Doug Whaley deserves a ton fo credit....in particular for S. Henderson

Recommended Posts

He gave up that sack to WIllie Young of the Bears and I was concerned going into yesterdays game against Cameron Wake......

Then you never heard Wake's name the whole game

Then Willie Young comes out and destroys the RT he is playing against last night on Sunday Night Football

Doug Whaley needs to take a bow on this one.......he might have gotten the BEST OFFENSIVE TACKLE IN THE DRAFT with a 7th round pick.......

That is some fine GM work there

I heard his name twice.

Once when the announcers mentioned how they hadn't said his name yet, and once when Seantrel shoved him into oblivion on Spiller's 47 yard run.

So far, Henderson, Graham, and Dixon have been great picks/signings by Whaley. Henderson has been playing above anyone’s expectations of him. Graham has been the Bills best CB throughout two games. Dixon had a great run against the Bears last week and a blocked punt yesterday.

I like the fact that we're back to having dedicated special teams guys. Sure, I won't be thrilled if there's an injury and we have Chris Hogan playing downs at WR but I'm still happier to have him than TJ Graham overall.

Same goes for Boobie Dixon. Bryce Brown is the more promising rusher, but Dixon provides so much in the oft-forgotten third phase.

I say the same about Kiko...Getting him back next year will be like drafting an impact player in the first round...

Holy Cow! So we've gone from no first round picks to TWO! This is awesome!

(I'm telling myself the same things)

For Henderson specifically it was less about recognizing his talent (which every team was aware of) and more about willingness to take a risk on him due to off the field concerns (if you consider a flyer on a 7th rounder a big risk)

I really liked the move when the BILLS took Whaley as their Assistant GM, but have absolutely believed in him as the GM since he was promoted and all of the moves he's made...I certainly did, and to a lesser extent still do, have my reservations about EJ Manuel and much has been debated about whether EJ was DW's decision, or Nix's decision, or a combination of those two, but other than still having some questions about EJ, DW has been incredible for this organization. The moves, and the lack thereof as someone earlier referred to Byrd, has shown he's willing to make the difficult choices...Byrd is a good player, and I'm sure they wish they could have kept him, but good GM's, see Ozzie Newsome and Ted Thompson, know to value *POSITIONS* over players when it comes to doling out the big money...and Safety just isn't a position you over-invest in...LT, QB, MLB, DE and CB are all positions you place the greatest amount of money and value in, with some other key pieces such as Center and WR to some extent as well...but players also have to understand that you can't give everyone all the money they want, which is why football is so fantastic. There is a limit and creativity within that limit to some extent, but it produces parity and DW has done exceptionally well thus far...I hope he can continue the job he's done, b/c like many others I think he is crucial to the future of the BILLS' success.

Kiko may have to earn his starting job back the way Preston Brown is playing.

Can't agree with that at all. Kiko is a starter as soon as he's back to full health. He's a perfect WLB in the Schwartz scheme. I believe Brown would be the starting MLB if the Bills don't sign Spikes to an extension.

Agreed, but I also think the BILLS approach has had something to do with as well. Not just the coaching, but also the approach the FO took with him when they told him, this is probably your last chance to get it right and then surrounding him with good men and professionals to help him come along and develop not only his game, but his maturity....sometimes, for someone struggling with personal issues a change in scenery is a big help and can advance their personal change all the more...all conjecture at this point, and still a long season to go and hopefully many, many more successful seasons for Henderson with the BILLS, but early signs look promising....

I think the bills not signing Spikes is becoming less and less likely.......

Team captain.....is huge on this defense.......

Brown will have to remain the understudy for now

We should send some flowers or at least a nice card to the Pats for letting us have Brandon Spikes.

Brown has played 100% of snaps through two weeks. Spikes got 15 snaps yesterday. I love Spikes but I don't see a big offer in his future.

The guys was said to have first two round talent but was a huge question mark off the field. My only question was how did the guy last til the 7th round if that was true? I mean Aaron Hernandez was drafted in the 4th round with a similar scouting report. Makes me think that the Aaron Hernandez situation has scared off a lot of teams from taking these types of on field talent off field headache players. I would really like to see Cyrus kicked into guard. If he can hit at guard the O-line has a 4-5 year window to be stellar.

If Spikes is willing to be a running down specialist I could see him having a nice role on this team. But I am not sure that after this season (When the team will have Kiko coming back) if he is going to want to stay with a team that will only be using him as a prominent role player. I think the Bills would offer him solid money (2.5ish million a year) for multiple years to do that role. But another team with a huge need at LB might offer him more.

Which is interesting regarding his snap count, b/c I thought Spikes was a beast last week and was surprised when I kept looking for his number but didn't see him on the field...this explains why I didn't see him of course, but doesn't explain why he played so little...and just like with Robert Woods not getting a lot of catches, I wouldn't look at Spikes' absence as anything more than a game-plan...IMO of course

They stopped running the ball for the most part...which is why Spikes is here

If that's the reason, fair enough....I have no issue with how the game was called on any of the fronts, just wondered why...issue with Red Zone productivity is a concern, but they won and ultimately put points on the board, so for now as the Offense grows and gets better, I can live with it - not that I have any choice - but hope the Red Zone efficiency improves.

give Whaley the credit for making the pick but the area scout gets most of the credit as well...cant remember his name but there was an article about Whaley talking about scouting where they mentioned the scouts name

So far so good on the Henderson pick. It remains to be seen if Henderson can stay clear of the weed and other distractions. He can make a ton of money if he can....that is a sobering influence on some people (it would be on me) whaley, then, made the gutsy call, and is looking goooood at this point. But, time will tell.

I've said it before, Doug Whaley is our best shot at returning to glory. Many wanted to crap on him for the Byrd situation, however that's why he gets paid to put together a team an they don't.

let's do a quick rundown on whaley's offseason moves this week.

-byrd was part of a saints defense that has looked god awful.

-corey graham had a beast of a day for the second week in a row.

-dixon had a blocked punt

-spikes helped shut down forte last week, and i believe he helped shut down miller fter moreno went out.

-his first pick the one people, myself included, said he traded too much for had over 100 yards and a touchdown

-preston brown had 12 tackles

-randall johnson recovered the blocked punt

-henderson, a 7th round pick rookie, outplayed a probowler

-and my favorite, hughes was a constant presence and had a sack, while the man whaley traded him for couldn't crack the battered miami staring roster and is only noted for whiffing on cj's return.

so far, well done whaley

don't get me wrong, I'm thrilled about how's Henderson is working out. However, to miss on a 2nd round pick is huge.

Well Pegula will just have to fire the front office and cut the entire team, won't he?

When you get a minute show me a team that has consistently started every player it drafted in the first two rounds. I'll wait.

What about Kounjio? That's starting to look like a massive whiff

why? Henderson is clearly the better player at this point but way too early to say they whiffed on anyone especially a backup who hasnt seen the field yet in a real game

i dont know why they wouldnt try Kounjio at guard though with his strongsuit being run blocking
