Bills trade for Nyheim Hines

Hines is an upgrade at returner and receiving back.  With our running scheme he will make some chunk plays.  Compensation vs return its an A+ trade.  He is not CMC or Karmara but he didnt cost 5 picks either.  I think he is very underrated and his play fits Buffalos offense like a glove.

 Dude if he tears it up, no one will be happier than me. I have nothing against the guy and want him to succeed. I just don't see it as a big signing. Now if Cook wasn't on the team, I would feel the opposite way.

We’re likely never going to draft or pay a Josh Jacobs/Nick Chubb type.  
 

Hines and a 2nd year Cook give us two guys with speed and pass catching ability.  As long as Cook can develop pass pro ability, what else do we need?  
 

Sign or Draft a mid/late round big back for short yardage and let’s go.  

Exactly. Add in a bowling ball like Chris Rodriguez in the draft.

Hines can be a 3rd down back, slot receiver, returns punts and kicks at a high NFL level for what amounts to a 5th and Moss (who has been inactive). Not sure he replaces Isaiah Mckensie but he can do the similar sweep and gadget plays.  Hines being a back can be hidden better on those plays flexing out of the back field. Swiss army knife weapon that the front office has been looking for. Cooks started to show signs and may still get that role but now they know they can use that part of the playbook to diversify the run game.  

Being able to fill all those role and being a home run hitter is valuable asset for a deep team as insurance at a number of positions. Even if he only impacts as a Kick/Punt Returner it may be worth it considering the current state of the roster.

Feel much more confident in having 2 of the bills main backs between singletary Hines and cook vs singletary moss cook

In addition he has even lined out at outside WR and caught TD’s in that role.  Ability to send him out and create mismatches with his speed and RAC will be helpful for Josh.

If Hines takes away snaps from anybody, I could see it coming from 'Lil Dirty.    He has better hands and seems to be a good slot option.

Maybe this has been pointed out but clearly the Bills were not content with Moss & Cook should Singletary miss time.

The top backs in the league are so because they play on run-first teams where they get 20-23 carries per game vs. the 10 or 12 Singletary gets.

That said, I'm not sure why Cook isn't the Bills answer at RB2 though. 

 

Commentators, this team, makes it sound like a science project to figure out how to use him. 

 

The other night against Green Bay, they just handed it to him in the middle of the game (not in garbage time) and he was fine, ran for 35 yards. 

 

So I'm not understanding why the Bills have been so relentless in their determination to get another pass catching back. 

Plus, Singletary is a decent receiver too.

It just makes no sense to me long term…the dolphins spent pretty much all of their rebuild resources and then some to be the 4th or 5th best team in the conference.  I would’ve taken my shot with the picks odds are they are probably getting a better player than Chubb with one of those.  
 

stats wise they are probably gonna have to roll with tua now but if they spent some of that cap space and signed Lamar they’d be insane also.

I think part of the issue is we have had issues with putting together a strong run blocking OL. So we are "meh" at RB,  the IOL situation makes it worse, but pass blocking has been OK. Then we enter this viscous cycle of "we gotta get a guy to give us production in the run game". 

I do think this move will actually increase the number of touches Singletary gets, which I am a fan of. RB's have to get into rhythm. 

The "take McKenzie off the field take" is grating me a little. We already think Shakir should be getting more snaps than he is getting. Cook was drafted in the 2nd partially because of his ability to line up wide. This isn't actually a void that needs filling. (That's what she said)

I have no problem with the trade compensation, but I don't understand why the Bills would view Hines as better than Cook. 

 

Neither Singletary or Cook catch the ball all that often in this offense, and both Singletary and Cook are ~ 5 yards/carry back.

Hines is good and an upgrade over Cook as a pass catching back but is he going to supplant motor as the #1 back?  Singletary has been getting a lot of touches the past few games and has looked pretty good.  That said it improves the team a bit and the cost was almost nothing so sure, I'll take it.  Kamara would have been game changing but the cost would have been immense, and the saints probably wouldn't want to deal anyway.
