Holy crap Daboll interview

Pretty cool interview. The raw emotions and feelings are great, easily the single thing I love the most about this team. Everything is genuine.

That's certainly how it came across to me.

As much as everyone gives McDermott crap, he’s installed something like this. That word love has serious meaning there. He said in 2017 he was building the team, the culture, the organization on LOVE.

Then you hear one of his top lieutenants preaching that in a candid interview. It’s not just lip service people. The behavior, the attitude, the people... they’re all an extension of what McDermott is putting in place. Don’t let his steady hand fool you... he’s not dumb... he knows EXACTLY what he is doing.

I'd wondered sometimes if it's something McDermott and the players say and what it actually means to them.  We use the word "love" pretty cheaply sometimes in our modern world - "I love the coffee from this shop!  I love your purse!"

But it was pretty clear in that interview that it was 100% from the heart and indeed has serious meaning.

I’ve always been one to take happiness over money. A couple million in a solid position beats twice that as the HC of the Browns and waiting to get fired. I get wanting to be set for life, but NOT if it means being set up to fail in a miserable situation.  Money is nice, happiness is better. One does not buy the other.

I really don't think it's about money. I think the primary reason that almost all coaches want to be head coaches is that you want to get to the top of your profession. That's being a HC, not a coordinator. Dabol left NE to become an OC instead of a position coach. Likely he'll leave us too if it means being a HC. Yes, occasionally they will not take the position that is from a crappy organization, but I think in general they do, especially for the first opportunity. Plus, for most, opportunities don't necessarily keep coming around. Although he didn't get any looks last year, many thought Frazier should have been a HC candidate based on the Bills defense. Now, there's little chance he'd get considered based on this year's play. Same could happen to the O.

Although I hope he stays, I believe if he's given the opportunity, Dabol will be gone.

Absolutely.  Only 32 of those jobs in the whole wide world and who knows if you'll ever get tapped again.  Even if it's the Jets or the Jags you take the job.

Yeah, I get what you mean. I think the use of the word love in the context of a coffee shop is vastly different when using it to describe your feelings for another person.

Using that word in a locker room setting is difficult, it makes people vulnerable. These guys don't like being vulnerable... making them that way around each other is difficult... but once it is done... well you've seen the results first hand here in Buffalo. It can really create something special.

I'm sure you remember when McDermott had them up infront of the entire team sharing their personal stories... that's not a little throw away thing. That stuff is raw emotion... pure vulnerability. It's just stuff we aren't privy to.

Daboll's interview here is a good indicator of what it's like in that facility and how those guys behave around each other.

If you are purely in it for the quick money grab, sure. If it’s a long term career move, not so much. How long have the last 5 Brown’s coaches lasted on average? You can count that in months better than years or decades. They got that one deal, then were gone in no time. If I’m really that good, I wait for a path to success, not a check until I’m fired.

We’ve been advising our son in his 20’s to look long term. Don’t jump for a 20% raise, find the right path, look 20 years down the road.

This is the key point where I disagree with you.  It's a fickle and always-changing league.  You really don't know if you're going to get another opportunity if you turn down the first one.

That’s fine, we can disagree on that. I won’t take, or advise anyone else to take, a job where you are just positioned to fail. If I’m really prime head coaching material, there are some owners I want no part of. Period.

If you are really that good, get yourself the best position possible.

Daboll's obviously awesome but this is ridiculous.  How could it ever look like a "foolish decision" to keep your winning HC instead of firing him and promoting the OC?  Even if it were possible that would destroy the locker room irrevocably.

The Rams let Dick Vermeil walk after his SB win in favor of OC Mike Martz.  Many insiders thought they pushed him out in favor of Martz.

Martz  lost his SB opportunity to the spying/cheating Pats* but his teams never did have the same balance across defense and special teams that Vermeil’s teams did.

i guess there maybe about 5 HC spots in the league and the top 5 media candidates will probably be:

1. KC Chiefs OC Eric Bieniemy

2. Michigan HC: John Harbaugh

3. Oklahoma HC: Lincoln Reilly

4. 49ers DC: Robert Saleh

5. Ravens OC: Greg Roman

I just hope daboll stays with Allen as long as possible at this point.

Roman is not going to get a HC job...his offense is great running the ball but remedial passing. Jackson can't throw outside the numbers. That's a problem that causes them issues against good teams.

I think Roman has done a decent job in the passing game with most teams he’s been with. The 49ers had crappy Kaepernick and they still reached the Super Bowl with his play calling. The bills had gritty, though crappy Tyrod Taylor who is still till this day afraid to throw over the middle, and now he has Lamar Jackson who can’t really throw to the sidelines like you’ve mentioned. He designed the offense in which a limited passer got awarded the MVP. Plus, the ravens current receivers are pretty average. Hollywood brown only has speed, willie Snead doesn’t scare anyone, and mark andrews is not even close to being on Kelces or Kittles level, so in other words, he doesn’t have a big impact on the game.

many teams would love to have his running schemes help a rookie QB get settled in, including the Jets or Jags.

Idk if he has the leadership skills required to run a team tho. To me, he always seemed a bit too relaxed during interviews when he was here

So much for the objective coach-player relationship....wow.  That's some stuff there.

In case anyone wondered what kind of relationship Daboll and Josh have, that really laid it out.

For those who don't get a lot out of McDermott's interview, by the way, Daboll has become by far the most interesting and intriguing of the coaching interviews.  I would call it a "must watch"

Agreed. You can watch Sean for 3 days straight and learn nothing. You get stuff from Daboll - he is an interesting listen. Frazier is somewhere in the middle.

John Harbaugh already has an NFL job.

Not that this is even a possibility at this point, but I'd rather keep Daboll over McDermott if one has to go. I think in time, keeping the Clapmaster while letting Daboll walk will end up looking like a foolish decision.

not all coordinators make good head coaches. You would fire McDermott and keep Daboll?

I hear what you’re saying but becoming an NFL head coach is a unique scenario that is about more than money.  Meathead Mularkey (awful front office) and Saint Doug (big payout) aside, I can’t remember another situation in which a guy “opted out” of being a head coach.  What we truly don’t know is how Daboll feels about it.  I suspect that as much as he loves Buffalo and Josh Allen it is his dream to “run the show” himself and he will take that opportunity if it is presented — and it has nothing to do with money.

Yeah I am wondering the same.....as much as McClappy bothers me at times I realize he is the glue holding that whole team together.  Dabs?  We really don't know and it would be a HUGE bummer to find out otherwise.
