You guys do know Rob Ryan is on the coaching staff now, right?

Great point!

Simple answer is - No.

I am biased because I personally find high end steakhouses to be boring. They are all pretty much the same tired cookie cutter concept and menu. Who cares?

I kind of agree and kind of don't. I prefer little ethnic restaurants to fancy steakhouses.

But some steakhouses - like Tom Colicchio's Heritage Steak in Vegas - are special.

I don't think a steakhouse is a great investment. Yikes.

Mr. Boyst62,

While I normally agree with this sentiment, this PARTICULAR steakhouse is important. Big job for my company.

So excited to learn who's behind it!

That place was SO good!! I thought that it was a lot better than the Chophouse.

EB Greens is SO good!! The place is still open in the Hyatt building and much better than the highly overrated Chop House. Not as good as Russell's though, but that's not in the city. As far as SEAR goes, it's in the same building as the Embassy Suites, so they are going to get a lot of business people to dine there as well. So, I think it will succeed.

Side note, since I mentioned restaurants in hotels. A stone's throw away another new high end restaurant, Patina, will be in the brand new Westin Hotel which also houses Delaware North. The hotel will be managed by a recently returning Buffalonian, who managed the Waldorf Astoria in NYC...

Buffalo has a lot of good restaurants. It's great to see more opening!

I wonder if this new steakhouse will be as "high end" as Sestak - Maguire's was?

$5.75 for lobster? Who eats there? The Rockefellers?

I don't know if it's the best location. True it's just a block off Chippewa but it's a fairly blah area.

Stayed at the Embassy there late April and one of the employees told us about the restaurant. I was happy to hear Fred and Moorman were involved but surprised about McGee. Should be a nice place.

McGee lived at the Avant when he played here.

Buffalo can't support 2 high end steak houses? I live on The Mississippi Gulf Coast with a population of about 350,000. There are about 8-10 high end steak houses that all do very well. Seems strange that Buffalo can't support 2.

Well the Gulf Coast is more touristy than Buffalo. That said SEAR isn't far from the medical campus.

my uncle worked USDA meat inspection in wny. Despite not a large herd number, the beef packaging business is strong in the area.

And, at least for me, Tourist Dollars are like Monopoly Money, like it's almost no good for anything once the game is over! (I'm trying to improve my tourist skills, but's that's the way it usually goes.)

Buffalo already has 2 high end steakhouses in the city in EB Greens & Chophouse. IMO EB Greens is much better. Chophouse is overrated. I think they both do very well though. I think if it is done right, no reason why this one can't be successful either.

I don't know, they have a pretty strong group. The restaurateur has a following and they have the right people involved. This isn't a kitchen being run by someone's cousin. The have the guy from Oliver's involved.

I've never been to Oliver's, but you talking as if it's a good thing that the guy from there is involved gives me some hope. I've been to Creekview and it kinda sucks. Overpriced TJIFriday's level food with a very good location. I know it's the same guy, but if Oliver's is good maybe there's a chance for SEAR. That'd be nice because I do like the sound of dry aged waygu steaks.

Creekview isn't very good. I think that this guy recently took that over though (I could be wrong). Oliver's is one of the best few restaurants in the city.

Yeah, sometimes these guys get involved with these endeavors with no clue what they are doing. I too have hope that they involved someone that definitely knows what he's doing.

A little bit off topic but former Bill Angelo Crowell has done really well with franchise restaurants.

A much smarter investment for former athletes, IMO.

Think Peyton Manning and Papa John's.

sometimes the sexy pick (steakhouse, music business, fashion, etc...) just doesnt knock it out like the blue collar (fast food, gas stations etc...)

drew brees does jimmy johns here in nola, instead of competing in the high end space.

I would hope The entire city of Buffalo could support more than 1 steak house?!

As a Chicagoan, I almost fell out of my chair when the notion of a city not supporting more than one steakhouse was introduced. We have high end steakhouses inside high end steakhouses. I'm not kidding.

Oliver's is one of the best few restaurants in the city.

Few? There are many good restaurants...The Left Bank, Hutch's, Tempo, Tappo, Bacchus, Trattoria Aroma, Kuni's, EB Green's, Ristorante Lombardo, Osteria 166, Martin Cooks, Sinatra's....and there are many more I have heard good things about, but haven't tried yet...Such as The Lodge, Big Ditch, Sea Bar, Buffalo Proper, Rue Franklin....I'm getting hungry, must be close to lunch...

Also, BOSS - Buffalo's Original Steak & Seafood, is another high-end steak house in Buffalo (hertel avenue). I have heard good things, but i have never been there....

I'm sorry for the confusion. I wasn't suggesting that there are "just a few" I was suggesting that it is "one of the best few." In other words it's probably a top 10 restaurant.

If all for more steakhouses.

Chophouse is grossly overrated IMO, as places like Russell's, Western Door (though that's in the Seneca Niagara Casino), and EB Green's have better fare at equal (or lesser) prices.

I'll definitely try SEAR when it opens.

Side note: I'm finally getting out to Aro Tapas in Williamsville next Friday--cannot wait.

LOL I was just talking about it this morning at our production meeting. I'm more conservative and traditional in my choices. That said I wouldn't go back. My son picked it out. Spanish food............I'm like what's that? Not Mexican? You order a series of plates from $10 to $40 each. They advise 3-4 plates per person. The plates are VERY small, all except for the largest head of cauliflower I've ever seen served to one person. God bless you if you enjoy, just not my style at all

Keep some change for a stop at Mighty after you get out

Same here Big Cat. I can name at least two dozen, without even thinking about it too much.

Kind of thought that's what you meant, but it was a good reason to list some great restaurants in the area!!!!

As mentioned above, Black & Blue is very good. The suburbs have a lot of great steak places as well...

I generally am a huge fan of tapas, because I like variety and pay absolutely zero attention to cost (with twin 3-year olds, we dine out so infrequently that dropping big dollars on a meal is no big deal).

I'm more interested in the quality (and the bar specials)...and yeah, I'll post a review afterward.

There are more than one or two good steak houses in Buffalo.

Try Black & Blue off sheridan headed towards transit.

great steak, manhattans, and awesome wine cellar.

I'm not a huge Black & Blue guy. Good steaks for sure, but nothing outside of what I'd expect at any decent steakhouse.

I haven't been to BOSS yet, but that location is a good omen IMO--Fiamma was easily my favorite steak joint when it was open. $26 for a perfectly cooked 8-oz filet? You're joking.

Right now, I'd say that Russell's is probably my favorite. The steaks are excellent, and that Dinner For Two menu (which is poorly named since it's a menu grouping for one person) is easily the best deal in town. $39 for a soup/salad, 8-oz steak, side, and small dessert is highway robbery. You can drink an entire bottle of wine (get the Justin Cab) to your head and get out of there for less than $100/person.

Your description is the definition of a tapas restaurant, hence the name, Aro Topas.
