He told them that they've got more work to do than the offense in the grand scheme of things. He didn't make the right call to win that game. He made the right call to win a championship. By choosing the defense, Belicheck told his team that it's more important that they get experience in a pressure cooker. He trusts Brady in that situation more than he trusts his defense. Brady and the offense don't need the practice as much as the defense. Belicheck put them out on the field in the near perfect simulation to a big spot in the playoffs and/or ultimately the Super Bowl. And it truly was genius. Belicheck knows more about coaching in the NFL than probably any man alive. He might know more about it than any man ever has. He's laughing you. The New York media makes headlines insisting that he screwed up. The joke is on them. Do you really think he's worried about beating the Jets in week 16 with a 12-2 record? Do you think he doesn't know that the Bengals and Broncos were going to do him a favor the next night? If the Broncos win, which is probably what he figured - they have more on the line, and the AJ McCarron era was going to be meet by a very good defense that was playing for keeps - then the Patriots would control their own destiny for homefield advantage. Even if the Bengals won, they may have to play at Cincinnati in the AFC Championchip game. Who would you pick in that one?? Yeah, Bill too. The Hoodie is not going to reveal that he had bigger plans in his decision than just the Jets game. That would be mentioning things that could take place weeks from now. We know he doesn't do that. He said what he needed to after the game. And the media and fans ate out of his hand once again. Do you really think there is anybody on the planet that better understands winning Super Bowls?? Let alone people in the Media? So he lost the game. He honestly couldn't care less. He saw the big picture and prepared his team for what's ahead. He knew the opportunity that lay before him and he capitized in it, in a way that once again reassures that he's peerless. He knows all. He sees all. And everyone in that organization is a lucky SOB, cause my money will once again be on Belicheck and Brady against the field in the upcoming tournament. Odds are they will be the most prepared because of things like what he did for them in the Jets game. The real in game practice session was on the Jets time, and nobody even knows it. Priceless. And risk having Brady not even touch the ball the remainder of the game (which is exactly what happened)? The OT rules still need to be worked on IMO. The idea of one team not getting the chance to even touch the ball on offense in OT doesn't seem right - especially since there is still time on the clock for OT. I was expecting the Jets to stop the initial drive, make a few passes to Marshall & Decker to set up a field goal to win. The game ended as a defensive struggle. Even Pats final TD required that the RB use offensive pass interference while the entire Oline can be seen holding the Ds facemasks over their eyes to prevent a passrush or batted ball (at this point in the game, Pats had zero penalties called against them). The reason the defense sucked balls this year is quite simple. If the D did great, everyone would say it wasn't Rex, he inherited the D. Agreed. And it was so painfully long, I couldn't get through it all. Two things spell PATS fan in that one: 1. Using the word genius when your coach clearly lost you any chance you may have had to win the game. Hint: keeping your HOF qb on the bench is the OTHER team's gameplan you dope. 2. Not really understanding that the loss threatens homefield for the AFC championship game. The Pats will lose on the road to any decent team right now, that coin toss may have been their season. I think they had about 30 seconds from their own 20 and they never attempted a play. I thought for sure they would pass at least 2 times to see if they could get near midfield.
