mlb, slot wr, ot, dt. Don’t have to be studs but nice productive guys. Similar to Dawkins who was a second round guy.

So we need great coaching and great drafting. Impossible without

Again, he averaged 208 yards per game in CIN with a great receiving corps which is something that we do not have in BUF.  Go get your hopes up too high.

A young kid playing in his first four games, one being a playoff game. Probably not much worse than Peyton's first four games. We shall see.

That's a pretty weak excuse with that being his 2nd season on a stacked offensive team and the prevelance of QBs playing early these days in the NFL.  Wait, did you just mention Peyton Manning in reference to AJM?

It may have been his second season, but it was still his first few games that we are talking about. They won two of those games and would have probably won the Playoff game had not his RB fumbled while trying to use clock near the end of the game. From what I remember, the Pittsburgh pass rush was all over him the whole game. Tough position for a kid in his first playoff game.

No need to be snarky re: my mentioning of Peyton Manning. I was just trying to show an analagous situation regarding even future Hall of Fame QBs. Of course, I thing that you knew that.

A "young kid" who played okay. Nothing snarky about it regarding the Manning comment because it's not a realistic comparison to make.

Oh so he does read my posts.

The QB’s taken before him were starters at one time were they not?

How many backups FA’s were signed to be a potential starter before AJ?

New toy Garappolo doesn’t count as he wasn’t a FA

Tough question to answer.  My gut is telling me we're looking at 9-7 again...but what I'm really unsure of is if it will be enough to get in.  I...I'm going to say 'yes', and rather then backing in, I have a hunch a key Week 17 victory, perhaps an upset, gets them in.

Last year's team overachieved, yes.  But let's not overlook the positives of that.   Be it coaching, heart, or a combination of the two, they did more then looked possible on paper.  Nothing saying with the same coach and changing culture that doesn't happen again and this team pulls a few more surprises.

Tyrod is an anomoly, the ultimate baseline.  He is a die that only rolls '3' or '4'.  He kept some games close, but when the game neared the end if we were behind he couldn't give us the high rolls we needed.  He took us as far as be could, and will do well in Cleveland, where 8-8 would be adored.  We hit TT's ceiling, and when Cleveland finally does, their rookie should be ready.  That being said, we don't know what AJ will bring.  There is a very limited body of work to go by, and it doesn't include Bills' players, coaches, or schemes.  What he does give is a chance to be better then TT and the risk of being worse.

If nothing else, I'm hoping he's willing to throw deep.  Keep in mind McCoy was running uphill.  Having a star running back and a QB that only throws short makes defense easier.  You put eleven players, a couple cheerleaders and an assistant coach in the box and dare TT to throw deep.  Hopefully AJ, if he's playing, will at least stretch out the D and make the offense less predictable.

For every game we barely won thanks to turnovers or such, there were games we barely lost, such as the Panthers and Bengels.  I think we're going to gain and lose ground in equal measure this year, but our long-term outlook will look better.  And, if nothing else, I think it will be entertaining.

Yes. Leslie Frazier is a great DC and the coaching by McD was very good too, but he needs to work on clock mgmnt skills. No HC did more with less talent.

Assuming we don't get one of the big 4 QBs, are we a playoff team with A.J. ? Or are we the 2017 Browns and the #1 seed to get Drew Luck, Jacob Eason, or Jarrett Stidham next year ?

Is it worth even using a draft pick on Rudolph or Jackson ?

Yes. This team believes in itself. It willed itself to 9 wins without an offense and a leaky defense.  With the additions with the number of draft picks this team does have it in them to go into the playoffs again even with AJ.
